There are five main types of dances: 1. Balletic dance tells a story through a logical sequence of episodes, involving characters and their emotions. 2. Dramatic dance concentrates on a happening or mood, possibly suggesting a story, through emotionally expressive movements requiring great effort. 3. Abstract dance takes thoughts and puts them into movement terms without necessarily telling a story or having the same interpretation for all viewers. 4. Ethnic dance suggests its cultural qualities through its light and melodic style of movement. 5. Comic dance uses exaggerated and unusual mimetic movements to achieve a comic or peculiar effect.
