5. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The report titled “Taiwan Solar Photovoltaic Market Outlook to 2015” provides a
comprehensive analysis on various aspects such as On-Grid and Off-Grid Cumulative and
Annual Installed Capacity, PV power per capita, market segmentation and competitive
landscape of the major players operating in the country. The report also entails the SWOT
analysis of solar PV market in Taiwan.
The future outlook presented the base case, conservative case and aggressive case
scenario factor analysis providing an insight on the prospects in the solar PV cumulative
and annual installed capacity for the country.
Taiwan is only behind China in terms of production of silicon PV cells worldwide. The
two together held a market share of nearly 60%. The country has a stable supply chain
network with products ranging from various silicon products to solar modules. The
country has emerged as one of the manufacturing centre for PV products especially in
Asia Pacific region.
Taiwan Solar PV annual installed capacity has registered strong growth in the past. The
major factors which have driven the growth are the improvement in conversion efficiency
along with decreased cost of electricity generation which is further expected to reduce in
the price per watt of the electricity. In the near future, the technological advancement is
likely to take place in either PV equipments or in terms of processing which will have a
direct bearing on the PV market.
In 2006, only 1 MW of annual installed capacity was registered in the country. The
country has witnessed a CAGR of 86.1% during the period from 2006-2010 and reached
12 MW in 2010.
The solar power consumption per watt per inhabitant has registered an increase over the
years. Although the country is relatively new in the field of PV technology, the country is
set to witness an increase in the consumption. During the historical period, the
photovoltaic power per inhabitant per watt has increased from 0.1 watt/inhabitant in 2006
to 1.0 watt/inhabitant in 2010.
With the current business trend, Taiwan is expected to witness several business
opportunities with government support and solar energy being considered as a strategic
industry. It is expected that solar PV industry will reach over USD ~ billion by 2015. The
market size will be largely driven by the countries emerging position as one of the largest
suppliers of thin-film silicon cells and modules in the global market. The fast adoption of
5
6. thin film solar equipment will aid the solar PV market to grow and propel. The domestic
market is expected to foresee large solar power plants installations. The new installations
in 2011 are also expected to increase to ~ MW from 12 MW in 2010. By 2015, the annual
installations will grow to ~ MW.
