Analysing Film Trailers
The November Man
Juwayriyah Bibi
Genre
• The genre of this trailer is crime. You are able to see this through
the mise-en-scene including props such as guns as well as music,
dialogue and setting.
• There is a lot of planning, plotting and killing that is seen throughout
the few minutes of the trailer
• The mysterious and steady beat music that is throughout the trailer
also links in with the genre, making the atmosphere seem
mysterious.
• We see characters trying to hide and find out who their targets are.
As well as showing that the audience will be expecting the mission to
be accomplished and success.

Narrative
• Opening- introduce to the main man, while thee is dialogue about the
main man, the action is happening to show the audience what the
character is like.
• Build-up- we then are introduced to the main mans ‘helpers’ who tell
him who the target is and what mission he must accomplish. We are
also shown the settings, which are rough, chaotic and damaged.
• Problems- there is a lot of killing, explosions. There is a strive to
stay alive but to also find and kill the target.
• Events-there are many events taking place in one scene, including
‘killer VS killer’, and other events such as searching and
investigating the targets. They are all trying to achieve their own set
aims.

Unique Selling Point
• Main characters
• Special effects
• Action
• Voiceover and dialogue speak out what the audience will be
expecting
Target Audience
• The target audience for this trailer would be 25-35 yr old
males. This is mainly because the main characters are
males. Also crime genre is typically associated with this age
group because films with a mix of thriller, action and crime
will appeal to this age group especially males.
Music
• We hear gun shots and explosions throughout, which have
been edited so that they sound louder and more dramatic.
• There is a steady beat throughout the trailer which stays
the same; it only gets faster at points where there is high
amounts of action.
• The music also heightens when key scenes are shown such
as the fight between the main man (killer) and the other
killer. Also scenes such as when he is searching for the full
profile of the target on his laptop.
Shot types
• There is a long shot of the main man at the beginning, and we draw
closer into a close up of him as he is being talked about.
• There is a wide shot of the setting to show where the film/scene is set.
• We see a high angle shot from the helicopter as the man targets the
location below him.
• We get a medium shot when he is looking at the girls profile on the
papers in his hand and then a close up of his face to see reactions and
emotions. There is a two shot as the 2 men talk and the camera switches
from one to another, then occasionally to the action in the scene.
• There are also many close-ups to show the main targets and the main
killers.
• When there is dialogue the camera cuts from one scene to another to
show the pace of the film.
Captions from the trailer- Shot types
Pace
• There is a montage of different events/scenes to show fast
paced motion.
• The pace slows down when there is dialogue and
investigations taking. Also there is slow motion when the
bullets are being aimed and when things are being blown up
to give a better effect and make the action last longer.
However, there are still not many dissolves to show that the
pace is generally fast
• As son as there is danger, the pace fastens and there are
numerous cuts to show scene to scene.
Dialogue
• The dialogue in this trailer doesn’t always match the scene but it still
links in with what is going on. This is asynchronous.
• When the man is talking about the main man at the beginning, it is
like a voiceover as we are being told the main mans personality and
generally what is going on. However, we occasionally go back to the
mans face who is speaking so that it is not a voiceover but is
actually dialogue.
• There is generally a lot of dialogue throughout the trailer unlike
typical trailers with only one line dialogues. This may be because the
audience need to be aware of what the situation is what the mission
is. Also it makes the audience keep In track of what is going on
rather than a montage of different events that are unexplained.
Continued (dialogue)
• Whenever the main man talks, he generally only has one line
to say, which is said as though he is in a rush to show that
he is under pressure and that time is running out. Also when
he talks it is generally to give advice to someone (generally
the girl) to show his heroic character; he talks with
intelligence.
• The females in this trailer are seen as the ‘damsels’. They
ask for help and zoom up’s of their face explain their fearful
emotions.
Captions from the trailer- dialogue
Voiceover
• There is no voiceover, we just see the action as the dialogue
is heard. The reason for this is that the dialogue is almost
like the narrator, we are shown what is happening as they
talk about it, similarly the way we would if it were a
voiceover. Also, the trailer doesn’t need voiceover, because
the audience already know what to expect from this genre.
Special effects
• There are may gunshots, explosions and fires to set the scene; all
the scene look like crime scenes where there is a lot of killing,
gunshots and targets. We hear the gun being loaded, which is made
louder so that it seems more closer to us and gives the feeling of
engagement to the audience.
• We hear bullets hitting cars and smashing windows which is also a
special effect.
• As we go from the beginning to the end, we see that the main man s
involved in al the action to show that he is trying to accomplish a
mission and he is the one involved in the crime.
Captions from the trailer- special effects
Credits and Intertitles
• The name of the film is shown, the directors name and the
release date is all shown. Also in between the main bit of
action there is a flashing title “killer VS killer”, to show that
there is some serious fighting taking place. The titles are
written in black on a grey background to show formality and
to make it look like a police report. Also they look like the
font that is generally on police reports or cards. ‘relativity’
comes up at the start, which is in a different font and
different background from the other titles.
