Adventure Narratives
• An adventure story is based on an event or series of events that happens outside
of the course of the protagonist’s ordinary life, usually accompanied by danger,
often by physical action.
• Adventure stories can encompass other story types, including escape, rescue,
thriller, romance and more. Perhaps more than any other genre, the adventure
embraces traditional plot elements, such as a journey, gaining symbolic artefacts
and defeating a quintessential villain in pursuit of a defined mission.
Adventure Movies that follow the general
structure.
The Main Elements.
• A Hero – usually the main character of the story.
• A Quest – In this part of the narrative, the protagonist is given a problem they
need to solve.
• An unfamiliar or dangerous environment.
• A Villain.
• The Risk.
• A Transformation.
Propp’s Characters
Propp suggested that in all of folklore and fairy tales, there were just 8 types of characters.
Every character fits into one of the following:
The Villain –
An evil character that creates
struggles for the hero.
The Dispatcher –
Any character who illustrates the
need for the hero’s quest and sends
the hero off. This often overlaps
with the princess’s father.
The Helper –
A typically magical entity
who comes to help the hero
on their quest.
The Princess or Prize –
The hero deserves her throughout the
story but is unable to marry her
because of some evil or injustice,
perhaps the work of the villain. The
hero’s journey is often ended when he
marries the princess, which
constitutes the villain's death /
defeat.
The Princess’s Father –
Is a key figure for the hero
to persuade, as the father
is almost always protective
of his daughter. The father
may also be in competition
in some way with the hero
for the princess’s
affections and a triangle
may form.
The Donor –
A character that prepares
the hero or gives the
hero some magical object,
sometimes after testing
them.
The Hero –
The character who reacts to
the dispatcher and donor
characters, thwarts the
villain, resolves any
lacking or wrong hoods and
weds the princess.
The false hero —
Figure who tries to take credit for
the hero's actions or tries to marry
the princess. They appear heroic but
they are not.
Todorov’s
Equilibrium
Breaks down stories in to five
simple steps.
Great for generating story ideas.
Helps you bring structure and
order to your narrative.
This is how humans have told
stories for thousands of years.
Dan Harmon’s
Story Circle
The Dan Harmon Story Circle is
a story structure divided into
eight distinct parts following a
protagonist's journey.
Also called "The Story Embryo" or
"Plot Embryo," these 8 steps follow
a character's pursuit of a goal
outside of their normal world.
Life Of Pi –
PG 12 Adventure/Drama
Life of Pi Plot:
After deciding to sell their zoo in India and move from there to Canada,
Santosh and Gita Patel board a freighter with a few remaining animals and
their sons. A terrible storm strikes the ship, leaving the Patel's'
teenage son (Pi) as the only human survivor.
However, Pi is not alone. His fight against the odds is heightened by the
company of a hyena and a male Bengal tiger who have both found refuge
aboard the lifeboat. As days turn into weeks and weeks drag into months,
Pi and the tiger must learn to trust each other if both are to survive the
difficult journey back to civilization.
Pi Patel's story can be viewed from two different perspectives.
He may be telling the truth about the animals being on the boat with him.
Or they may not be actually there, just a figment of his imagination.
A coping method, to distract him from what he has recently experienced.
Todorov’s Equilibrium in Life Of Pi
1. Living in India.
Has fallen in love
with a girl.
2. His parents tell
him their they are
all moving to Canada.
The ship sinks.
3. Manages to get onto a
lifeboat, with a Bengal
tiger and a hyena.
4. Struggles to
get to land, but
eventually does.
5. Has a wife and
kids, and tells the
world his story.
Hero’s Quest
Theory – Life Of Pi
The Ordinary World Living in India with his family, who own a zoo.
The Call to Adventure Moving to Canada on a freighter ship.
The Refusal Pi Patel wants to stay in India because of a girl he has recently fallen in love with.
Mentor Help His mother reassures him that everything is going to be okay.
Crossing the Threshold
A thunderstorm and many enormous waves sink the freighter ship. Escapes onto a
lifeboat.
Test/Allies/Enemies Hyena and male Bengal tiger.
Approach Building a raft to stay away from the dangerous / hungry animals.
Ordeal Scavenging for food and settling things with the tiger.
Reward Finally finding populated land.
Road Back Is saved, on the beach, by nearby locals.
Atonement Telling his story to the world.
Return Has a wife and kids in the end.
The hero's journey is a common narrative
archetype, or story template, that
involves a hero who goes on an
adventure, learns a lesson, wins a
victory with that newfound knowledge,
and then returns home transformed.
The classical version of the hero's
journey was known as an “epic,” often
written in poetic form, like
Homer’s Odyssey.
Today, the hero’s journey is applied in
different types of works, from fantasy
to historical fiction. Joseph’s
Campbell’s influential work, The Hero
With a Thousand Faces (1949), analyses
the concept of the hero’s journey, and
its various stages.
Pixar’s 22 Rules Of Storytelling
1. You admire a character for trying more than for their successes.
2. You got to keep in mind what’s interesting to you as an audience, not what’s fun to do as a
writer. They can be very different.
3. Trying for theme is important, but you won’t see what the story is actually about until
you’re at the end of it. Now rewrite.
4. Once upon a time there was ___. Every day, ___. One day ___. Because of that, ___. Because
of that, ___. Until finally ___.
5. Simplify. Focus. Combine characters. Hop over detours. You’ll feel like you’re losing
valuable stuff, but it sets you free.
6. What is your character good at, comfortable with? Throw the polar opposite at them.
Challenge them. How do they deal?
7. Come up with your ending before you figure out your middle. Seriously. Endings are hard, get
yours working up front.
8. Finish your story, let go even if it’s not perfect. In an ideal world you have both but move
on. Do better next time.
9. When you’re stuck, make a list of what WOULDN’T happen next. Lots of times the material to
get you unstuck will show up.
10. Pull apart the stories you like. What you like in them is a part of you; you’ve got to
recognize it before you can use it.
https://www.aerogrammestudio.com/2013/03/07/pixars-22-rules-of-storytelling/
11. Putting it on paper lets you start fixing it. If it stays in your head, a perfect idea, you’ll never share it with
anyone.
12. Discount the 1st thing that comes to mind. And the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th – get the obvious out of the
way. Surprise yourself.
13. Give your characters opinions. Passive/malleable might seem likable to you as you write, but it’s poison to the
audience.
14. Why must you tell THIS story? What’s the belief burning within you that your story feeds off of? That’s the heart
of it.
15. If you were your character, in this situation, how would you feel? Honesty lends credibility to unbelievable
situations.
16. What are the stakes? Give us reason to root for the character. What happens if they don’t succeed? Stack the odds
against.
17. No work is ever wasted. If it’s not working, let go and move on – it’ll come back around to be useful later.
18. You have to know yourself: the difference between doing your best & fussing. Story is testing, not refining.
19. Coincidences to get characters into trouble are great; coincidences to get them out of it are cheating.
20. Exercise: take the building blocks of a movie you dislike. How d’you rearrange them into what you DO like?
21. You gotta identify with your situation/characters, can’t just write ‘cool’. What would make YOU act that way?
22 . What’s the essence of your story? Most economical telling of it? If you know that, you can build out from there.
Production Elements
The production elements of film include Camera, Acting, Mise en Scene, Editing, Lighting, Sound. A good way to
remember this is C.A.M.E.L.S. The production elements of a film can often effect the way an audience feels or
thinks about the story because of the manipulation using a number of different production elements. For example
we know that creepy music means danger, we know that two people running towards each other in slow motion with
their arms outreached means that they’re in love, and we know that the character who is dressed in black, hidden
by shadows and holding a gun, is the villain. These are all manipulations to evoke the audiences emotions and
change their perceptions.
Camera – Camera / Film / Video techniques and technologies including shot selection, movement, focus etc.
Acting - An actor’s facial expressions, tone of voice, body language etc.
Mise En Scene - The arrangement of elements in front of the camera (everything in the shot).
Editing – Editing, sound design and mixing, including style, techniques, placement, pace and rhythm.
Lighting - Lighting, both naturalistic and expressive.
Sound - Sound, dialogue, music and sound effects.

study/production-elements/
Story Elements
The story elements of film include the Opening Sequence, Characters, Settings, The Plot, Time, Cause and Effect,
Point of View and the Closure. These elements are generally what can be manipulated by the production elements.
These evoke the emotions and perceptions of the audience. For example, in an opening sequence if the music is dark
as is the lighting we know it is going to be a film noir genre.
Opening Sequence – Is generally the first impression the audience has.
Character – The person(s) or animal(s) etc, in a story.
Setting – Where and when the story takes place.
Plot – The events that happen in the story.
Time – The structuring of time during the film.
Cause and Effect – The reason something happens and what happens as a result.
Point of View – The narrators position in relation to the story being told.
Closure – Generally the final impression the audience has.

Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom is
similar to my story because the hero has to
defeat a villain living in a temple on a
volcano. My story relates to this film
because they both have a volcano, a villain
and a temple.
This film is similar
to my story in the
fact that it is set in
a hidden mysterious
forest, with a
volcano, and a Aztec
temple sort of area.
It doesn’t really have
a villain though.
Unless a volcano, and
giant lizard counts.

This film is somewhat similar to my
story. The apes are powerful, and
they are fighting for what they think
is right. They also are fighting for
revenge on the humans.
My story is a lot like this
film, in the sense that
they both involve giant
mechs and a massive base
where they are all stored.
However, in Pacific Rim,
the mechs are controlled by
good people to destroy /
defeat evil.
In my story, the mechs are
controlled by bad people to
destroy / defeat all good
people who do not follow
the evil villain.

Research Summary
• What have you learned from your research?
I have learnt many different great guidelines that can be followed when thinking up
a story. I have also learned Production and Story Elements. I found it fascinating
learning about Todorov's Equilibrium, and Dan Harmon's Story Circle.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your own work?
I will reflect on Dan Harmon's Story Circle, Todorov's Equilibrium, The Production
and Story Elements, and The 22 Rules Of Storytelling. I may also read more into
Adventure Narratives.

Like this style of animating.
I’ll have to draw the characters
by hand first. Then I will be able
to digitalise them. Or I could use
a digital drawing pad.
I think that this font will suit well to
display the title of the movie because it
looks somewhat like a flame.

Idea 2
I chose this font because it made me think of snow
being blown of a mountain (on most letters). This is
key because the story is set in a tundra biome.
This font could also work because the letters
look like quite monstrous, which is what I want
the mechs to be conveyed like.
I think that Dave

the perfect villain
for the movie based
on my story.

Magazine and Advert Layouts
General Magazine
Designs What is Editorial Content in a magazine?
Editorial content in a magazine refers to all content that is written to
inform, educate, or entertain. Editorial content is the opposite of
commercial content or advertising copy, which is written to sell something.
General Movie Poster
Designs The humble movie poster is one of the oldest and most effective promotional
tools for movie studios.
Whether you’re looking to emulate your favorite movie poster design or learn
more about how to make a movie poster, consider this your ultimate guide to
the anatomy of movie poster design.
Magazine
Front Cover
I designed this front
cover for my own magazine:
SOUND.
This is going to be for
the main article of the
paper.
I looked at other magazine
front covers, especially
Mojo, and took a few ideas
from them.
Magazine
Inside
Pages
Here I designed the
main inside pages
for the SOUND
magazine. It is the
main article of the
paper, as it relates
to the front cover
(as shown to the
right).
Contingency
What can go wrong? What can you do if it does?
Camera stops working. Take a phone with plenty of storage.
Weather has changed for the worse. Plan for another day or location.
People suddenly unavailable. Always have backup cast members.
I have to isolate. Do everything I can, apart from filming.
If everything doesn't work out. Have a think about what to do and make a
simple but less exciting plan.
Footage corrupts. Try to produce it again or make a few
copies of the product.
Production / Editing takes longer than
expected.
Work on evaluation in free time /
sessions.
Risk Assessment
What could be a risk to you, others or
the equipment?
How can you make sure that doesn’t
happen? What will you do if it does?
Slippery floor – can fall over. Make sure to avoid all visible slippery
areas.
Trip over bags. Move bags well out of the way (of the
filming space).
Camera gets dropped. Or tripod falls
over with camera attached.
Make sure everything is secure at all
times.
Don't film near busy roads. Risk of getting hurt or killed.
Filming in a stairwell. Someone could fall and get hurt if they
have to run down a flight of stairs.
Running with the camera in hand. You could drop the camera, or trip and
damage it.
The camera gets stolen, cast is hurt. Avoid dark backstreets (as much as
possible).
Production
Using your plans, produce:
• A synopsis for your film
• A magazine front cover, promoting the film
• Additional advertising to promote the film
Proposal – Idea 1
Use this space for your synopsis. If you have produced different drafts or alternative
ideas, then include those here too. The more work the better. Show your working.
My film idea is very
similar to 'Journey 2:The
Mysterious Island'
because it involves an
Aztec area, a volcano,
and some sort of evil /
danger that needs to be
defeated.
It has the same setting
as my story, so I think
that this is the closest
movie to mine. However,
it is not animated, which
is how mine would be.
Synopsis – Idea 1
The hero has recently defeated a villain who was a small threat. He has been told by the dispatcher about the
next mission. His mission is to defeat a new villain who lives far away, he is destroying the ancient mythical
rainforest and killing innocent animals and people who live in the area. He heads to the donors home and talks
to him about the long, dangerous journey. The donor gives him an item to help him when he has to battle with
the villain. He takes his helpful items from other missions, his magical infinite storage bag, and his massive
mech, and he heads in the direction of the chaos. He travels through wetlands, deserts, grasslands, and
finally he makes it to the ancient mythical rainforest. Now he has to travel through it some of the way, to
get to the massive volcano and the forest fires. The villain is standing at the base of the volcano. He has
been patiently waiting for the hero to come and save the rainforest (whilst also trying to destroy it). The
hero is absolutely furious. He starts to power up his mech's special ability. It shoots a large energy ball
towards the threat. THE RED DORMAMMU GOBLIN effortlessly fires a large fire ball towards the hero. The two
spheres of immense power collide in the middle and explode creating a massive booming noise, stunning both of
them. The have an ultimate fight, using both of their best weapons and gadgets they slowly weaken each other
over the process of hours. Until finally, the hero maliciously takes down THE RED DORMAMMU GOBLIN. It starts
to rain down, putting out the fires and stopping it from spreading more. The hero goes around the rainforest
looking for any hurt or trapped animals / native people and helps them. He then makes his way back home,
through the rainforest, grasslands, deserts, and wetlands to receive his reward for the mission. He takes 2
weeks off to relax in his luxury mansion, then he is called to a new mission to fight off a three eyed, 30 ft
tall monster in the grasslands...

Synopsis – Idea 2
The film starts off in a very snowy part of Canada. The viewers can see a massive metal base,
with a bunch of large trucks parked out the front. The tall, buff business man can be seen
walking into the structure. The camera cuts to showing the inside of the base. There are
several large mechs in the form of various different animals, including an elephant, a snake,
a spider, a tiger, a monkey etc. The businessman asks about when they are ready to be
deployed. The get deployed 2 weeks later. The mechs have been programmed to kill anyone who is
not on the building sight. No-one in the world knew about these mechs, so they were not ready
to fight them off. Millions of people are killed within the first day. The larger mechs can
knock over large building and walk through the ocean. No-one is safe from these large mechs.
However, there are some ninjas in China, who have been training just in case something like
this ever happens. The have been granted with special powers from the gods, therefore they
wield enough power to take out some of the mechs. They need to get in contact with the US
government to create a plan with them, that they know will work to destroy all of the mechs.
They have to travel from China to USA to talk to the US government. This talk will take them a
rather long time, as they have to travel halfway across the world. The ninjas get to USA and
talk to the US government. They agree to a plan and defeat the mechs. They track them back to
where they came from and arrest all of the villains.

People start to find out that their money is disappearing. The police start to get
involved and start to track down the hackers. The hackers start to panic and decide
to hack less people so that there is less chance of getting caught. The police find
all of the hacker's names, and addresses. They keep this secret from the public.
They send officers to the different hackers houses to arrest them. The hackers have
no clue that the police are coming to arrest them. The hackers get arrested and are
sent to jail for life.

Reflection – 02/02/2022
• What have you done?
In the production phase of this project I have made my movie poster, however I may need to add some more to it, to make it better. I have taken a
few pictures from the internet, and pixilated them to make them look like they were digitally made. I created the smoke from the eruption from
blurring shapes. I made the meteor and the trail from creating shapes, adding effects to them, adding a gradient colour of red to orange to yellow
to show the heat, and then adding motion blur to make it look like it is moving at a high speed. I added the main character / actor to the of the
volcano (in the smoke), I also again added the cut out filter to the image to make it look more like it have been digitally made. I took images of
two different mechs, removed their background colours, and added a weapon to one of them. I am pretty far through the process of making the double
page spread. I need to finish that today.
• How did it go?
I found that making the movie poster was a pretty easy task, I just needed a little help. I learned a lot of stuff from Scott and Dave when I was
using Photoshop. When I started making the double page spread, I was unsure about how I wanted it to look so I looked online at existing products,
and picked one out that I could make mine similar to. It went well, and I am happy about how it is going.
• How could it be improved?
I still need to work on the double page spread, adding the title of the article to the page. I want to have it going around the outline of the
main actor of the film (Joshua Bassett). I have decided to put the text on the left hand side of the double page spread. I also need to add a
quote onto the page as well. I may also decide to move some parts of the text around.
• What are you going to do next?
On Monday I will make the magazine front cover, and make some things from the mock-up website. I need to add some more things to this PowerPoint,
and check through it all.
Video Game Review – Forza Horizon 5
Forza Horizon 5 is a 2021 racing video game developed by Playground Games and
published by Xbox Game Studios. The twelfth main instalment of the Forza series,
the game is set in a fictionalised representation of Mexico.
Throughout the game you can participate in races to each rewards such as credits,
XP, and cars. You can then upgrade the cars to earn more rewards, and in turn be
assigned with more races. You can also earn car points from doing stunts, these can
buy various different boosters to help you out in lots of situations.
You can tour the different areas of Mexico, in a range of
different types of vehicles.
Video Game Review -
Minecraft
Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by the Swedish video game developer
Mojang Studios.
The aim of the survival game mode is to collect materials to make better armor and
tools to defeat mobs. You can also collect XP from slaying mobs, which you can use
to give enchantments to you weapons and tools to make them more reliable and
stronger.
There is not really a specific aim for the creative game mode, apart from 'Be
Creative' and make whatever you would like to. I creative mode you can have as
many blocks as you want, but you cannot build above 256 blocks in the sky. This
rule applies to both game modes. You can change the settings in both of the game
modes to make it easier and more likable.
Some mobs in the game are trickier than others to defeat.
They may give you damaging effects or have stronger attacks.
Ways To Convert My Film Conception
Into A Video Game:
The hero would continuously move forwards, defeating villain after villain. Each getting
stronger and more powerful, along with the hero as he progresses. The hero can use gems and
coins, that he gets from defeating villains and bosses, to level himself, his weapons,
shields, abilities, and equipment up. This can make it easier in the future when he has to
battle trickier bosses. The user of the app can also watch adverts for prizes. In-game
purchases can also be made. The view of the character will be a Third Person Shot from the
right hand side. Each villain can be seen completely. There will be a background behind the
hero and the villain. It will be a volcano with grass at the base of it, and some large jungle
trees either side. The volcano is set far off in the distance. It is calmly erupting. There is
a small ash cloud above the volcano, there is also lava flowing down the sides and front of
the volcano. The villains level can be seen above it. The hero and the villains weapons can be
seen in each battle. The progress through each level can be seen at the top of the screen, in
a simple bar. There is only one character design, it will look as close to the character from
the movie as possible. The weapons, shield, extra equipment etc. will look as similar as
possible. The mech that the hero uses in the movie, will be an OP little robot that can join
the hero in battles. It will cost quite a lot of gems.

lot going for it. The combat system is complex and
engaging, with the protagonist being provided with a
respectable variety of weapons, abilities, and unique
attacks.
Flynn: Son of Crimson is a joy to play, look and listen
to. It’s difficulty is nicely paced (even if the bosses
can give us a good kicking), there’s more to explore
than meets the eye, and Studio Thunderhorse keep the
game moving brilliantly with new powers and abilities
dished out frequently. Whether you’re into these kind of
retro adventures or not, Flynn is well worth a look.

Dead Cells
Dead Cells, developed by Motion Twin, a diminutive French
game studio from Bordeaux, looks much like any other
action game of the recent past: chunky, handsome pixels
that riff on the 2D games of the mid-1990s, probably with the
intention of inspiring feelings of warmth and nostalgia in its
middle-aged players.
It features yet another whip-quick protagonist who, armed
with a sword and a bow, must scurry, leap and climb around
a sunset-draped island, shimmying up vines, tumbling
heroically through doors and grasping endless treasure that
makes him, piece by piece, incrementally better equipped to
face the game’s ever-escalating challenge.

KATANA
ZERO
Katana ZERO is a stylish neo-noir, action-platformer
featuring breakneck action and instant-death combat.
Slash, dash, and manipulate time to unravel your past
in a beautifully brutal acrobatic display.
Overcome your opposition however the situation
requires. Deflect gunfire back at foes, dodge
oncoming attacks, and manipulate enemies and
environments with traps and explosives. Leave no
survivors.
Each level is uniquely designed for countless methods
of completion. Defeat foes creatively, using
spontaneous approaches to eliminate your enemy as you
see fit.
An enigmatic story told through cinematic sequences
woven into the gameplay, twisting and folding to an
unexpected conclusion.

Blade Assault
Blade Assault is a rogue-lite game that features fast paced,
incredibly fluid combat & linear progression towards
defeating the corrupt ruler of sky city, Esperanza.
Soon after the discovery of a powerful new resource called
Red Stones, humanity quickly turned against each other to
seize it for themselves. War was inevitable, and it left most
of Earth to ruin. Victors of the war seized all the Red Stones
and created a sky city for themselves called Esperanza.
The rest of humanity were left to die in the corrupted
wastelands...

Experiments •-• Pixel Art
I would like the background to be
moving.
The clouds could be moving up high at
the top of the screen.
The branches and the leaves on the
trees could be swaying and rustling
gently in the wind.
It would be cool if the fire on The
Red Dormammu Goblin could look like
it is lively.
I would like the burst of electricity
from the small mech to look like it
is charged and striking forward.
I think that it would look cool if
the characters were slightly moving
back and forth, so that they are not
completely stationary the whole time.
Wooded Area
Volcano Area
I would like the ash cloud to be
moving and floating away.
I think that if we could make it look
like the lava is flowing down the
side of the volcano, that could
possibly look cool.

I think that it would look cool if

Photoshop Animation
Experiment
I made up this logo for my Movie and Video
Game company. I decided to make a simple
animation showing each letter / word off in a
sequence. I also added some extra decoration
in the corners of the screen.
The colours of my logo include red for the
word ACE, black for the letters NTERTAINMENT,
and white for any extra parts. I added an
exclamation mark at the end to finish it off.
I coloured the dot in red as extra detail.
I made the letters look FANCY because I think
that it makes it look a lot nicer. It also
suits the font that I originally used for the
logo.
Photoshop Animation
Experiment
I decided to make this setting for my video
game. It links in well with the setting from
the movie Volatile Villain. The flowers were
extra decoration; however, I don't think that
they will be added into the game.
I coloured the lava from the volcano
differently, to show the different
temperatures of the flow.
I coloured the grass in different shades, so
you know where to add the characters in.
I added detailed colouring to the trees to
show the detail that trees have IRL.
This setting was made on a small canvas. It
was 100 x 100 pixels. This made it difficult
at points to add in the detail that I wanted,
and to navigate where to draw things.
Planning: Game Summary
• My game is a 2D pixel game, where the hero is set up to fight multiple villains
and bosses.
• My game revolves around the idea from the movie Volatile Villain. The hero has
powers and special items that he can use to defeat villains and bosses in battle,
He can also have a small mech to help him along the way.
• The hero has to fight and defeat the different villains and bosses. He goes
through multiple rounds in the game. The hero has to fight and defeat 5 villains
to get to the boss fight at the end of each round. The player will get more or
less rewards, depending on how long they take to defeat the boss. You will get
more coins and gems for defeating a boss, than a villain. If the boss, or a
villain throughout the round defeats the hero, you go back a fight. You can
upgrade your hero, his equipment, and his mech to increase the chance of him
winning the battle. You can use the saved-up coins and gems for this.
Planning: Core Mechanics
• To fight the villains and bosses, the person playing the game has to tap the screen as fast as they can in
order to attack faster.
• The hero, his equipment, and his mech can all be upgraded using the coins and gems gained from defeating
villains and bosses.
• If the person playing the game does not defeat a villain or boss, they are sent back to the start of the
previous fight.
• There are five fights with villains, and then one boss fight at the end of each round.
• Some of the villains are the same in the next round. They are coloured different and are a higher level, so
therefore more difficult to defeat.
• Warnings can be given out to the player to let them know that they are not powerful enough for this fight.
• The player can go back to previous levels / rounds to defeat the villains and bosses again for fun. They
will also be rewarded for defeating these villains / bosses again, however the reward will decrease the
further they go back in levels / rounds.
• The page for choosing levels will be landscape. Each level will have a box with the according number in it.
The box showing the boss level will look different to the rest.
1 2 3 4 5 6
Planning: Story
• The hero fights villains and bosses from the movie. He also fights some villains
and bosses that are unnamed and not shown to the audience in the movie.
• In the movie it shows some of the other battles that the hero has won against
villains and bosses in different biomes / places on the planet Kepler-452b.
• There will be cut scenes from moments in the movie at times during gameplay
(before certain fights). This would be to show of the villain / boss, their
powers, and where they are fighting on the planet Kepler-452b.
• The story of the film is shown through the gameplay, by having the hero start
travelling from where he lives. He travels through the different biomes fighting
several villains and bosses throughout a few rounds. Then he moves onto a new
biome.

Layout Plans
• I would like there to be a meter at the top of the screen showing the player how far through the level they
are, and when to be prepared for the boss fight.
• I would like the screen view to be in scrolling view (from the left-hand side, zoomed out a bit).
• I would like some parts of the background to be moving whilst the characters are battling.
• I would like the characters to be slightly moving back and forth repetitively, at the same time. For
example: The hero is shifted forwards, the villain is shifted backwards and vice versa.
• I would like the characters in combat to have health meters above their heads, changing colours as they get
lower.
• I would also like there to be text portraying what level the character is.
• I would like there to be a menu button in the top right corner of the screen, so that the player can press
a button and go back to the level choosing page. They could also press a button to go to a page for
upgrading, and another button to go to the in-game shop.
• I would like there to be a few small see-through boxes at the side of the screen, centered on the right,
showing the hero's abilities and the time left on cooldown.
• The characters would be stood on flat track, usually in a different colour to the rest of the
background, so that it is easier to know where to add detail.
• I would like there to be a small box representing whether there is a Villain or a Boss next.

Simple
Tutorial
Level

Lv.

I think that the tutorial level needs to
have a simple but interesting setting, as
well as a less difficult villain/boss to
defeat because it brings the player into the
game knowing that they will have the upper
hand in the fights and that it has nicely
designed levels.
Advanced
Level
Lv
.2
0
Lv

I think that the advanced level needs to
have a more exciting setting with much more
detail added to it, as well as a
more difficult villain/boss to defeat
because now the player is pretty far through
the game, and they know what strategies to
use in certain scenarios.
Production
This is what the main menu looks
like for my game.
It gives you several choices for
where you would like to be taken
to.
Story, Controls, Upgrades, Exit.
It also shows you a setting for a
higher level. There are the
letters VV in the middle of the
level setting. This is to show
the player that this game is
based off the movie:
Volatile Villain.
The two V’s have also been given
some shadowing, and I added a
hint of orange to make it look
like there is lava running and
dripping down them.
Evaluation
Research
• When doing the research at the start of the project, I learned a lot of things about
how to write a story, and the descriptions of each character in general adventure
stories. I looked at Dan Harmon’s Story Circle, Todorov’s Equilibrium, Hero’s Quest
Theory, and Propp’s Characters.
• I then filled in tables for idea generation. For my first idea I wanted to have it set
on an Earth-like planet. I did some research on planets that have a similar climate to
Earth. I found one, its name is Kepler – 452b. It is 1,402 light years away (430
parsecs).
• I did research about each ideas settings and researched similar existing products to
write how they are similar to my idea, or how they inspired my thoughts.
Planning
• When planning, I made style sheets for each idea to plan out how the movie poster
would like, the font/s that I would use, the colours that I would use, I added in
some photos of some celebrities / actors / actresses who I would like to use and
some pictures that show key parts of the movies.
• I made some practice magazine pages, so that I would have a possible better idea
of how I wanted to make the final look like.
• I also filled in a table for the Contingency Plan, and the Risk Assessment on
things that could go wrong with people, equipment, weather, footage when
recording the movie or trailer.
Time Management
• Overall, I think that I managed time really well throughout the project.
• Writing on the slides about the Evaluation is a last-minute thing. I took a bit
longer than I wanted to on the Production part of the project. I took longer than
I wanted, to make and animate the level design for the game – some of the
progress didn’t save, so it took more time away from writing up the Evaluation.
• After using Pixilart.com and Photoshop to animate and add frames, I used Premier
Pro to add sound effects and music in the background. I used beepbox.co, which is
an online website, to create the sound effects and music for the game.
• I managed the time to spend on research and planning very well. I wrote a lot of
detailed slides to maximize marks. I have learned a lot of things in this
project. Mostly on Photoshop and Premier Pro, I can use these skills in my FMP.
Technical Qualities
• I used Pixilart.com to create some level settings and to design the characters. I made
the setting for the level, menu page, and level in the final production on Pixilart.
• Pixilart is somewhat trickier to use, compared to Photoshop which gives you a much
larger spectrum of possibilities. I made the moving assets, the rewards at the end of
the level, and the multi option board in Photoshop as it was much easier and quicker
to use. I added frames in Photoshop and made a short animation showing off a small
part of the game.
• I then exported this to Premier Pro so that I could add some sound effects and music
to the game. I made some music using the website Beepbox.co, the sound effect of
character jumping, and the sound of the hero’s gun being shot.
• I found Beepbox a fairly easy website to use to create sound effects and music. I
personally would have preferred to use a piece of software instead, like Mixcraft.
• The hero can jump in the game, he can also shoot energy balls out of his gun. You
cannot play as the villain / boss; however, you can redo battles / levels if wanted.
Aesthetic Qualities
• I think that the setting for the level is probably a bit basic, but it is just a small
unprofessional game. The characters also look pretty basic, because they aren’t made
expertly, and their limbs don’t move at all. However, I have shaded both of them, the
light is shown to be coming from the left.
• I have added shading to all of the buttons. The colour of the button and shadow is
changed if / when it is clicked. I have even added shadow and thought about the
lighting for the rewards that you get at the end of each level.
• After the villain has been shot by the hero’s energy ball the level is ended. The
words: LEVEL COMPLETE! show up on screen. It is presented in a 3D form to make it
stand out more and look better (top right).
Aural Qualities
• I decided to make my own music, for the project, on beepbox.co. I made a low
booming noise, and some different notes that I thought worked well together. It
made me think of the sort of thing that you would hear behind an old pixel game.
• I made a few sound effects of my own to use for certain actions and assets. I
made the sound that is used for when the hero’s gun fires the energy balls. I
also made a sound for when the villain is shot. There is a subtle sound that can
be heard when the hero jumps in the air, I made as well in beepbox.co.
• I took a few sound effects from the website Freesound.com. I needed an explosion
sound for when the powerful energy balls collide. I also needed a sound for when
the buttons are clicked. I think that the piece would definitely be worse if I
didn’t add in these sounds.
Audience Appeal
• I think that this game would be aimed at a younger audience. I think that boys,
aged 5 – 13 who are interested in generic combat games, would suit this
demographic because this is what the game is largely based on.
• This game could however be entertaining for everyone and anyone. I thought that
it would more likely be enjoyed by boys of these ages because they generally like
combat, villains, special equipment, and idle games.
• The game is based on the movie Volatile Villain, and involves the same story
plot, characters, settings, and equipment. The games animation is pretty low
quality, and the detail is also not highly advanced because it is just a small
simple game.
Overall Strengths & Weaknesses of the
final package.
Strengths Weaknesses
It works to show off a little
part of the game. A level, the
home screen, the level menu.
I could have made the villain
walk more realistically.
The buttons look like they are
being pressed down.
I could have made the explosion
and click sound effect myself.
I think that the music, I made,
fits in well with the game.
I could have added some more
detail to the level menu.
I think that the sound effects
are added in perfectly to the
final product.

Adventure Film Project

  • 2. Adventure Narratives • An adventure story is based on an event or series of events that happens outside of the course of the protagonist’s ordinary life, usually accompanied by danger, often by physical action. • Adventure stories can encompass other story types, including escape, rescue, thriller, romance and more. Perhaps more than any other genre, the adventure embraces traditional plot elements, such as a journey, gaining symbolic artefacts and defeating a quintessential villain in pursuit of a defined mission.
  • 3. Adventure Movies that follow the general structure.
  • 4. The Main Elements. • A Hero – usually the main character of the story. • A Quest – In this part of the narrative, the protagonist is given a problem they need to solve. • An unfamiliar or dangerous environment. • A Villain. • The Risk. • A Transformation.
  • 5. Propp’s Characters Propp suggested that in all of folklore and fairy tales, there were just 8 types of characters. Every character fits into one of the following: The Villain – An evil character that creates struggles for the hero. The Dispatcher – Any character who illustrates the need for the hero’s quest and sends the hero off. This often overlaps with the princess’s father. The Helper – A typically magical entity who comes to help the hero on their quest. The Princess or Prize – The hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of some evil or injustice, perhaps the work of the villain. The hero’s journey is often ended when he marries the princess, which constitutes the villain's death / defeat. The Princess’s Father – Is a key figure for the hero to persuade, as the father is almost always protective of his daughter. The father may also be in competition in some way with the hero for the princess’s affections and a triangle may form. The Donor – A character that prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object, sometimes after testing them. The Hero – The character who reacts to the dispatcher and donor characters, thwarts the villain, resolves any lacking or wrong hoods and weds the princess. The false hero — Figure who tries to take credit for the hero's actions or tries to marry the princess. They appear heroic but they are not.
  • 6. Todorov’s Equilibrium Breaks down stories in to five simple steps. Great for generating story ideas. Helps you bring structure and order to your narrative. This is how humans have told stories for thousands of years.
  • 7. Dan Harmon’s Story Circle The Dan Harmon Story Circle is a story structure divided into eight distinct parts following a protagonist's journey. Also called "The Story Embryo" or "Plot Embryo," these 8 steps follow a character's pursuit of a goal outside of their normal world.
  • 8. Life Of Pi – PG 12 Adventure/Drama Life of Pi Plot: After deciding to sell their zoo in India and move from there to Canada, Santosh and Gita Patel board a freighter with a few remaining animals and their sons. A terrible storm strikes the ship, leaving the Patel's' teenage son (Pi) as the only human survivor. However, Pi is not alone. His fight against the odds is heightened by the company of a hyena and a male Bengal tiger who have both found refuge aboard the lifeboat. As days turn into weeks and weeks drag into months, Pi and the tiger must learn to trust each other if both are to survive the difficult journey back to civilization. Pi Patel's story can be viewed from two different perspectives. He may be telling the truth about the animals being on the boat with him. Or they may not be actually there, just a figment of his imagination. A coping method, to distract him from what he has recently experienced.
  • 9. Todorov’s Equilibrium in Life Of Pi 1. Living in India. Has fallen in love with a girl. 2. His parents tell him their they are all moving to Canada. The ship sinks. 3. Manages to get onto a lifeboat, with a Bengal tiger and a hyena. 4. Struggles to get to land, but eventually does. 5. Has a wife and kids, and tells the world his story.
  • 10. Hero’s Quest Theory – Life Of Pi The Ordinary World Living in India with his family, who own a zoo. The Call to Adventure Moving to Canada on a freighter ship. The Refusal Pi Patel wants to stay in India because of a girl he has recently fallen in love with. Mentor Help His mother reassures him that everything is going to be okay. Crossing the Threshold A thunderstorm and many enormous waves sink the freighter ship. Escapes onto a lifeboat. The hero's journey is a common narrative archetype, or story template, that involves a hero who goes on an adventure, learns a lesson, wins a victory with that newfound knowledge, and then returns home transformed. The classical version of the hero's journey was known as an “epic,” often written in poetic form, like Homer’s Odyssey. Today, the hero’s journey is applied in different types of works, from fantasy to historical fiction. Joseph’s Campbell’s influential work, The Hero With a Thousand Faces (1949), analyses the concept of the hero’s journey, and its various stages.
  • 11. Pixar’s 22 Rules Of Storytelling 1. You admire a character for trying more than for their successes. 2. You got to keep in mind what’s interesting to you as an audience, not what’s fun to do as a writer. They can be very different. 3. Trying for theme is important, but you won’t see what the story is actually about until you’re at the end of it. Now rewrite. 4. Once upon a time there was ___. Every day, ___. One day ___. Because of that, ___. Because of that, ___. Until finally ___. 5. Simplify. Focus. Combine characters. Hop over detours. You’ll feel like you’re losing valuable stuff, but it sets you free. 6. What is your character good at, comfortable with? Throw the polar opposite at them. Challenge them. How do they deal? 7. Come up with your ending before you figure out your middle. Seriously. Endings are hard, get yours working up front. 8. Finish your story, let go even if it’s not perfect. In an ideal world you have both but move on. Do better next time. 9. When you’re stuck, make a list of what WOULDN’T happen next. Lots of times the material to get you unstuck will show up. 10. Pull apart the stories you like. What you like in them is a part of you; you’ve got to recognize it before you can use it. https://www.aerogrammestudio.com/2013/03/07/pixars-22-rules-of-storytelling/ 11. Putting it on paper lets you start fixing it. If it stays in your head, a perfect idea, you’ll never share it with anyone. 12. Discount the 1st thing that comes to mind. And the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th – get the obvious out of the way. Surprise yourself. 13. Give your characters opinions. Passive/malleable might seem likable to you as you write, but it’s poison to the audience. 14. Why must you tell THIS story? What’s the belief burning within you that your story feeds off of? That’s the heart of it. 15. If you were your character, in this situation, how would you feel? Honesty lends credibility to unbelievable situations. 16. What are the stakes? Give us reason to root for the character. What happens if they don’t succeed? Stack the odds against.
  • 12. Production Elements The production elements of film include Camera, Acting, Mise en Scene, Editing, Lighting, Sound. A good way to remember this is C.A.M.E.L.S. The production elements of a film can often effect the way an audience feels or thinks about the story because of the manipulation using a number of different production elements. For example we know that creepy music means danger, we know that two people running towards each other in slow motion with their arms outreached means that they’re in love, and we know that the character who is dressed in black, hidden by shadows and holding a gun, is the villain. These are all manipulations to evoke the audiences emotions and change their perceptions. Sound - Sound, dialogue, music and sound effects. https://filmasatext.wordpress.com/students/technical-aspects-of-film- study/production-elements/
  • 13. Story Elements The story elements of film include the Opening Sequence, Characters, Settings, The Plot, Time, Cause and Effect, Point of View and the Closure. These elements are generally what can be manipulated by the production elements. These evoke the emotions and perceptions of the audience. For example, in an opening sequence if the music is dark as is the lighting we know it is going to be a film noir genre. Closure – Generally the final impression the audience has. https://filmasatext.wordpress.com/students/technical-aspects-of-film- study/production-elements/
  • 14. Generating Ideas 1 Idea 1 – Volatile Villain Who • The donor – Gives each hero a magical token of appreciation, for they have offered to help them out by protecting the furtive mythical ancient rainforest again. • The helper – A holographic wise elder who pops up at random points during their missions, to give them tips on what the best next move may be. He also let’s them know if there is any danger up ahead. • The prize – The extremely powerful ornament that the villain is using to cause havoc to the ancient rainforest area. • The heroes – Helping to protect the land once again with their special high class machines. • The villain – Using the extremely powerful ornament in anger / retaliation towards the heroes who have stopped him many times before. What • Heroes living ‘the life’ before they need to save the rainforest again. • They have robotic machines that they can use to defeat all evil. • They travel through the mythical ancient rainforest to get to the volcano, where all of the havoc is taking place. • Advanced human-like civilization. Why • To stop the evil villain who is terrorising the ancient rainforest area. • He is threatening to burn down the rainforest. When • In the present, very far away. Where • Volcano base. • Ancient Rainforest. • Inter-galactic planet. • Kepler - 452b • 1,402 light years (430 parsecs) away. How • A long journey. • Many miles. • Easier with their special high class machines. • Advanced human-like civilization. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kepler-452b
  • 15. Similar Existing Products Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom is similar to my story because the hero has to defeat a villain living in a temple on a volcano. My story relates to this film because they both have a volcano, a villain and a temple. This film is similar to my story in the fact that it is set in a hidden mysterious forest, with a volcano, and a Aztec temple sort of area. It doesn’t really have a villain though. Unless a volcano, and giant lizard counts.
  • 17. Generating Ideas 2 Idea 2 – Mech Madness Who • Evil Villain – Powerful Businessman, crazy. • Team of Heroes - Honest, brave, warriors. • Villains staff / workers. • Programmed Mechs. • Heroes – Chinese Expert Ninjas, Power from the gods, extremely knowledgeable. What • Building large mechs programmed by villain. • To take over the world. • Some of them crush people, some of them chomp on them, and some of them pick them up and throw them hundreds of metres into the air and just let them fall. • They knock over buildings. • Advanced technology can teleport them to different countries. • They can survive in any climate / temperature. • Special super powers from rare earth chemicals. Why • To become all powerful. • To take over the world. • They think that they are the best people on Earth. • The people who work for him are brain washed into thinking that he is correct in everything that he says. When • February 9th, 2040 Where • Tundra Biome. • Canada. • Giant metal base. How • The mech robots have been programmed to destroy any people in sight, apart from the workers in the base and the villain. • They are large mechs that take on the shape of a few powerful / dangerous animals. For example; A snake, A spider, or A Tiger. • Some of them crush people, some of them chomp on them, and some of them pick them up and throw them hundreds of metres into the air and just let them fall. • They are distressingly gruesome.
  • 18. Similar Existing Products This film is somewhat similar to my story. The apes are powerful, and they are fighting for what they think is right. They also are fighting for revenge on the humans. My story is a lot like this film, in the sense that they both involve giant mechs and a massive base where they are all stored. However, in Pacific Rim, the mechs are controlled by good people to destroy / defeat evil. In my story, the mechs are controlled by bad people to destroy / defeat all good people who do not follow the evil villain.
  • 19.
  • 20. Generating Ideas 3 Idea 3 – Encryption Who • Anonymous men living in the middle of nowhere, in foreign countries. • Police / Detectives – American. • Hackers - Finland, Australia, Greece, France. • Victims – From all over the world. What • Hacking people's devices. Phones, computers, tablets. • The journey to track down, and stealthily find the hackers. • They find out where these hackers live. They thought that it was one at first, then, later on, found out that there were in fact four hackers all working together. They keep quiet on social media about what their plans are. Why • To gain money, peoples card information. When • Present time. Where • Police / Detectives – America. • Hackers - Finland, Australia, Greece, France. • Victims - All over the world. How • Controlling people's devices. • Hacking into their devices. https://hackernoon.com/what-is-hacking-common-objectives-types-and-how-to-guard- against-it-ab99897ff00b
  • 21. Similar Existing Products My story is also similar to this film, because it is to do with someone hacking. In this film, the hacker is releasing US government files to the public. My story is a lot like both films. More so like this one, because it is about transferring and taking money from anywhere and anyone. The hacker can mess with phone calls, email systems , and air traffic controls.
  • 23. Research Summary • What have you learned from your research? I have learnt many different great guidelines that can be followed when thinking up a story. I have also learned Production and Story Elements. I found it fascinating learning about Todorov's Equilibrium, and Dan Harmon's Story Circle. • What aspects of the research will you include within your own work? I will reflect on Dan Harmon's Story Circle, Todorov's Equilibrium, The Production and Story Elements, and The 22 Rules Of Storytelling. I may also read more into Adventure Narratives.
  • 24. Bibliography 1. Journey 2 The Mysterious Island (2012) Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, Walden Media. 2. Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom (1984) Lucasfilm, Paramount Pictures Studios. 3. Pacific Rim Uprising (2013) Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros. 4. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) Chernin Entertainment TSG Entertainment, 20th Century Fox. 5. Takedown (2000) Millennium Films. 6. The Fifth Estate (2013) DreamWorks Pictures, Reliance Entertainment, Touchstone Pictures, Anonymous Content, Participant.
  • 25. Style Sheet Idea 1 Jungle Colour Scheme Volcano Colour Scheme Like this style of animating. I’ll have to draw the characters by hand first. Then I will be able to digitalise them. Or I could use a digital drawing pad. I think that this font will suit well to display the title of the movie because it looks somewhat like a flame. Volatile Villain
  • 26. Style Sheet Idea 2 I chose this font because it made me think of snow being blown of a mountain (on most letters). This is key because the story is set in a tundra biome. This font could also work because the letters look like quite monstrous, which is what I want the mechs to be conveyed like. I think that Dave Bautista would be the perfect villain for the movie based on my story.
  • 27. Style Sheet Idea 3 Encryption I think that this font suits well for the title of my movie. It is made up of mobile phones. I chose the name because it suits the type of hacking, and because it sounds like an amazing movie name. dafont.com
  • 29. General Magazine Designs What is Editorial Content in a magazine? Editorial content in a magazine refers to all content that is written to inform, educate, or entertain. Editorial content is the opposite of commercial content or advertising copy, which is written to sell something.
  • 30. General Movie Poster Designs The humble movie poster is one of the oldest and most effective promotional tools for movie studios. Whether you’re looking to emulate your favorite movie poster design or learn more about how to make a movie poster, consider this your ultimate guide to the anatomy of movie poster design.
  • 31. Magazine Front Cover I designed this front cover for my own magazine: SOUND. This is going to be for the main article of the paper. I looked at other magazine front covers, especially Mojo, and took a few ideas from them.
  • 32. Magazine Inside Pages Here I designed the main inside pages for the SOUND magazine. It is the main article of the paper, as it relates to the front cover (as shown to the right).
  • 33. Contingency What can go wrong? What can you do if it does? Camera stops working. Take a phone with plenty of storage. Weather has changed for the worse. Plan for another day or location. People suddenly unavailable. Always have backup cast members. I have to isolate. Do everything I can, apart from filming. If everything doesn't work out. Have a think about what to do and make a simple but less exciting plan. Footage corrupts. Try to produce it again or make a few copies of the product. Production / Editing takes longer than expected. Work on evaluation in free time / sessions.
  • 34. Risk Assessment What could be a risk to you, others or the equipment? How can you make sure that doesn’t happen? What will you do if it does? Slippery floor – can fall over. Make sure to avoid all visible slippery areas. Trip over bags. Move bags well out of the way (of the filming space). Camera gets dropped. Or tripod falls over with camera attached. Make sure everything is secure at all times. Don't film near busy roads. Risk of getting hurt or killed. Filming in a stairwell. Someone could fall and get hurt if they have to run down a flight of stairs. Running with the camera in hand. You could drop the camera, or trip and damage it. The camera gets stolen, cast is hurt. Avoid dark backstreets (as much as possible).
  • 36. Using your plans, produce: • A synopsis for your film • A magazine front cover, promoting the film • Additional advertising to promote the film
  • 37. Proposal – Idea 1 Use this space for your synopsis. If you have produced different drafts or alternative ideas, then include those here too. The more work the better. Show your working. My film idea is very similar to 'Journey 2:The Mysterious Island' because it involves an Aztec area, a volcano, and some sort of evil / danger that needs to be defeated. It has the same setting as my story, so I think that this is the closest movie to mine. However, it is not animated, which is how mine would be.
  • 38. Synopsis – Idea 1 The hero has recently defeated a villain who was a small threat. He has been told by the dispatcher about the next mission. His mission is to defeat a new villain who lives far away, he is destroying the ancient mythical rainforest and killing innocent animals and people who live in the area. He heads to the donors home and talks to him about the long, dangerous journey. The donor gives him an item to help him when he has to battle with the villain. He takes his helpful items from other missions, his magical infinite storage bag, and his massive mech, and he heads in the direction of the chaos. He travels through wetlands, deserts, grasslands, and finally he makes it to the ancient mythical rainforest. • 45. Reflection – 02/02/2022 • What have you done? In the production phase of this project I have made my movie poster, however I may need to add some more to it, to make it better. I have taken a few pictures from the internet, and pixilated them to make them look like they were digitally made. I created the smoke from the eruption from blurring shapes. I made the meteor and the trail from creating shapes, adding effects to them, adding a gradient colour of red to orange to yellow to show the heat, and then adding motion blur to make it look like it is moving at a high speed. I added the main character / actor to the of the volcano (in the smoke), I also again added the cut out filter to the image to make it look more like it have been digitally made. I took images of two different mechs, removed their background colours, and added a weapon to one of them. I am pretty far through the process of making the double page spread. I need to finish that today. • How did it go? I found that making the movie poster was a pretty easy task, I just needed a little help. I learned a lot of stuff from Scott and Dave when I was using Photoshop. When I started making the double page spread, I was unsure about how I wanted it to look so I looked online at existing products, and picked one out that I could make mine similar to. It went well, and I am happy about how it is going. • How could it be improved? I still need to work on the double page spread, adding the title of the article to the page. I want to have it going around the outline of the main actor of the film (Joshua Bassett). I have decided to put the text on the left hand side of the double page spread. I also need to add a quote onto the page as well. I may also decide to move some parts of the text around. • What are you going to do next? On Monday I will make the magazine front cover, and make some things from the mock-up website. I need to add some more things to this PowerPoint, and check through it all.

  • 47. Video Game Review - Minecraft Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by the Swedish video game developer Mojang Studios. The aim of the survival game mode is to collect materials to make better armor and tools to defeat mobs. You can also collect XP from slaying mobs, which you can use to give enchantments to you weapons and tools to make them more reliable and stronger. There is not really a specific aim for the creative game mode, apart from 'Be Creative' and make whatever you would like to. I creative mode you can have as many blocks as you want, but you cannot build above 256 blocks in the sky. This rule applies to both game modes. You can change the settings in both of the game modes to make it easier and more likable. Some mobs in the game are trickier than others to defeat. They may give you damaging effects or have stronger attacks.
  • 48. Ways To Convert My Film Conception Into A Video Game: The hero would continuously move forwards, defeating villain after villain. Each getting stronger and more powerful, along with the hero as he progresses. The hero can use gems and coins, that he gets from defeating villains and bosses, to level himself, his weapons, shields, abilities, and equipment up. This can make it easier in the future when he has to battle trickier bosses. The user of the app can also watch adverts for prizes. In-game purchases can also be made. The view of the character will be a Third Person Shot from the right hand side. Each villain can be seen completely. There will be a background behind the hero and the villain. It will be a volcano with grass at the base of it, and some large jungle trees either side. The volcano is set far off in the distance. It is calmly erupting. There is a small ash cloud above the volcano, there is also lava flowing down the sides and front of the volcano. The villains level can be seen above it. The hero and the villains weapons can be seen in each battle. The progress through each level can be seen at the top of the screen, in a simple bar. There is only one character design, it will look as close to the character from the movie as possible. The weapons, shield, extra equipment etc. will look as similar as possible. The mech that the hero uses in the movie, will be an OP little robot that can join the hero in battles. It will cost quite a lot of gems. Action / Adventure Game

It features yet another whip-quick protagonist who, armed with a sword and a bow, must scurry, leap and climb around a sunset-draped island, shimmying up vines, tumbling heroically through doors and grasping endless treasure that makes him, piece by piece, incrementally better equipped to face the game’s ever-escalating challenge. https://www.theguardian.com/games/2018/sep/01/dead-cells-review-motion-twin

  • 56. I would like the background to be moving. The clouds could be moving up high at the top of the screen. The branches and the leaves on the trees could be swaying and rustling gently in the wind. It would be cool if the fire on The Red Dormammu Goblin could look like it is lively. I would like the burst of electricity from the small mech to look like it is charged and striking forward. I think that it would look cool if the characters were slightly moving back and forth, so that they are not completely stationary the whole time. Wooded Area
  • 57. Volcano Area I would like the ash cloud to be moving and floating away. • 58. Photoshop Animation Experiment I made up this logo for my Movie and Video Game company. I decided to make a simple animation showing each letter / word off in a sequence. I also added some extra decoration in the corners of the screen. The colours of my logo include red for the word ACE, black for the letters NTERTAINMENT, and white for any extra parts. I added an exclamation mark at the end to finish it off. I coloured the dot in red as extra detail. I made the letters look FANCY because I think that it makes it look a lot nicer. It also suits the font that I originally used for the logo.
  • 59. Photoshop Animation Experiment I decided to make this setting for my video game. It links in well with the setting from the movie Volatile Villain. The flowers were extra decoration; however, I don't think that they will be added into the game. I coloured the lava from the volcano differently, to show the different temperatures of the flow. I coloured the grass in different shades, so you know where to add the characters in. I added detailed colouring to the trees to show the detail that trees have IRL. This setting was made on a small canvas. It was 100 x 100 pixels. This made it difficult at points to add in the detail that I wanted, and to navigate where to draw things.
  • 60. Planning: Game Summary • My game is a 2D pixel game, where the hero is set up to fight multiple villains and bosses. • My game revolves around the idea from the movie Volatile Villain. The hero has powers and special items that he can use to defeat villains and bosses in battle, He can also have a small mech to help him along the way. • The hero has to fight and defeat the different villains and bosses. He goes through multiple rounds in the game. The hero has to fight and defeat 5 villains to get to the boss fight at the end of each round. The player will get more or less rewards, depending on how long they take to defeat the boss. You will get more coins and gems for defeating a boss, than a villain. If the boss, or a villain throughout the round defeats the hero, you go back a fight. You can upgrade your hero, his equipment, and his mech to increase the chance of him winning the battle. You can use the saved-up coins and gems for this.
  • 61. Planning: Core Mechanics • To fight the villains and bosses, the person playing the game has to tap the screen as fast as they can in order to attack faster. • The hero, his equipment, and his mech can all be upgraded using the coins and gems gained from defeating villains and bosses. • If the person playing the game does not defeat a villain or boss, they are sent back to the start of the previous fight. • There are five fights with villains, and then one boss fight at the end of each round. • Some of the villains are the same in the next round. They are coloured different and are a higher level, so therefore more difficult to defeat. • Warnings can be given out to the player to let them know that they are not powerful enough for this fight. • The player can go back to previous levels / rounds to defeat the villains and bosses again for fun. They will also be rewarded for defeating these villains / bosses again, however the reward will decrease the further they go back in levels / rounds. • The page for choosing levels will be landscape. Each level will have a box with the according number in it. The box showing the boss level will look different to the rest. 1 2 3 4 5 6
  • 62. Planning: Story • The hero fights villains and bosses from the movie. He also fights some villains and bosses that are unnamed and not shown to the audience in the movie. • In the movie it shows some of the other battles that the hero has won against villains and bosses in different biomes / places on the planet Kepler-452b. • There will be cut scenes from moments in the movie at times during gameplay (before certain fights). This would be to show of the villain / boss, their powers, and where they are fighting on the planet Kepler-452b. • The story of the film is shown through the gameplay, by having the hero start travelling from where he lives. He travels through the different biomes fighting several villains and bosses throughout a few rounds. Then he moves onto a new biome.

  • 66. Planning: Layout Plans • I would like there to be a meter at the top of the screen showing the player how far through the level they are, and when to be prepared for the boss fight. • I would like the screen view to be in scrolling view (from the left-hand side, zoomed out a bit). • I would like some parts of the background to be moving whilst the characters are battling. • I would like the characters to be slightly moving back and forth repetitively, at the same time. For example: The hero is shifted forwards, the villain is shifted backwards and vice versa. • I would like the characters in combat to have health meters above their heads, changing colours as they get lower. • I would also like there to be text portraying what level the character is. • I would like there to be a menu button in the top right corner of the screen, so that the player can press a button and go back to the level choosing page. They could also press a button to go to a page for upgrading, and another button to go to the in-game shop. • I would like there to be a few small see-through boxes at the side of the screen, centered on the right, showing the hero's abilities and the time left on cooldown. • The characters would be stood on flat track, usually in a different colour to the rest of the background, so that it is easier to know where to add detail. • I would like there to be a small box representing whether there is a Villain or a Boss next. If it is not lower, the player will be told that they will not be able to defeat this villain/boss. In order to defeat the villain/boss, they would need to watch a video or go back and defeat a villain/boss (from a previous level) in a faster time, to get more coins or gems. From there they can upgrade their hero, and his equipment. Coin Gemstone
  • 68. Planning: Level Design Simple Tutorial Level Lv. 1 Lv. 1 I think that the tutorial level needs to have a simple but interesting setting, as well as a less difficult villain/boss to defeat because it brings the player into the game knowing that they will have the upper hand in the fights and that it has nicely designed levels. Advanced Level Lv .2 0 Lv .1 8 I think that the advanced level needs to have a more exciting setting with much more detail added to it, as well as a more difficult villain/boss to defeat because now the player is pretty far through the game, and they know what strategies to use in certain scenarios.
  • 69. Production This is what the main menu looks like for my game. It gives you several choices for where you would like to be taken to. Story, Controls, Upgrades, Exit. It also shows you a setting for a higher level. There are the letters VV in the middle of the level setting. This is to show the player that this game is based off the movie: Volatile Villain. The two V’s have also been given some shadowing, and I added a hint of orange to make it look like there is lava running and dripping down them.
  • 71. Research • When doing the research at the start of the project, I learned a lot of things about how to write a story, and the descriptions of each character in general adventure stories. I looked at Dan Harmon’s Story Circle, Todorov’s Equilibrium, Hero’s Quest Theory, and Propp’s Characters. • I then filled in tables for idea generation. For my first idea I wanted to have it set on an Earth-like planet. I did some research on planets that have a similar climate to Earth. I found one, its name is Kepler – 452b. It is 1,402 light years away (430 parsecs). • I did research about each ideas settings and researched similar existing products to write how they are similar to my idea, or how they inspired my thoughts.
  • 72. Planning • When planning, I made style sheets for each idea to plan out how the movie poster would like, the font/s that I would use, the colours that I would use, I added in some photos of some celebrities / actors / actresses who I would like to use and some pictures that show key parts of the movies. • I made some practice magazine pages, so that I would have a possible better idea of how I wanted to make the final look like. • I also filled in a table for the Contingency Plan, and the Risk Assessment on things that could go wrong with people, equipment, weather, footage when recording the movie or trailer.
  • 73. Time Management • Overall, I think that I managed time really well throughout the project. • Writing on the slides about the Evaluation is a last-minute thing. I took a bit longer than I wanted to on the Production part of the project. I took longer than I wanted, to make and animate the level design for the game – some of the progress didn’t save, so it took more time away from writing up the Evaluation. • After using Pixilart.com and Photoshop to animate and add frames, I used Premier Pro to add sound effects and music in the background. I used beepbox.co, which is an online website, to create the sound effects and music for the game. • I managed the time to spend on research and planning very well. I wrote a lot of detailed slides to maximize marks. I have learned a lot of things in this project. Mostly on Photoshop and Premier Pro, I can use these skills in my FMP.
  • 74. Technical Qualities • I used Pixilart.com to create some level settings and to design the characters. I made the setting for the level, menu page, and level in the final production on Pixilart. • Pixilart is somewhat trickier to use, compared to Photoshop which gives you a much larger spectrum of possibilities. I made the moving assets, the rewards at the end of the level, and the multi option board in Photoshop as it was much easier and quicker to use. I added frames in Photoshop and made a short animation showing off a small part of the game. • I then exported this to Premier Pro so that I could add some sound effects and music to the game. I made some music using the website Beepbox.co, the sound effect of character jumping, and the sound of the hero’s gun being shot. • I found Beepbox a fairly easy website to use to create sound effects and music. I personally would have preferred to use a piece of software instead, like Mixcraft. • The hero can jump in the game, he can also shoot energy balls out of his gun. You cannot play as the villain / boss; however, you can redo battles / levels if wanted.
  • 75. Aesthetic Qualities • I think that the setting for the level is probably a bit basic, but it is just a small unprofessional game. The characters also look pretty basic, because they aren’t made expertly, and their limbs don’t move at all. However, I have shaded both of them, the light is shown to be coming from the left. • I have added shading to all of the buttons. The colour of the button and shadow is changed if / when it is clicked. I have even added shadow and thought about the lighting for the rewards that you get at the end of each level. • After the villain has been shot by the hero’s energy ball the level is ended. The words: LEVEL COMPLETE! show up on screen. It is presented in a 3D form to make it stand out more and look better (top right).
  • 76. Aural Qualities • I decided to make my own music, for the project, on beepbox.co. I made a low booming noise, and some different notes that I thought worked well together. It made me think of the sort of thing that you would hear behind an old pixel game. • I made a few sound effects of my own to use for certain actions and assets. I made the sound that is used for when the hero’s gun fires the energy balls. I also made a sound for when the villain is shot. There is a subtle sound that can be heard when the hero jumps in the air, I made as well in beepbox.co. • I took a few sound effects from the website Freesound.com. I needed an explosion sound for when the powerful energy balls collide. I also needed a sound for when the buttons are clicked. I think that the piece would definitely be worse if I didn’t add in these sounds.
  • 77. Audience Appeal • I think that this game would be aimed at a younger audience. I think that boys, aged 5 – 13 who are interested in generic combat games, would suit this demographic because this is what the game is largely based on. • This game could however be entertaining for everyone and anyone. I thought that it would more likely be enjoyed by boys of these ages because they generally like combat, villains, special equipment, and idle games. • The game is based on the movie Volatile Villain, and involves the same story plot, characters, settings, and equipment. The games animation is pretty low quality, and the detail is also not highly advanced because it is just a small simple game.
  • 78. Overall Strengths & Weaknesses of the final package. Strengths Weaknesses It works to show off a little part of the game. A level, the home screen, the level menu. I could have made the villain walk more realistically. The buttons look like they are being pressed down. I could have made the explosion and click sound effect myself. I think that the music, I made, fits in well with the game. I could have added some more detail to the level menu. I think that the sound effects are added in perfectly to the final product.
