Project Accomplishments
1. A Few Project Accomplishments at Terre Haute Regional
Arc-flashanalysis
Collecteddatausedtocomplete anarc-flashanalysisforthe hospital.Analysisresultswerethenusedto
properlylabel powerdistributionequipmentwiththe appropriatewarning labels.Staff PPEwas
reevaluatedbasedonresults.
Benefitwasincreasedsafety formaintenance staff.ProperlyratedHRCclothingwasissuedtostaff
basedon jobduties. The studyalsojustifiedthe purchase of specializedPPEandtools.Examples:
Certified/ratedinsulatedtoolsforhotwork.Arc-flashratedhood,suit,glovesandbootsfor
maintenance performedonswitchgears.
Organization of facilitypreventive maintenance logs
Restructuring,reorganizingthe preventive maintenance logstomeetThe JointCommissionstandards.
AlsorecordedanymissinginformationorPMs.Createda simple database referencingthe missing
material withitsidentification,brief descriptionanddate foundmissing.Thiswasaddedtoeverynew
logcreated. All PMs olderthanone yearwere discardedandfolderswere arrangedsothatall
subsequentPMswouldbe replacedwiththeirnewercounterpart.
Our proactive andhonestapproachto the restructuring, reorganizingthe preventive maintenance logs
mostlikelysavedthe hospitalmoneyinthe formof finesatthe nextJointCommissionandstate
inspection.Wasinformedthatinbothinspectionsthe surveyorswere impressedwiththe easyto
reference formatandour“up front”approach to the missingPMs.Theywere satisfiedthat we hadfixed
any priorissuesandthat we were dedicatedtomaintainingournew systemof documentation.
PM improvementand standardization
In the processof PM reorganization, itwasdiscoveredthatmanyPMswere ethernotstandardized,
NFPA compliant, manufacture recommendedorsome combinationof. All PMswere reviewedandany
foundlackingwere replacedwithmanufacture recommendedprocedures.AnyPMnot well definedwas
rewritteninaclear andconcise format.Prints,diagrams,checklistsandlocation chartswere addedas
neededsothateverypiece of equipmentwasinspectedandall keypointsinthe PMwere covered.
Possiblysavedmoneyinfines.Equipmentwasbettermaintained,sopotentiallystayedinservice longer
and performedwithahigherrate of reliability.Betterpatientcare wasobtainedbynotinterruptingthe
healingprocessthroughfewerbreakdowns.Thiswill inturnleadtohighersatisfactionrates.
Passive Fire Protection Evaluation
Involvedinthe evaluationof all the passive fire protectionsystemswithinthe hospital. Thisincluded
but notlimitedto:panichardware,dooroperation, doorratings,NFPA egresscompliance,fire wall
ratingsand identification,fire wall integrity,fire stopmeetingthe ASTME 814 (UL 1479) & CAN/ULC
S115 standards.
2. Studyfoundmajorlife safetyviolationsthatendangeredthe occupantsof the building.Especiallyif
there hadbeena fire incertainareas of the buildingasthere were entire sectionsof fire wall rated
assemblies missingornotcompleted.New wallpenetrationshadnotbeenproperlyprotectedforyears.
Thisleadto the repairof all violationsandthe retrainingof staff inNFPA/IBCconstructioncompliance.
Contractor Supervision/Life SafetyCompliance
It shouldbe notedthatthe Passive Fire ProtectionEvaluation alsorevealednon-compliancebymanyof
the sub-contractorsusedbyTHRH. A pre-joblife safetyreview andtrainingprogramwasthemcreated
by the directorto helpcombat the lack of non-compliantperformance fromcontractors.Iwas
responsible forthe dailytaskof coveringmaterial such asproperfire wall penetrationmethodsto
properhandlingof debris andcontaminantcontrol.Iwasalsotaskedto performrandomdaily
inspectionsof workperformedandworksite life safety compliance.Examplesincluded dustbarrier
integrity,stickymatusage andproperinstallationandmaintenanceof roomnegative airmachines.
