CONTEXT
The Women's Premier League (WPL) is a
women's Twenty20 cricket franchise league in
India. It is owned and operated by the Board of
Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Number of teams: 5
Venues: CCI & D.Y Patil Stadium
Duration: 4th March to 26th March, 2023
Timing: 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm
7:30 pm to 11:30 pm
OBJECTIVES
Women Premier League
focuses on becoming the
game changer for women's
cricket all over the world, by
giving women's cricket its
own identity.
Second objective of WPL
was to make the league a
success by catching more
viewership.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
There is no doubt that the WPL is a historic move for women’s cricket
in India. However, there are limitations to what the WPL event can
achieve for the sport if the BCCI and Indian government do not
capitalise on this momentum.
-Women are still playing less and earning lesser than men. The
difference in their retainership is massive. Grade A women cricketers
are paid ₹50 lakh, Grade B ₹30 lakh and Grade C cricketers ₹10 lakh.
Men cricketers receive between ₹7 crore and ₹1 crore from the
highest to the lowest grade.
Another issue is the timeline of the WPL, 4th March to 26th March,
2023 which is the peak time for school students since they have
examinations in this period which will narrow the viewership of the
league.

of pace from the male-dominated cricket leagues they may be used to.

promoting gender equality in cricket and providing equal opportunities for female

India and attract more fans to the sport.
Do- The players in the WPL should be paid more to attract and retain top talent this
