- These tests offer an overview of what the child knows. This information is useful to the school district, but not as helpful to parents or individual teachers because scores come back after the instructional year, for the most part, is over.
- They are used by teachers to inform instruction and provide information on what should be re-taught or which students need enrichment.
- In this workshop, we will cover an Overview of the North Carolina EOG testing program (reading, math and science), academic preparation for these tests, some test taking strategies, and allow you to take some practice tests (as time allows). We also will discuss the gateway years (grades 3, 5, and 8) and what happens at those grades.
- This is the testing window for this year. Last year, retest 1 was given to students who scored a level 2 on the EOG in reading and/or math. Parents had to opt in to retest students who scored a level 1 on the reading or math EOG. Previously, it was only administered at the gateway years (grades 3, 5, and 8). Reading will be given first (May 16) Then math inactive (May 17) Then math active (May 18) And science in grades 5 and 8 on May 19.
- Students can have up to 2 and ½ times the allotted time for the test. Students who have not completed the test in 115 minutes generally are moved to another room to finish. *note: students get a stretch break and are escorted to the bathroom. They can write in their test booklet and are given scratch paper. Los alumnos pueden disponer de hasta 4horas 50 minutos para terminar el examen. - Students and parents should have been taught in the classroom what they see on the test. Number and operations are foundational skills and those skills are built upon. Geometry is geometric concepts, shapes, measurements, etc.
- The school will provide the calculator for all students. The state provides recommended time limits. Depending on student accommodations, students can take additional time on the test. The calculator active part of the test must be administered before the calculator inactive portion of the test. The state provides recommended time limits for each test, but the math and science tests are not timed.
- Science test has been implemented for the past two years. The periodic table is provided for them by the school. Some activities to support students with the Science EOG is reviewing Latin and Greek roots and vocabulary, working with students on understanding landforms, weather, climate and animal/habitat relationships
- This test looks at critical thinking, analysis, and interpretation of data. Reading skills are critical for the science test. This test is also virtually untimed.
- Gateway years are 3, 5, and 8. The following information is the same for all three grade levels.
- Local promotion requirements include passing the grade and passing the reading and math EOGs. As well as required core courses at middle school. There is an appeals process that occurs after the restest and final retention decisions have been made. The first appeal must be to the school.
