Yet the challenges, benefits and impact on the engineering culture are very similar. In 2015, LinkedIn’s flagship application adopted a continuous delivery model we called 3x3: deploy to production 3 times a day, with a 3 hour maximum time from commit to production. At LinkedIn scale - hundreds of engineers building products for 500M users - implementing 3x3 was really hard. How did 3x3 change LinkedIn engineering culture and what we have learned on the way? Mockito is a top 3 Java library with ~2M users. Even with that large user base, since 2014, the Mockito project has taken the surprising approach of publishing a new version of the library from every single pull request. This approach is challenging and innovative in the Java community, and Mockito leverages Shipkit to ship every change to production. Why did the Mockito team adopt continuous delivery in 2014 and what we have learned to date? With the rise of Docker, we have seen an unprecedented interest in container technologies where small companies and big enterprises bet their future on these technologies. This trend bases on an immense adoption of containers from software developers. And it has been agreed upon that they are considered highly beneficial for modern engineering practices like Agile and DevOps. But there is a new kid in town that proclaims a more radical approach: Serverless or FaaS: Function-As-A-Service. This paradigm suggests that a developer should only write functions and react to events. The functions are written in high-level programming languages like Javascript, Java or Python, and the underlying compute infrastructure like containers or VMs is transparent to the user. That raises the question: Is the container revolution already dead before it really started? And who now needs container technologies in a serverless world? In this talk we discuss these questions from both a containers advocate and serverless fanboy viewpoints. We confront these two approaches, show the differences, individual strengths and weaknesses and where they complement each other. In his book, The Nature of the Physical World, Sir Arthur Eddington commented that “We have to appeal to the one outstanding law — the second law of thermodynamics — to put some sense into the world.” This sense-making goes beyond the physical world, too. Entropy is also essential in the fields of information and communication theory. During this lecture for the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, lecturer Andrea Goulet discussed the application of entropy-related concepts in two communication systems: software and collaborative teams. She examined how concepts that help us understand systemic statistical disorder, such as ergodic systems, Lyapunov exponents, Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, and Shannon-entropy can help us optimize for both software quality and innovation. She also provided several domain-specific models: Lehman’s Laws and Conway’s Law for software, as well as new models from her own research that relate to entropy and innovation. Entropy helps us understand the world and achieve great things. There is an underlying beauty in its principles that we can use to advance scientific discovery. When we understand the subtleties related to balancing surprise and structure, we increase our chances for effective collaboration and finding novel solutions to complex problems.

This is a classic migration case study (the past, current and the future) at scale from a world-wide company transitioning from Confluent Platform and Confluent Cloud to self-managed Apache Kafka on Kubernetes using Strimzi. At Maersk, we have been architecting, designing and implementing our 3rd generation Event Streaming Platform. This platform is based on Kubernetes in Azure and using Strimzi to operate Apache Kafka at large scale, highly reliable, segregating data based on isolated use cases. Our 2nd generation was based on OnPrem Confluent Platform and Confluent Cloud and this presentation is the story of this migration and reasoning behind it. Furthermore, we would get into details on how we monitor (Grafana, Prometheus), alert (GoAlert and alert as code), operate and provide self-service solutions on top of Strimzi to enable business critical application in Maersk, implemented in GoLang using the GitOps deployment model with Flux and Kustomization among others. Finally, if time allows we will end with a demo of an open-source self service tool to monitor and explore the cluster with most wanted features such as topic message browsing and configuring and restarting connectors.
