Overview
This one-day seminar aims to give all
personnel involved in the sourcing
and quality of textile products an
understanding of the basics of fabric
production and its relation to quality.
The course will also explain the
reasons for and processes of textile
testing.
The course provides an overview of
the different types of natural, man-
made and synthetic fibres in common
use, explain how they are made into
yarns and how they are manufactured
into woven, weft and warp knitted
fabrics. This seminar should provide
attendees with a good understanding
of how the different qualities of each
fibre and fabric combination play an
important part in the end use of the
product.
We will also go through the textile
testing terminology, explain how
tests are performed and how to
analyse and interpret the results.
The seminar will also provide a basic
overview of the legal obligations
of those in the supply chain and
methods to implement this, including
due diligence. The day includes a
tour of the softlines laboratory with
demonstrations of tests.

Frank Lowe
Frank Lowe graduated in 1971 from the
University of Bradford with an Honours
Degree in Textile Science. His current role in
Bureau Veritas is European Technical Services
Consultant. One of the major aspects of this
role involves explaining and interpreting
European Requirements and Directives
for the benefit of other parts of BV such as
laboratories in Asia and the USA. This role
also involves advising clients when they may
be struggling to establish what kind of testing
is required for their products. Frank has a
long history of Quality/Technical Management/
Research and Development in laboratories
and production companies for both Fabrics
and Plastics. Prior to joining Bureau Veritas
(AMTAC), he worked for 15 years in Raychem
Corporation. Whilst in Raychem, he worked
for, and eventually led, a research team that
won a Queens Award for Technology in 1993
relating to radiation cross – linked polymeric
materials for use in underground telephone
cables. Frank was awarded a Fellowship of the
Textile Institute in 1996 for his contributions to
Textile Research.
Katharine Elvin
Katharine Elvin is an independent consultant
specialising in all aspects of denim
development. Having worked in technical/
product development for suppliers, retail and
brands for over 20 years, she has a broad
experience and knowledge of the fashion
and textile industry. Since working for Levi
Strauss and Co in Europe, she has decided
to concentrate on what is widely considered
the fastest growing and evolving area of the
industry.
Frank Rankin
Frank is an independent textile professional,
currently working as a consultant for major
UK and European brands & retailers. Frank
has 35 years of experience in the textile
industry.
His specialist fields include the production
of the weft knitted jersey, lace, lingerie,
underwear and garment make up. Frank also
has specialist knowledge in all aspects of
dyeing, finishing and printing.
Malcolm Horner
Malcolm Horner, Toy Technical Consultant for
Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services,
has a wealth of experience of over 40 years in
the toy testing business. Malcolm, who is very-
well respected within the Toy Industry, sits
on the BSI Toy Safety Committee and is also
a member of the CEN Toy Safety Committee.
He is currently the chairman of the UK Toy
Notified Bodies Group.
Anika Schabram
Anika works as Consultant for cosmetic
products for Bureau Veritas in Schwerin,
Germany. Anika studied food chemistry and
then worked at the Lower Saxony State Office
for Consumer Protection and Food Safety
(LAVES) to receive her national certification.
This gave her an insight and understanding
of the way in which the review and
implementation of the various legal
requirements are implemented by the offices
of consumer protection.
At Bureau Veritas, she has specialised in the
field of cosmetics and is responsible for both
European test programs as well as for advice
on the requirements for cosmetic products,
from manufacturing to marketing.
David Croft
David Croft is Inspections, Audits &
Assessments Manager (EMEA) at Bureau
Veritas Consumer Products Services. David
has 15 years of expertise in Inspections and
Audits. He is working closely with major
brands, retailers and suppliers to help
them develop and improve their ethical and
quality assurance programmes. He has a
solid experience of working with the various
members of the supply chain, including NGOs.
