The Australian Diabetes Educators Association
(ADEA) is the leading organisation for health
professionals providing diabetes education and
care.
The ADEA Code of Conduct sets the minimum
standards expected of ADEA members. It provides
a framework for, but is not limited to, their:
• clinical practice and competence
• engagement with the ADEA
• respect of client’s choices
• collaboration with other health professionals

meeting in conjunction with the Australian Diabetes
Society (ADS).

7. WHAT IS A CREDENTIALLED DIABETES
EDUCATOR (CDE)?
Credentialled Diabetes Educators (CDEs)
are healthcare practitioners qualified to
provide a client-centred approach to
diabetes education and care, empower
patients and assist them in dealing with
daily self-management, in accordance with
the National Standards of Practice for
Credentialled Diabetes Educators.

8. CDES PROVIDE A STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE
CDEs:
Assist in creating positive outcomes for patients,
their families and the community
Are a mentor, confidant and advocate for patients
and their families
Serve as a leader and teach others from their
knowledge and skills in diabetes education, care
and management
Aim to improve health and prevent progression of
disease
Teach day to day lifestyle management skills
Dedicate an ongoing commitment to professional
development and learning

practice settings and roles and across the intervention
and care continuum. Their practice is underpinned by a
core body of knowledge, skills and activity in the

Health professionals who have met the criteria of
Credentialling and are registered in an eligible
primary health discipline for at least 2 years, can
apply for this advanced recognition.

18. RECOGNITION IN HEALTHCARE
CDEs are recognised by:
Medicare Australia as the providers of diabetes
education under the Medicare Benefits Schedule,
the Department of Veterans Affairs as the providers
of diabetes education for veterans,
the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) for
the purposes of authorising consumer registration
on the NDSS,
Private Health Insurers who offer their customers
rebates for Diabetes Education services.
