Casteism refers to extreme loyalty to one's own caste that ignores other castes and human values of justice, equality, and brotherhood. It arises due to the endogamous nature of castes, desire to enhance caste prestige, technology enabling caste connections, and urbanization bringing castes together. Casteism divides society, hinders national unity, and poses dangers to democracy by encouraging nepotism over talent. It can be addressed through education, inter-caste marriage, reducing the emphasis on caste, and ensuring cultural and economic equality.

Meaning of Casteism
 Casteism is partial or one-sided loyalty in
favour of a particular caste.
 The sense of caste is converted into
casteism only when consideration of
superiority between castes

According to D.N.Prasad,
“Casteism is loyalty to the caste translated
into politics”
According to Kaka Kalekar,
“Casteism as a social problem is an over-
riding, blind and supreme group loyalty that
ignores the healthy social standards of
justice, fairplay, equity and universal
brotherhood”

6. CAUSESOFCASTEISM CAUSES OF CASTEISM
i. Endogamous Nature of the Caste :
 Members of a caste or sub-caste has to
marry within his or her own caste or sub-
caste. This practice of endogamy makes
the people narrow-minded.
ii. Strong Desire to Enhance Caste
Prestige :
 Every member thus tries his level best to
see that his caste prestige is safeguarded
and enhanced.

7. iii. Advancement of Technology
 Advancement that has taken place in the
field of transport and communication has
helped the members of the caste to be in
touch with one another regularly.
iv. Urbanisation/Migration
 When the rural people go to the cities they
naturally search for their nearer and dearer
ones on the basis of the caste
v. Powerful Hold of the Caste Over the
Members :
 Caste is a strong cohesive group. It has a
powerful hold over its members.
