Indentical Twins with Cerebral Palsy Bring Double Dedication

  1. 1. Lopez Brother’s Bring Double the Dedication It's not often you hear of identical twins with cerebral palsy. Even rarer is to find brothers who've contributed to the rich history of AbilityFirst in such unique ways. But that's the story of Don and Dennis Lopez. First marginalized in a non-productive special school, Don soon became bored and began doing the homework of his 12 other brothers and sisters to keep busy. When properly tested and evaluated, he was able to attend regular school and has worked full-time as a database manager & researcher for many years- the last seven here at AbilityFirst. Beyond work, he has a 14-year-old son with whom he practices karate - Don earned a black belt in only six months! In 1977, the Lopez family began their relationship with AbilityFirst. Don's mother Mary met an AbilityFirst staff member who realized that Dennis, age 20, legally blind and with limited dexterity, could be trained for a productive career. Today, he's one of our longest serving work center employees. It's hard to believe, but Dennis has been part of the AbilityFirst family for 36 years, and is a fixture at events such as our annual Stroll & Roll fundraiser! Don can't say enough about what AbilityFirst means to him. "I love working here because the people are so compassionate. I'm grateful to AbilityFirst for giving my brother a job he loves. Though our paths have been different, AbilityFirst has allowed me and my brother to continue to reach beyond disabilities. Our mission is outstanding and my entire family supports it. There's not a more deserving organization because of the lasting impact we have on the lives of the families we serve."
