- Today I'm happy to present our new web series Moderation Town.
- Here's a wake-up call. You're here today because somebody tricked you into believing that the internet was a great itdea. I'm sorry, but you're all wrong – and I've got the numbers to prove it.
- In fact, most of the internet is complete garbage. 97% of all emails sent last year were spam. 9 out of 10 people in this room have 'accidentaly' looked at pornography. But the most surprising stat for me is that for every thousand pages accessed, a troll is corrupting the internet.
- This is why the internet has moderators. There are real people right now who's job is to look for the worst parts of the internet and make sure that you don't have to see them.
- And they suffer for it. The New York Times said about moderators: "They have no idea that some of the despicable and illegal images they will see can haunt them for the rest of their lives." I've done this job myself and it's true. When you stop flinching at donkey porn, it really starts to affect your dinner time conversations.
- So this is how we came to create Moderation Town. We saw small towns turning into call centres overnight an we thought - wouldn't it be insane if an entire town went from this quaint place to full-on, drink from the firehose culture of internet moderation.
- What we came up with was a web series that explores what happens with the crazy parts of the internet that you'd rather forget actually become the culture of real life. Because the internet is our real life now.
- And that's who we're targetting with Moderation Town. This growing demographic of 'Net Natives' that live and breathe the internet because they work all day on a computer and the first thing they do when they get home is jump back online.
- So we got our dream team. Showcase.ca is on board promoting the series. We pulled in the Director of This Hour has 22 Miinutes and the writer for the Jimmy Fallon Show and we filled the cast with stand-up comedians.
- And so right now, we're at six episodes, but we've got plans for many more. Our goal is to be a mainstream destination for the latest web trends. We want you to laugh and connect with the what's new and funny and bizarre..
- But we can't do it alone – in addition to our partners we're looking for sponsors and distributors who really want to embrace the web. We're also counting on the word of mouth buzz from tastemakers like you, so I'll give you a taste now with our trailer. I hope you love it and tell the world about it.
