We are living in a populist moment where hard lines are being drawn between “regular people” and “the elite.” How does the populist idea that power should be shared by everyone in a democratic society apply to the fields of architecture and urban design? Are there ways in which highly trained design professionals can collaborate more effectively with diverse communities? How would buildings and places change as a result? This discussion explores the intersection between design ideas and populist desires, and suggests a path toward inclusive and meaningful community engagement.
