2. • Chipko movement, also called Chipko andolan, nonviolent
social and ecological movement by rural villagers, particularly
women, in India in the 1970s, aimed at protecting trees and
forests slated for government-backed logging.

• Sunderlal Bahuguna has started Chipko movement . Sunderlal
Bahuguna gave a direction to the movement and his appeal
to Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, resulted in
the ban of cutting trees. His appeal resulted in a 15-year ban on
chopping of green trees in 1980.

• In modern India, Chipko Movement started in April 1973
in Uttar Pradesh's Mandal village in the
upper Alakananda valley. Soon it spread to other Himalayan
districts of the state. The Chipko Movement was triggered by
a government decision to allot forest land to a sports goods
company.

GOVERNAMENT. Van Mahotsav is an annual pan-Indian tree
planting festival, occupying a week in the month of July. During
this event millions of trees are planted. ... Munshi, the then
Union Minister for Agriculture and Food to create an enthusiasm
in the mind of the populace for the conservation of forests and
planting of trees.
