Film directors are crucial to the completion of any film. They're responsible for overseeing all aspects of the creative
process and bringing them together. This involves managing budgets, holding meetings with all departments at the
planning, execution and post-production stages of filming, and concisely and effectively communicating your visions for

You don’t need qualifications to get a job as a film director however it is essential to have a vast understanding of
filmmaking and the work that goes into it, this can be learnt through education and experience so good starting places are
making screenplays or directing a short film with friends as they don’t require a high budget
The director must work closely with editor to make sure they get the final cut of the film. The director should also work
closely with the producer
The average working hours on a film set is 10-12 hours however a director would spend extra time in meetings sorting out
aspects of production

Things to consider:
the snowman advert in particular uses comedy to show the lengths someone would go through to get an irn bru it also
uses the charm of the movie “the snowman” to make it’s product appeal to a wider audience so it uses reward power
and star power.
This advert uses an anti realist narrative to captivate the target audience with its
Animation and its use of comedy.
The snowman flies around Scottish landmarks which makes the advert more memorable
As irn bru as it is associated with irn bru

Things to consider: 2013 irn bru advert:
One irn bru advert that displays how irn bru uses comedy and Scottish pride shows a
Daughter introducing her English boyfriend to her Scottish farther. The advert uses the
Differences between Scottish and English people for humour to make it more
Memorable if it can make the audience laugh.
The advert was accompanied with the slogan “irn bru gets you through” to stick in
The heads of the audience.
The advert also has the image of an English dog on a Scottish rug which uses comedy
And a dog to appeal to a wider demographic.
The advert also appeals to people going through difficult times as it shows the Scottish man drinking irn bru to react
better to the situation

Things to consider: its not just TV adverts that irn bru uses to advertise they also use
Posters to present irn bru.
The posters use humour like most irn bru adverts to stay with people when they see it
The posters are instantly recognisable as they have the orange blue and white colour
Scheme.
The posters have slogans such as “feel phenomenal” which can also be used to stay
With passers by.
The posters also focus on a range of different people so it appeals to as many people
possible

Things to consider: irn bru 2012 advert
The irn bru 2012 advert uses its humour to make fun of the Scottish name fanny
This shows how irn bru doesn't take itself seriously and aims to appeal to Scottish
Comedy. The slogan irn brew gets you through is used again in this advert to appeal to
People who are having a bad time. Irn bru uses comedy in it adverts as its memorable
And could encourage people to share the advert with others.
The advert has a focal point on family and humour as its main point of interest

Things to consider:
The irn bru can keeps the colour scheme of orange blue and white
the colour scheme stands out as the bright orange stands out
The blue and white is representative of the Scottish flag
The can features an image of a man lifting up the letters which could be used to show
Aspiration, pride and experts basically selling irn bru as a drink for self betterment
It has the slogan ‘original and best’
14. Market research:
Put your market research here.
Things to consider:
20 cans of irn bru are sold every second in Scotland
Coca cola is the worlds leading soft drinks company and this is mainly due to the way they advertise their product
Irn bru is presented as a UK based and it needs to be legalised for America so it can be a more recognised and have more
consumption. Companies such as coca cola or PepsiCo present themselves as global companies however irn bru fails to
advertise itself as a global company as it’s main sales are in Scotland. Coca cola and Pepsi are invested in companies such
as Starbucks or costa so the can sell their products in cafes as well as shops were as irn bru has no large food chain its
connected to. Barr company needs to be more focused on getting its product
Imported into more companies such as America or find a way to sell it’s product
In cafes or restaurants in order to stand a chance against larger companies or to
Sell more products.
15. Market research:
Put your market research here.
Things to consider:
Barr company has its main opposition of coca cola and PepsiCo as these two companies are the main soft drink providers
and the most well known brands.
Comparing an irn bru advert to a coca cola advert there are clear differences as the irn brew adverts use humour and
reward power to make its product appealing whereas coca cola in their Christmas advert uses its colour scheme of red
and white to draw attention, it uses the star power of having Santa present the product, it uses the slogan “give a little
happiness” to make it more memorable and it uses the reward power of offering limited addition glass bottles to make
people want to buy it.
Another coca cola advert from 2018 the ‘share a coke advert’ also uses humour like an irn bru advert as it shows a man
being stopped from drinking a coke as he needs to friend the person who gave him it, unlike most irn bru adverts this has
an increased emphasis on reward power as it shows that drinking coke could get you a friend this is persuasive as it
shows that drinking hope brings people happiness. Irn bru needs to use it advertising more effectively to appeal to a
wider audience than the UK without loosing its Scottish roots.

younger audience. More males drink irn bru than
females but only by a small amount so it’s advertising
appeals slightly more to a male audience. Irn bru also
appeals more to people with left wing views.

This shows that irn bru is popular with gamers but it also shows

Irn bru is correlated with two pizza brands which shows that irn bru
markets itself through pizza companies and restaurants. Irn bru is
also correlated with alcohol such as beer and vodka and this shows
that people could enjoy drinking irn bru with some kind of alcohol.
Irn bru is also correlated with with
streaming services such as Netflix. This
shows that irn bru has a strong
audience that enjoys watching TV
shows and movies.
19. Idea Generation:
Advertisement: TV advert, radio advert and a game
advertisement
Idea 1
If someone drinks irn bru they
become a Scottish warrior,
this could link into the
comedic approach to irn bru’s
advertisements while keeping
it’s Scottish themes. It could
work well in TV as it’s fairly
simple and only requires a
change of costume. It only
needs a change of accent for
radio and it’s a good idea to
explore through game design
as it can be used in many
different ways.
Idea 2
A student takes a a can of irn
bru into a classroom, the tutor
confiscates it and drinks it. This
could easily be adapted into TV
or radio however it would be
difficult to adapt into a game as
there aren’t many possibilities
to this other than getting
chased by the tutor to avoid
having the irn bru confiscated.
Idea 3
Someone goes for a job
interview and manages to get
the job by using irn bru to
persuade the interviewer. This
could be turned into a TV
advert easily and it could be a
game where you need to use
irn bru to beat the
competition to the job . This
would be difficult to adapt
into a radio advert as the
dialogue could be difficult to
get right.
21. Idea Generation: Irn bru mind map
The radio adverts would
need to be short and
effective and
encapsulate the the
theme of the TV advert
and should contain a
memorable slogan.
22. Idea Generation:
Game advert: I wanted to develop ideas on
the game advert to decide which of the
original ideas I should choose to develop
further.
1. You play as a student who becomes a
warrior by drinking irn bru and needs to
defeat an evil drinks company that’s Taken
over Scotland. It will be in the style of a plat
former where you collect irn bru and
Scottish items as power ups while fighting
against the evil drinks. I like this idea the
most for game design as I feel like I could do
a lot with it and it’s the most imaginative
2. This game would probably be the
most difficult one to make as there
aren’t many things to do with the idea.
The one game plan I thought of for idea
two was a game where your chased by a
teacher that want to drink your irn bru
and you can only win once you escape
the college and you lose if your caught
by the teacher.
3. The game idea I had for the 3rd idea
was where you need to defeat your job
competition in order to pass an interview.
This game would be in the style of a plat
former where you have to fight potential
employees to get a job at irn bru
23. Planning Docs (TV Advert):
Use the Irn Bru Project UAL 2017 presentation to see the planning requirements. Include all the required planning.
You may need to copy this slide several times, so you can fit all the work on here.
24.
25.
26.
27.
28. Planning Docs (Advergame):
How the game will play
You play as a student that has to escape the school before the teacher confiscates all of your irn bru and if you escape you
get a voucher for a free irn bru.
In the game you need to escape the school by collecting items to distract the teacher and trying to find the key to get out
of the front doors. If your caught by the teacher then you lose a can of irn bru, if you lose all three cans then you lose the
game so the amount of irn bru you have is your life in the game.
the game will be a side scrolling game where you can go into different classrooms and find different items to helps open
other rooms or distract the teacher.
30. Sound effects needed for the game
I will need to record various sound effects for the characters movements and actions in
the game.
Footsteps for when the character is walking
The sound of a can opening when you collect a can of irn bru
I’ll need to record a sound that plays whenever you collect a reward
I need a sound effect for when the teacher steals your irn bru
I need to record the sound of a door creaking open for whenever you go in a room.
