IV. COMPLETE TEACHING AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
- Research activity:
Since year 1985-up to the present: - The taxonomy of Albanian microscopic algae, mainly siliceous
(diatoms: Bacillariophyta), phytoplankton, the trophic state and the quality of natural waters.
Firstly focused on microscopic algae and ecology of coastal lagoons, and then in other
freshwater habitats (lakes, rivers, springs, etc.). More than 1200 diatom taxa were identified,
and most of them illustrated with microscopic photographs, including some poorly known ones.
More than ten species have been described as new to science. The whole collection of samples
and permanent slides is available beside the lab of Botany, FNS, UT. Moreover, monitoring of
water quality using diatoms and other microscopic algae continues in Albanian surface waters.
An integrate limnological study was carried on in Bovilla reservoir, the main drinking water
supplier for Tirana capital (Miho et al., 2009), based also into the application of the related EU
standards. The qualification and achievements comprise several research stays abroad, Gent
University (Belgium), Rostock, Jena and Frankfurt universities (Germany). The most important
was the research visit in the Institute of Botany, Frankfurt University, beside Prof. H. Lange-
Bertalot, during September 1999 - August 2000, supported by Alexander von Humboldt
foundation.
Has participated/cooperated in more than 25 projects dealing either with research in environmental life
issues or teaching in biological sciences, in more than 10 as project leader. More than 60
contributions were presented/published in national or international events (workshops,
seminars, conferences, etc.). Author/coauthor of about 20 textbooks, and other books and/or
monographs, and about 60 research papers, published either in Albanian and/or in English. Is
scientific advisor in 30 diploma or master theses and of 5 PhD theses, focused mainly in
Albanian microscopic algae, trophic state of natural waters and water quality, management of
aquatic ecosystems, etc.
- Teaching activity:
The teaching activity deals with the General Botany (lectures, lab and filed practices; 8 ECTS), FNS,
UT, continuously with the students of Biology (First year - Bachelor), and partly with the
students of Pharmacy (Second year), University of Medicine in Tirana.
Other teaching obligations: Environmental Biomonitoring in Master diploma of Environmental

10. yrs. 2005-06:-Member of the expert group focused on the ‘Reform of Research System in
Albania’, set up with the decision of Prime Minister. The principal task was to assess the actual
state of the research system, and based on the actual needs of the country and EU standards,
give recommendations to the Council of Ministers about the reforming possibilities to be carried on
in the research system in Albania.
11. yr. 2006: -Expert member of the first working subgroup on reforming the higher education after the
Bologna process. The main tasks performed were reforming the diploma system (application of
first and second diploma levels), accesses in the study levels, doctorate, ECTS system, diploma
supplement, teaching and research normative, standard of the curricula and academic structures.
