             • 2GB capacity; minimal disk throughput required

             • Can slowly grow beyond 1GB; approx. 40MB for every 50K
               site collections
             • Transaction logs can be large; change recovery model from
               full to simple unless mirroring

            Database size = ((D × V) × S) + (10KB × (L + (V × D)))
             • D = the number of documents you expect to host
             • S = the average size of each document
             • L = the number of list items in the environment; start with 3 X

SQL Server Storage Best Practices

 Plan for performance in addition to capacity
 Search database and temp database are the most demanding for
 disk I/O. Search database is write intensive when crawling.
 When possible, place SQL transaction log and database files on
 physically separate disk pools
 Place transaction log files on RAID1/0 volumes/pools for high write
 performance and faster rebuilds
 Most of SharePoint data (content databases) can use RAID5
 volumes
 • RAID5 for more read intensive workloads
     (common, mainly publishing farms)
 • RAID1/0 for higher random write workloads
     (heavy collaboration, tempdb, search)
 • RAID 6 usually for higher availability with large amount of drives
     (Virtual Pools)

Virtual Machine Resource Allocation

 Virtual CPUs
 • Allocate the minimum requirement and adjust as needed; use HotAdd.
 • If overcommitting processors, monitor %RDY, %MLMTD, and %CSTP
 • Keep NUMA node size in mind with sizing virtual machines
 Virtual Memory
 • “Right-size” memory allocations for efficient use of host memory
 • Use vSphere 4.1 to take advantage of memory compression
 • If overcommitting memory, monitor SWAP /MB: r/s, w/s and MCTLSZ
 Storage
 • Understand I/O requirements for each application tier to avoid performance
     degradation due to under-provisioned storage
 • Use redundant paths to storage – Dual host-bus adapters or teamed network
     interface cards connected to separate switching infrastructures
 • Avoid partition misalignment by creating VMFS partitions from within the
     vSphere client – If creating VMFS from the CLI use fdisk to align

 • Yes, but for maximum efficiency, it depends on which storage role
 • Search Index component ? No
     • Highly changing, throw-away data

 • TempDB? Yes
     • The same blocks are re-used on disk and performance of TEMPDB directly affects
      SharePoint performance request - TempDB is used in every SharePoint request
 • Helps to handle unanticipated performance requirements

     Feature                    Description

                                VMware ESX®/VMware ESXi™ attempts to keep a virtual machine assigned to its home
     NUMA Support               NUMA-node. Because memory for the virtual machine is allocated from the home node
                                memory access is local and provides the best performance possible


     Transparent Page           Page sharing allows the hypervisor to reclaim the redundant copies of memory created

  7. Virtual and physical SharePoint web front-ends were tested to measure the difference in equally sized configurations. Results show that the difference between a physical and virtual Web front-end is very little even in high utilization scenarios.
  8. In the SQL server scale out test a more database intensive workload was run, generating more writes and searches. As in the web front-end tests the scaled out design was able to achieve higher throughput than the scaled up design.
  9. Virtualization adds new software layers and new types of interactions between the database and the hardware components.   11. The first step in modeling a production workload is to estimate the amount of activity you expect the users to generate. If you are deploying SharePoint for the first time in your organization, you must do a bit of educated guesswork on the expected user activity.If you’re upgrading from SharePoint 2007, you can analyze the existing environment to estimate the expected load in SharePoint 2010. To do this, you can either mine IIS logs or use information gathered by a third-party monitoring solution. Having current usage information greatly simplifies the capacity planning process and Microsoft provides the capability to use exiting IIS logs for load testing. To use an existing environment as a baseline requires the material listed in the slide from Microsoft:Whether you are deploying a new environment or upgrading from SharePoint 2007, you must define the expected user workload by using the criteria in the table below. Again, if you have an existing environment, this information can be gathered from the IIS logs; if you’re starting from scratch, you’ll need to estimate these values. Microsoft has published several case studies (available at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc261716.aspx) profiling different types of user load to help with your estimation process.

Microsoft has published a set of topologies ranging from small deployments to large enterprise farm implementations (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263044.aspx) that you can use as a starting point for your architecture. After you have chosen a topology, you can use the recommended server role requirements to plan resource allocation for your SharePoint virtual machines.
  13. Monitoring SharePoint doesn’t change when the application is virtualized. Use the same tools such as PerfMon, SharePoint Health Analyzer, and diagnostic logging. For monitoring SQL you can continue to use native tools. On top of monitoring SharePoint you can pinpoint bottlenecks by using vSphere monitoring such as esxtop and vSphere Client performance graphs.When trying to identify bottlenecks focus on resources that are queuing such as CPU or I/O versus relying on time-based measurements.

In addition, if using SQL Server database mirroring to provide availability for the Configuration database, Microsoft recommends that you use the full recovery model.Disk throughput requirements for the Configuration and Central Administration databases are minimal.Every SharePoint environment is unique; therefore, estimating the disk capacity and throughput required for content databases is not a precise activity. The Microsoft guidelines in this slide can help estimate the initial size of your deployment. Over time, as you monitor the production environment, you can easily adjust to changing disk capacity and throughput requirements using VMware features such as VMware Storage vMotion™.

  16. Planning a deployment of SharePoint virtual machines to vSphere is mostly about properly allocating compute resources to maximize application performance. As an example, this refers to Microsoft’s Departmental Collaboration Environment Technical Case Study (SharePoint Server 2010) at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff758649.aspx, which is a live, production workload that was documented to aid in the design process. The server role requirements from the case study are used to determine the virtual machine configurations and the appropriate hardware for the ESX/ESXi hosts. Then the initial deployment of the SharePoint virtual machines is mapped to the ESX/ESXi hosts to avoid overcommitment of host resources. To make this architecture work in a virtual environment, some important modifications were made to the case study:- The SQL Server hosting the content databases calls for 16 processor cores and 32GB of memory. Because this exceeds current vSphere limitations for vCPU allocation (maximum of 8 cups in vSphere 4.1), this large SQL Server was split into two SQL Server virtual machines with 8vCPUs each. The memory was left at 32GB, which is likely much more than is required for this workload, but can be adjusted after you have monitored for actual memory usage.- Some SQL Server configurations in this case study specify Direct Attached Storage (DAS) for the TempDB databases; however, placing all storage on the SAN enables key VMware features, such as vMotion, DRS, HA, and Storage vMotion. Links to original storage recommendations are included in the resource requirements table below.This case study is used for illustration purposes only to demonstrate resource allocation and mapping of SharePoint virtual machines to ESX/ESXi hosts. You should always plan your own environment using Microsoft Best Practices and case study examples. You can use the Requests Per Second Per User value to calculate the overall RPS that you must support. For example, 5,000 concurrent, “heavy” users each at 60 requests per hour would translate into .017 requests per second per user or 85 requests per second (RPS) for the system as a whole.
