 The activity to lead a group of people and
organization or the ability to do it. ( dictionary.com)
 A process of social influence in which a person can
enlist the aid and support of others in the
accomplishment of a common task". ( wikipedia)
 The ability to make decisions and motivate others to
perform well. ( investopedia)

Common understanding
 In common understanding leadership involves :
1. Establishing a clear vision
2. Source of knowledge, information and methods
3. Balancing and coordinating among team members.
4. Providing solutions of challenges and problems.
5. Motivating subordinates for common goal.
6. Rewarding the performers and develop the
underperformers.
7. Maintaining the discipline within group and taking strict call
when necessary.

Features:
 Most ancient form of leadership.
 Leaders are, “ Do as I say type”
 They have very subjective idea
of what success is.
 They want their followers to
execute their ideas in non-
corrective and narrow way.
 They hardly provide any options
and show readiness to
suggestion.

Benefits and challenges.
Benefits
1. Fast decision making
process due to
centralization.
2. Can be useful for strict
regimented forces and
unskilled task oriented
situations.
Challenges
1. There is very low co creation
and that results to
demotivation for followers.
2. Many of the times there are
revolts against this leaders
and that creates hamper of
work flow.
3. This leadership is potential
removal of future leaders
from the group.

Features
 Leaders rely on stated policies
for organizational success.
 They are . “ Do what is written”
type.
 They are strongly committed to
policies and procedures instead
of people.
 They are comfortable under the
stated procedure

1. Fast paced decision making
and strategy formation is
possible on proper
implementation.
2. As there is everything
defined so there will be no
challenge finding the proper
person.
3. Policy and process is not
always perceived to be
ineffective.
Challenges
 This type of leadership is not
flexible and can’t change within
the need of hour.
 Motivation and development do
not happen under this type of
leadership.
 Leadership faces resistance,
disinterest and demotivation
from followers.
 This system prevents thinking
process, innovation and
creativity

Features
 In this leadership decision
making process is on team.
 Every member of team comes to
an conclusion while making a
decision.
 Instead of any formal leadership
in this style the group leads
themselves.

1. Apparently most easy
leadership style.
2. This style try to build
equal amount of stake for
everyone.
3. Everyone feels important
to be a part of decision
making process.
Challenges
 Process becomes very slow
and difficult to find consensus
among group even on trivial
issues.
 People may lose the interest
on decision due to too much of
opinion.
 There is always a chance of
more controversy than
conclusion.
 Good in theory only

 Leadership with a vision and
personality to motivate followers
to go for the vision.
 They sound like the best case
scenario and whom can be
bindfoldedly follow.
 This leadership provides fertile
ground for creativity and
innovation.

 The main challenge of this
style is that it rarely develops
replacement leaders.
 Once the leader is out the entire
system stops functioning.
 This is not a very development
pro leadership style.

strong potential future leaders
and competition for future.

leadership from past.
2. Followers are attracted by
leader and motivated to
follow his vision.

leadership in professional

ambiguity, purely defined.

sometimes adopt the
benefits of charismatic
leaders to motivate on deal.

to follow and if there is no
false promises, this

Challenges
 This leadership depends on
give and take , so often there
is a chance of expectation
mismatch.
 In lean times when there is
not much things to offer these
leaders face difficulty to move
the ball.

 This leadership uses knowledge,
vision and experience to change
the group behavior to make
them aligned to the goal.
 This leadership provides the
chance to followers to change,
transform and develop.
 Transformational leaders create
quality resources for next line.

opportunity to develop, so in
absence of the leader also it
will not be difficult to achieve

 In this style there is no
artificial constraints and
decision making problem.

laden environment, this

 Primary challenge is it takes
time to develop this kind of a
leadership style.
 There may be possibility of
creating to many leaders in a
group.
