2. The Script – Hall Of Fame
• The first music video I shall be analyzing is The Script’s new
music video, “Hall Of Fame” featuring will.i.am.
3. The Script – Hall Of Fame
• Above and below we see the two main characters of this music video sleeping and clearly dreaming of what they wish to be. Above
we see a man who clearly wishes to be a professional boxer and is dreaming of a thought of him about to fight in a arena. Similarly,
below is a girl dreaming of herself being a professional ballerina. The two characters both have a dream and thus the music video is
about not giving up.
4. The Script – Hall Of Fame
• Above are the obstacles that the two main characters clearly have to face as
a barrier of making their dream come true. The man’s mum is a smoker and
so living in a household of a chain smoker can’t be healthy for the man
himself. Whereas the girl is deaf (shown above is her ear piece) and so that is
her obstacle which she has to face and therefore train around and try and
ignore/deal with if she wants her dream to come true. Close up shots are
used to focus on the obstacle that they have to face, thus making it easier for
the audience to understand what difficulties and challenges they have to
overcome.
5. The Script – Hall Of Fame
• To the left are the two main characters
training to make their dream come true.
Although they have difficulties they have to
face, it still doesn’t stop them training to try
and pursue in making their dream a reality.
Here, two medium front on shots are used
to give the audience the whole picture of the
training and to show their focus and passion.
Because for our music video we would like to
do a music video about someone training to
make their dream come true, the story line
of this music video, “Hall Of Fame” almost
matches perfectly to what we were planning
on doing for our video. We shall use a
variety of shots and backgrounds to show
our character training in hard conditions to
show our characters commitment and
passion like the two characters shown in this
music video.
6. The Script – Hall Of Fame
• In addition, shots of the band
performing are used to give the
audience an image of who is
playing the song. This is done so
that the bands style and image is
shown to give the audience an
understanding of what the band
look like.
7. Gym Class Heroes – The Fighter ft. Ryan Tedder
• The next video our group decided to look at for
inspiration was The Gym Class Heroes new music
video, “The Fighter” featuring Ryan Tedder.
8. Gym Class Heroes – The Fighter ft. Ryan Tedder
• Shown above is 19 year old USA gymnast, John Orozco. He grew up in
Bronx NY raised by two amazing Puerto Rican parents that did everything
for him to make his dreams come true. You can see John featured through
the whole video. He never gives up. The lyrics talk about you having to
“get up if you fall.” His story about his life and how he got to where he
did is a true inspiration and the music video for “The Fighter” is based
about his story.
9. Gym Class Heroes – The Fighter ft. Ryan Tedder
• Close ups of the training equipment used is
shown to portray the commitment of the
athlete and what he is doing. This camera work
enables the audience to engage and understand
what the athlete does to train.
10. Gym Class Heroes – The Fighter ft. Ryan Tedder
• The establishing shot as shown above is certainly a shot that caught our
groups attention instantly due to the interest it portrays. In addition, as
well as being helpful for the audience in terms of conveying where the
athlete trains, typography is used to give the precise location of the
training facility too. An establishing shot similar to this one will certainly
be seen in our music video to show the audience a location of one of our
training scenes.
11. Gym Class Heroes – The Fighter ft. Ryan Tedder
• Throughout the music video for, “The Fighter”, black and white
shots are used to refer to the past when he was on his journey to
reaching his dream of where he is now. The black and white effect
works well and shows us how he got to where he is. The black and
white effect is something we’ll definitely use in our music video to
show how our character got to where he is by showing training
clips and other clips which may have helped him reach his dream.
12. Gym Class Heroes – The Fighter ft. Ryan Tedder
• Similarly to the previous music
video we looked at, “Hall Of
Fame”, “The Fighter” also shows
brief clips of the band
performing to show the audience
what the bands image is.
13. Foo Fighters – The Best Of You
• The next music video I am going to analyze will be the Foo Fighters classic
song “The Best Of You”. The reason for this choice is that
14. Foo Fighters – The Best Of You
• The music video was directed by Mark Pellington,
best known for his work on the video for "Jeremy" by
Pearl Jam. He was inspired by the death of his wife a
few months prior to the shoot, and was drawn to the
song's notion of dealing with pain in life.
• The video features the band playing on top of
abandoned hospital, Linda Vista Community
Hospital. Along with the band's scenes are clips that
show pain, depression, or anger as shown on the
next slide I have done.
15. Foo Fighters – The Best Of You
•Clips with children playing alone or with each other, •A zebra kicks another zebra behind itself
one scene shows one girl hugging another. •A nuclear explosion
•A car crash •A baby crying
•A lion pouncing on its prey, which is a vulture
•A snake attacks a rodent
16. Foo Fighters – The Best Of You
• Towards the end of the video when the song has more of a faster temp
compared to the rest of the song. The clips shown speed up and the
audience are shown about 30 different clips in a 30 second time period.
This works well due to the fact that the clips shown are in time with the
fast tempo of the music whilst also showing lots of clips relating to the
theme and meaning of the lyrics.
17. Foo Fighters – The Best Of You
• The music video for this song is largely dominated with clips of the band,
including the band playing on top of abandoned hospital, Linda Vista
Community Hospital. In addition, the clips shown of the band aren’t always
taken at the same time. For example, towards the beginning of the video shots
of the band performing are taken in the day when the weather is calm with
clear blue skies. Whereas towards the end of the video, the weather is more
dusky as if the sun were setting towards the end of the day. This links with the
time scale of the music video, the beginning of the song represents the
beginning of the day and the end of the song represents the ending of the day,
18. 50 Cent – In Da Club
• The next music video I shall look it will be 50 Cent’s music video “In Da
Club” due to the genre of the song being similar to the genre we shall be
looking at.
19. 50 Cent – In Da Club
• Phillip Atwell directed the music video on December 10–11, 2002. Almost all the film footage was used
in the video except for a scene where 50 Cent raps in a glass box.
• 50 Cent is introduced by hanging upside down from the roof of a gym. Atwell commented, "I think I
could have done better with it, but I really liked the way that it turned out".
• The video ends with the camera zooming out of the club to reveal a two-way mirror with Eminem and
Dr. Dre in white lab uniforms, observing 50 Cent and taking notes. Atwell stated that "seeing 50 with
Dr. Dre and Eminem having his back is as big a visual statement as it is a musical statement" and the
shot was significant because it made clear the club was inside the centre and not unrelated
performance footage.
20. 50 Cent – In Da Club
• Two shots which work well in my opinion is when shots are
shown of people in a club. This is because it not only links to
the title of the song, but visually the shots used are good. The
shot on the left is used as an establishing shot when 50 cent
first enters the club to show the audience what type of
environment 50 cent is entering. Whereas the shot on the
right is used to show 50 cent with girls and other rappers
having a good time.
21. 50 Cent – In Da Club
• Lots of shots of 50 cent performing are conveyed to the
audience. Due to 50 Cents large popularity as a performer
and rapper, audiences want to see 50 cent in his music
videos performing. A large variety of this video is
therefore based around showing 50 cent either in a club
rapping with friends, or rapping in what appears to be a
glass box. The music video works well for it’s genre as
with hip hop and rap it is important to show the artist
more than other genres of music.
