The presentation is about the new version of DSpace-CRIS 7, the enhanced, free, open-source extensions of DSpace adopted by more than one hundred institutions around the world to better collect, manage and disseminate information on their research activities and outputs. DSpace-CRIS has always anticipated the cutting edge innovation and technologies later included in the DSpace mainstream, and version 7 includes functionalities not available in DSpace 7.
3. Why DSpace-CRIS? 1
DSpace-CRIS is an extension of DSpace, the most popular Digital Asset
Management System in the world.
The data model of DSpace-CRIS is so flexible that it allows to represent an entire
domain with its own objects and their links, to navigate seamlessly among them,
to visualize them as collaborative networks.
E.g. in an academic or research institution, you can provide information that is not
limited to publications, but spans from researchers’ profiles to their affiliations,
from datasets to projects, from scientific positions to community events, funding
organizations, etc.
4. Why DSpace-CRIS? 2
DSpace-CRIS not only adds “cards” to describe additional objects such as
researchers or affiliations.
To manage multiple entities it is not enough to have cards that collect information
and links, the needs and related functionalities are more elaborate.
DSpace-CRIS adds support for the typical processes of research information
repositories, integrated in research management or combined with external CRIS.
The creation of appropriate visualization and reports for this additional information
can be very challenging for ordinary repositories and requires the creation of
custom UI components, which in DSpace-CRIS are replaced by simple
configurations.

Organizations frequently highlight results of scientific activities only indirectly
related to them, such as publications written and projects conducted by affiliated
staff, etc. DSpace-CRIS supports the visualization of these indirect inverse
relationships natively without data duplication.
Even for these relationships it is possible to create relevant sub-lists and exclude
less relevant items without permanently affecting or altering the data.
13. OrgUnits 2
The management of the OrgUnit cards can be delegated and managed in a
granular way. While for publications (main entities in DSpace) a model of data
immutability is typically appropriate, for these other entities: orgunits, persons,
projects, etc. typically more flexibility and editing possibilities are needed.
DSpace-CRIS supports the definition of granular read and write permissions on
various entities independently. It is possible, for example, by configuration, to
allow the department secretaries to edit the project data sheets and financial
information of the projects, but leaving the responsibility for the scientific
information to the researchers.
