Section 1: Clinic structure
1.1 CLINIC PROFILE:
Mutare city is the third largest city in Zimbabwe. It is situated in the eastern border of
Zimbabwe. It borders with Mozambique. It is 262 km from Harare the capital city of
Zimbabwe and 262km to the Indian Ocean. The population of the city is 184,590
according to 1992 census.
The city has nine health units. These include one infectious diseases hospital and two
maternity units.
For the purpose of support as a department we have chosen Sakubva Polyclinic for the
following reasons:
It is situated in the oldest, densely populated suburb.
This clinic provides treatment of minor ailments and provides Provider Initiated Testing
and Counselling of HIV infection.
All serious cases are referred to the provincial hospital.
The complex also houses the central pharmacy for all the clinics in the city. Most

important is that all patients on Arts collect their drugs from this central pharmacy. The
pharmacy is also responsible for procurement of all drugs including antiretrovirals
(ARVs). ARVs are offered free of charge through global fund.
1.2 HEALTH CARE SERVICES PROVIDED:
Tuberculosis Control Programme
All patients confirmed with TB disease are referred to this polyclinic from private and
public institutions including GPs for registration and notification to the Ministry of
Health. Patients are then sent to their local clinics for DOTS. At the end of 2 months
intensive phase, they come for review at this clinic and at the end of intensive phase.
This TB service covers the whole population of Mutare.
All our TB patients are put on ARV treatment if their CD4 cell count is below 350
CD cells after 2/52 of TB treatment.
OI/ART Programme
This clinic serves the whole population of Mutare. All public and private institutions
including GPs refer their infected patients to our programme for initiation of ARVs
and for follow up purposes. We have already 2000 patients on ARVs and we have
1200 on the waiting list. Lack of CD4 machine is the main course of bottle neck.
The public laboratory at the provincial hospital allows us to test 20 patients per week,
which means we recruit ± 20 patients per week.
This programme started in 2007

Total cumulative number of patients on 2nd line ARVs = 35
PMTCT Programme
We have an ANC maternity unit and a well baby clinic the same complex.
All pregnant mothers are offered provider Initiative testing counselling for HIV
infection. Those positive are then referred to OI/ART clinic for base line tests. If
their CD4 cell count is below 350 they are commenced on ARVs plus CT2. The
maternity unit services seven suburbs with a population of child bearing women.
All children born to HIV infected mothers are followed up at the well baby clinic
where they are registered put on CT2 at six weeks and tested at eighteen months since
we do not have to detect the HIV infection at six weeks.

Family Planning for 2009
The clinic offers different methods of planning mainly oral pills, injectables and
implants. This service is only offered to Sakubva residents only since other clinics
offer the same services.
Immunization of under Five-Year Olds
This programme services Sakubva residence only.
Total number of children served = 10709
Infection Control
All the equipment and linen which needs sterilization for use in maternity OPD etc
from all the clinics is done at this centre.
This centre has two old machines including one donated by the city of Harlem. They
are becoming very expensive to maintain because of the age and over use.

The Zimbabwe Network for Health (ZimHealth) in Europe is a non-governmental
association registered in Geneva, founded by Zimbabweans as a non-profit organisation.
It seeks to mobilise the support of Zimbabweans living in Europe, as well as other
interested individuals, agencies and development agencies to strengthen health-care
services in Zimbabwe.
ZimHealth seeks to make a difference in Zimbabwe primarily through the following:
 Raise funds directly from Zimbabweans in the Diaspora, in Zimbabwe and from
friends of Zimbabwe all over the world.
 Through a transparent and highly targeted system, procure and distribute drugs,
diagnostics, vaccines and other medical and non- medical commodities and essential
equipment to rehabilitate the health facilities in Zimbabwe.
 Inform and engage interested stakeholders about the needs, successes and impact of
the support to the health-care system in Zimbabwe.
