1. Music History
The first recorded music was before the 1800’s. A man named Martin
Gerbet published a book called De cantu de musica sacra in 1774.
Writing records of sacred music. Between the early 1800’s to the
early 1900’s music was mostly classical with
influences from German expressionism
such as Beethoven.
The biggest change came
with the dawning of the
20th century. There
was a new rise of cultural
music that came from the USA. In 1920’s America
came the genre of Blues and Jazz music, this form
of music was popular in states such as New
Orleans, Memphis, Kansas and Texas. Singers
like Billie Holliday
found their roots
with Jazz and Blues.
An early genre of
music in the late
1890s to 20’s was
Ragtime a famous
Ragtime piece was The Entertainer by
Scott Joplin. Youths often visited bars
to listen to Jazz band preforming this
was frowned upon by the older
generation.
Between the 1920’s and the 1940’s were the 1930’s. The 1930’s was
the beginning of Swing, Swing was a form of Pop Jazz, which took a
more upbeat approach to music. Amongst Swing was Country or Folk
Music, as it was often known as. Country Music began in West
Virginia. Two week recording sessions took place, which was,
were country singer Jimmie Rogers was discovered.
The 1950’s gave birth to an all-together new form of music, its
name Rock N Roll. Although Rock N Roll began in the latter of
the 50’s it was a new form of culture, which refined and shaped
the Music Industry. Focusing mainly on Teen life and was the
introduction to the Guitar Solo. Artists such as Elvis Presley,
2. Chuck Berry and Gene Vincent made their mark on music history.
The 1960’s brought The British Invasion; this is when the world was
first introduced to famous British bands such as the Beatles. The
Beatles became popular in the UK in 1962 and in America in 1964.
The appearance they made on the Ed Sullivan show was a large
career booster. Also popular was the first form of modern rock,
preformed by singers such as Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendricks.
The 70’s were the era of Disco, famous singes such as Gloria
Gaynor, Diana Ross and Donna Summers preformed in clubs
around the world. Towards the end of the 70’s came Rock
Music, bands like ACDC, Blue Oyster Cult and Kiss, grew in
popularity in a sub genre of Rock Music called heavy metal. Along
with the increased popularity Rock came Pop, one of the biggest
names in Pop was Elton John with his diverse range of songs ranging
from a Ballard to Pop Rock. Along side John were other musical
talents like, ABBA, Cat Stevens and Joan Armatrading.
Following the success of Pop Music in the 70’s the genre was
continued into the 1980. Michael Jackson went independent and
released his own solo album. Madonna released her first album Like
A Virgin. And was sweeping the charts. Rock Music was also quite
popular also known as Glam Rock; Queen was one of the bands,
which fell into this category, as did Bon Jovi and Guns N Roses. In the
late 80’s came Hip Hop a form of Rap Music with hints of Rock.
3. The 1990’s brought Teen Pop, Hip Hop, Urban R&B and Dance Music.
Popular singers such as Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and The Spice
Girls rose thru the charts.
Within the space of 10 years music genres have changed so much.
From Classic to Ragtime to Blues to Swing to Rock N Roll to Disco to
Rock to Pop the 20th centaury was probably the most diverse
centaury in terms of musical development, so far.
