Common Cultural Adjustment Challenges
international students:
• Language - Conversational English and professor lectures can
be challenging and frustrating to understand.
• Academic Demands - Succeeding in a new environment with
new language with pressure for family to succeed.
• Food Adjustment – A lack of familiar food options combined
with certain unhealthy American foods may lead to
homesickness.
• Financial Challenges – A lack of funding and an inability to
work in the USA outside of the university may cause
frustration and stress.
Strategies for Adaptation:
Outside the classroom:
• Speak English as often as possible by developing American
friendships
• Get involved
• Eat a healthy variety of foods (stay away from too much “fast
food”.)
• Be aware of your potentially unhealthy drinking habits
• Make a financial plan prior to coming
• Be aware of US immigration policy regarding employment of
international students
• Make a study plan and stick to it
• Seek assistance from your international office
Strategies for Adaptation
In the classroom:
• Get to know your professors
• Ask for written information if you cannot understand an
assignment or lecture
• Find an American student to help
• Seek out tutoring (reading center, writing center or English as
a Second language)
