The mechanical engineer Charles Edward Taylor
developed, in just six weeks, a water-cooled
12 HP 4-stroke motor, featuring an aluminium
block and weighing only 69 kg. There had
never been anything like it in the USA before.
This is what made it possible for Orville Wright,
in Kitty Hawk, in December 1903, to perform
mankinds first motorised flight.
Behind all these technical achievements there
are always the right people. Those who make
it all happen by applying their experience,
knowledge, energy and dedication to their
work.

this history is heading. This was already the case
when motorised transport was in the hands of
such bold adventurers as Lilienthal, the Wright
brothers, or Carl Benz. Who would have dreamt,
back then, that 130 years after the first patented
automobiles, there would be electric cars, high-
speed trains, passenger jets, moon landings and
satellites orbiting the earth?

EXTENDING YOUR SUCCESS
THROUGH BETTER PROCESSES
In 1913 the young engineer Otto Reuter applied for a
position at the research institute of Hugo Junkers. But his
opportunity for collaboration would not be realised until
two years later. In the meantime Junkers had started an
engagement in aircraft manufacturing and was on the
lookout for a small engines expert. Reuter did not want
to miss out on this chance and accepted the position, on
the same day the J1 lifted off as the first all-metal aircraft
in the world without braces. The crux – and Hugo
Junkers was aware of this from the beginning – was the
engine. And Reuter was supposed to address exactly that
problem thereafter.
He tinkered with a 400-HP gasoline engine for at least a
year and a half, but it didn't pan out for series production.
Even though a solution to improve the engine had not
been developed yet, Junkers and Reuter began working
on, a new undertaking: to make aircraft lighter and at the
same time stronger. Their interest and trust was in the
new alloy Duraluminium. Especially since Junkers plant
had the aim of bringing a completely new aircraft to the
market.
In early January 1919, Reuter presented his design plan
for the F13. Half a year later, on 25 June, the first
all-metal aeroplane used in civil aviation took off on its
maiden flight. The low wing aircraft had room for four
passengers and two crew members. The load-bearing
corrugated metal outer skin went on to become the
distinctive Junkers trademark, which continues even to
this day. The F13 was Junker's breakthrough design. By
1932 approximately 320 machines had been built and as
early as the summer of 1925, almost 40 % of the world-
wide air transport routes were flying Junkers aircraft.
The Reuter and Junkers design principle lay the
foundation for the wide-bodied aircraft of today. As only
standardised manufacturing processes could enable
efficient production on an industrial scale. Today's
aeroplanes are a means of mass transport; whose
longevity is still being prolonged with ever lighter
materials.

THROUGH FASTER PROJECTS
The physicist Hans Joachim Pabst von Ohain began
working on a new kind of aircraft engine in an auto-
motive repair shop. Together with Max Hahn, an auto
mechanic, he started to develop a propeller-free engine
in 1934. He received a patent for it as early as 1937 –
even though his demonstration model turned out to be
unusable. The aeroplane designer and entrepreneur
Ernst Heinkel liked this idea so much that he set up a
closed off area in his Heinkel Works specifically for von
Ohain and Hahn projects.
Heinkel also made available Wilhelm Grundermann, an
experienced designer, as well as other technical staff to
the two aeronautics pioneers. Together they developed a
liquid-fuelled jet engine, which finally led to the first jet
flight humanity had ever mastered on the 27th of August
1939. With this von Ohain came in a good 1 ½ years
earlier than the Englishman Frank Whittel. Whittel had
been working on a jet engine since 1930 – a way apart
from Hans von Ohain.
The team surrounding von Ohain, Hahn and Grunder-
mann was living the dream of flying. Their success was
never the result of one individual, but rather could only
be achieved as a team in such a short time. Yet the final
impulse was given by Heinkel – who was willing to be
inspired by an idea and to facilitate its success.

Six years after the Wright Brothers had written aviation
history in Kitty Hawk, Lawrence Sperry lifted off with a
glider that he had designed and built himself. Fascinated
by flying, four years later he got his training and certi-
fication as an aeroplane pilot. He made history as a
pioneer in aviation – without having any classic technical
training. But he was sure that his ideas were the signi-
ficant steps in the further development of an aircraft.
What he was missing was the opportunity to turn them
into a reality. That is what he finally found in his father's
company.
The Sperry Gyroscope Company had specialised in the
manufacture and development of nautical navigation
devices. Lawrence Sperry was successful in making
autopilots that were already available for maritime,
smaller, more lightweight and even more powerful. This
made them possible to be used in aeroplanes. He
presented, as early as 1914, in France, what this tech-
nology would be able to do for the industry: A Curtiss
B-2 was able to fly in a horizontal, stable line without the
pilots having to intervene.
Today's autopilots are able to control an aircraft from
take-off to landing completely autonomously. For
example freighters have regular supply routes to the
International Space Station. And the newest develop-
ment are drones, which deliver packages, take the
internet to remote areas and are used during
emergency situations.
Elmer Ambrose Sperry and his son Lawrence Sperry
created the foundation for autonomous flying. All this
was only possible because both knew that they could
profit from each other's knowledge and by pursuing a
common goal.

When the Wright Flyer I made its first independent lift-
off of man-made machine, nobody had any idea that
this was going to be the starting point of an entire
industry. What followed was the rapid development of
technology: Today we fly with electric engines or even
unmanned. Also other industries look back on strong
innovative growth: For example cars can park them-
selves at the push of a button, satelittes navigate
through space using X-ray pulsars and cruise ships are
already build with hybrid engines.
The technical discoveries achieved in those processes
benefited us all in the long run. All industries continue
to work ceaselessly and always under pressure to
come up with new concepts for making their technical
products even lighter, more powerful and always more
comfortable. Once we have reached these goals, we
immediately get started on the next one.
We are only limited by our imagination on what
technology will look like 100 years from now.
One thing is sure though, ARTS will be actively shaping that vision.
