2. HISTORY
The SME Bank was formed and incorporated as a public limited company under the
Companies Ordinance 1984.The Government of Pakistan is the major shareholder of the
bank. As part offinanclal sector restructuring program of
Government of Pakistan, Regional Development Finance Corporation (RDFC) and small
Business Finance Corporation (SBFC) were amalgamated into SME Bank Ltd effective
January 1, 2002.SME bank Ltd was established to exclusively cater to the needs of the
SME sector. it was created to address the needs of this niche market with specialized
financial products and services that will help stimulate SME development and poor
growth in the country.
ORIGIN OF THE TERM BANK
The word bank was borrowed in Middle English from old Italian. Benches were used as
deks or exchange counters during the renaissance by Florentine bankers who used to
make their transactions atop desks covered by green tablecloths. It has not far been
decided as to how the word bank orginated .
BANKING IN PAKISTAN
fter Independence gained from the ‘British Empire’ in 1947, the State Bank of Pakistan
was established as the Central Bank of the country. The first bank of Pakistan was
established 80 years ago in 1941 as the Founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah
persuaded the wealthiest Family of Pakistan to establish a commercial bank that could
serve a Muslim State. The formation of Pakistan in 1947 resulted in the first Pakistani
bank to move its headquarters to Karachi and that Bank was called ‘Habib Bank’.
Pakistan was introduced to the Banking system since its inception.
3. SME BANK INTRODUCTION
The SME Bank was formed and incorporated as a public limited company under the

1. We will be the leading institution for providing financial assistance for the

2. We will respond to the needs of Small and Medium Enterprises by providing
them with necessary financial assistance and business support services in the
form of short to long term funds.
3. Will, through support of SME sector, contribute to the growth of local
entrepreneurs, develop export markets and provide employment opportunities
in the country.
