2. DEFINATION OF FLOATING FOUN.
For a floating raft foundation, or floating foundation, the foundation has a volume
such that, were that volume filled with soil, it would be equal in weight to the total
weight of the structure. When the soil is so soft that not even friction piles will
support the building load, the final option is the use of a floating foundation,
making the building like a boat that obeys Archimedes’ principle .
3. FLOATING FOUNDATION
A floating foundation consists of boxlike rigid structures set at such a depth below
ground that the weight of the soil removed to place it equals the weight of the
building
thus, once the building is completed, the soil under it will bear the same weight it
bore before excavation was begun.
4. FLOATING FOUNDATION
Floating foundation was a necessary innovation in
the development of tall buildings in the wet soil
of Chicago in the 19th century, floating foundation
was developed by John Wellborn Root.
5. In simple words when the foundation is not supported by rigid soil mass or
rock below the earth surface and it rest completely over the soil similar in
friction pile then the foundation is termed as Floating foundation
e.g. Raft foundation
Pile foundation is a type of floating foundation, in which footing gets its
support only by skin friction..

making the building like a boat that obeys Archimedes’ principle, it is buoyed
up by the weight of the earth displaced in creating the foundation.

9. REVIEWER
The earliest precursor to the modern version may
be the concrete rafts developed for the building
of Millbank Prison in 1815 by Robert Smirke
(architect).
10. Millbank Prison was a prison
in Millbank, Pimlico, London, originally constructed
the National Penitentiary, and which for part of its
history served as a holding facility for convicted
prisoners before they were transported to Australia.
was opened in 1816 and closed in 1890.
Millbank Prison in the 1820s.
11. BENEFITS
Maintenance free.
No antifouling or treatment needed.
Very large floating foundations can be built using the FlexBase system.
Enables floating homes to be seen as buildings so they can have build regulations
applied to them.
Fantastic longevity when compared to steel hulls (in fact, even better than many
house foundations).
