“Beginners’ Manual on Islam”

(The basic message of Islam)

• “Allah” : Arabic proper noun; name for God, it refers
to the One and Only, the Unique Creator, Lord
Sustainer of the Universe, Who Alone is God – there
is none besides Allah.
• No equivalent translation in non-Semitic language.



• “Muhammad s.a.a.w.” : Arabic name meaning “the
Praised One”; he is the Chosen, Unlettered Prophet,
the servant and Messenger of Allah, the Awaited
Seal of Prophethood after whom there will be no
more prophet sent.


Islam is built upon five
“Tell me about Islam” things:
Bear witness that there is
none deserving of worship
except Allah, and that
Muhammad is His servant
and Messenger.


And to establish Swolah
(the obligatory five daily
worship or specific
devotion).


And to pay the Zakah
(obligatory tax upon the
wealth).


And to make pilgrimage
(Hajj) to the House (Ka’ba
in Makkah) if you are able.


And to observe fasting
daily in the month of
Ramadhan.


.....“Tell me about iiman (Belief) iiman is that
(Faith/Belief)”
you:
Solemnly believe in Allah;
His angels;
His Books,
His Messengers;
In the Afterlife;
In the Decree, the good &
bad, all comes from (the
eternal knowledge of)
Allah;

........ “ Tell me about ‘Al- “Al-Ihsan” (excellence) is:
Ihsan’- (the Best or ... That you serve (worship)
Righteous conduct or Allah as though you see
Excellence)” Him, but if you do not see
Him, He (Allah) sees you.”


IIMAN ‘AMAL • IHSAN
[Islam]
Belief Submission Best or
Faith Obedience Righteous
Conviction Practice Conduct
Faith without obedience is meaningless; and obedience without Faith is
mere rituals and may even lead to hypocrisy.
Together, Faith and Obedience must lead to Righteousness with IHSAN
which essentially focus in our intention to sincerely serve Allah s.w.t.
Thus, in these three aspects can one be said to be true in his submission
to the Will of Allah (as Muslim).

THE FIRST ASPECT REQUIRED IN THE ATTESTATION TO
THE ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF ALLAH (TAUHEED)


(The Detailed Belief) “Al-iiman is that you:

 Solemnly believe in Allah;
 His angels;
 His Books,
 His Messengers;
 In the Afterlife;
 In the Decree, the good & bad, all comes
from (the eternal knowledge of) Allah
Most Exalted.”

MOST COMPASSIONATE,
MOST MERCIFUL

THE FOURTH ARTICLE OF FAITH IN ACKNOWLEDGING
THE ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF ALLAH (TAUHEED)


“And verily We have raised in every nation a messenger,
(proclaiming): ‘Serve Allah and shun false gods.’ Then some
of them (there were) whom Allah guided, and some of them
(there were) upon whom error had just hold.

Do but travel in the land and see the nature of the
consequence for the deniers!”
(Qur’an: An-Nahl: 16:36)


“And Allah will not mislead a people after He hath guided them,
in order that He may make clear to them what to fear (and
avoid)― for Allah hath knowledge of all things.”
(Qur’an: Taubah: 9:115)


“ Who receives guidance, receives it for his own benefit: who goes
astray doth so to his own loss: no bearer of burdens can bear the
burden of another: nor would We visit with Our Wrath until We had
sent an messenger (to give warning).

When We decide to destroy a population, We (first) send a definite
order to those among them who are given the good things of this life
and yet transgress; so that the word is proved true against them:
then We destroy them utterly.”

(Qur’an: al-Isra: 17:15-16)


Everyone of us has certain basic questions within
ourselves:

“Why have we been created?”

“What is the purpose of my being here in this world?”

“Why do people die?”

“Does it end here?”

“ Where will we go to after death?” ... etc.


Some may ignore these questions, yet they are still in
us and we will have to seek the Truth regarding this
matter – sooner or later.

Man’s limited knowledge of Reality, would not be
able to fathomed this mystery.


• Only Allah s.w.t. the Creator of every creation knows
the truth and Reality of our existence, the reason for
our being created and our destiny.

• Ever since Adam a.s., mankind has been promised by
Allah, guidance from Him. This is through His sending
of Prophets and Messengers from Him.


• We do acknowledge a category of people who
discover “Laws” in nature and regard them as reliable
and their findings learnt, applied and continue to be
taught.

• These are the people gifted with insights and inspired
with knowledge of the physical world. We called them
“Scientists”.


Yet there is another category of people, who came in
different place and time, yet all claimed to receive
Divine communication, asserted similar universal
message of God, of man’s moral obligation, of the life
in Hereafter etc.


• Yet there is another category of people, who came in
different place and time, yet all claimed to receive

in Hereafter etc.
• They delivered a message which transcend knowledge
of this physical world, inviting mankind towards Faith
in the One God. These are the “Prophets.”

• MUHAMMAD • He is “the Seal of Prophethood”,
“the Awaited and Chosen One”,
the “Leader of all the Messengers
of Allah.”


• SIDDIQ • TRUTHFUL
• AMANAH • TRUSTWORTHY
• TABLIGH • CONVEYING
• FATONAH • WISE


• MA’SUM – INFALLIBLE
Meaning “preserved, protected from sinning against
Allah”, although they all have human frailties and
weaknesses.

We reject all falsehood and slander against every prophets
of Allah, upholding their honour and dignity. Especially
those found in the Bible.


This because Allah s.w.t. said:



“And We made them (Prophets as) leaders, guiding (men) by
Our Command, and We sent them inspiration to do good
deeds, to establish regular prayers, and to practise regular
charity; and they constantly served Us (and Us only).”
(Qur’an: Anbiya’: 21: 73)



“No prophet could (ever) be false to his trust.”
(Qur’an: Aali’Imran: 3: 161)



“Now await in patience the command of thy Lord: for verily thou art
in our eyes (constantly watched and preserved): and celebrate the
praises of thy Lord the while thou standest forth.”
(Qur’an: Tur: 52: 48)



“And remember We took from the Prophets their Covenant:
and from thee: from Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, the
son of Mary: We took from them a solemn Covenant: That
(Allah) may question the (Custodians) of Truth concerning
the Truth they (were charged with): and He has prepared
for the Unbelievers a grievous Penalty.”
(Qur’an: Ahzab: 33: 7-8)



Their messengers said to them: "True, we are human like yourselves,
but Allah doth grant His grace to such of His servants as He pleases. It
is not for us to bring you an authority except as Allah permits.
(Qur’an: Ibrahim: 14: 11)



“Verily We have granted thee a manifest Victory: That Allah
may forgive thee thy faults of the past and those to follow;
fulfil His favour to thee; and guide thee on the Straight
Way;”
(Qur’an: Fathu: 48: 1-2)


MIRACLES
The term used for this in Islam is “khawariq al-aa-dah” –
meaning “breaking from the normal order.” So, term
“miracle” is general to include many kinds which can be
demonstrated by all kinds of people. Islam even warns
Muslims not to generalize as though all “miracles” are
therefore “mu’-jizat”.


MU’-JIZAT • Nabiy & Rasul (Prophets and
Messengers of Allah.)
Karomah • Awliyya (Saints).

Al-Ma-’unah • Mu’mineen (Believers)

Istidraj Others, especially the unbelievers
& those practicing sorcery.


MU’JIZAT

From the word “i’-jaz” meaning to “bring low” – refers to
extra-ordinary capability given to prophets by Allah, as
Signs or proof of their Prophet hood.

Usually, it would approximate and challenge what people
of the time had already regarded to be the most fantastic.


“Not a messenger did We send before thee without
this inspiration sent by Us to him: ‘that there is no god
but I; therefore worship and serve Me.’ ”
(Qur’an: Anbiya’: 21: 25)


“For We have never sent any Messenger except that
he should be heeded (obeyed) by Allah’s leave”.
(Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4: 64)


For We assuredly sent amongst every People a
messenger, (with the Command) "Serve Allah, and
eschew Evil": of the people were some whom Allah
guided, and some on whom Error became inevitably
(established).

So travel through the earth, and see what was the end
of those who denied (the Truth).”

(Qur’an: An-Nahlu: 16: 36)


“Likewise did We make for every Messenger an enemy,― evil
ones men and Jinns, inspiring each other with flowery discourses
by way of deception. If thy Lord had so willed, they would not
have done it: so leave them and their inventions alone.”
(Qur’an: An-’am: 6: 112)


THE PROPHET S.A.A.W. SAID:



“The likeness of me and the other Prophets is similar to that
of a man who built a house and perfectly decorated it except
for a space of one brick. The people used to go round this
house, wonder and say, ‘If only this missing brick were put
in!’
Thus, I am that brick and I am the Last of the Prophets.”

(Hadith agreed upon by Bukhary and Muslim)


“O people of the Book! now hath come unto you, making
(things) clear unto you, Our Messenger (Muhammad)
after the break in (the series of) Our Messengers, lest ye
should say: there came unto us no bringer of glad tidings
and no Warner (from evil): but now hath come unto you
a bringer of glad tidings and a Warner (from evil): and
Allah hath power over all things.”
(Qur’an: Maa-idah: 5: 15)


“ Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but
(he is) the Messenger of Allah, and the Seal of the
Prophets: and Allah has full knowledge of all things.”
(Qur’an: Ahzab: 33: 40)



“And I leave behind me for you all, for clarifying in your
affairs (of this religion), whosoever holdfast to them shall
never be led astray – (these are) the Book of Allah and
the Sunnah (Way or tradition) of His Messenger.”
(From Sermon reported by Ibnu Hisham in his “Seerah”)



“(Honour) My successors, may Allah s.w.t. be Merciful towards
them!.” He was asked: “Who are your successors O Messenger of
Allah?” And he said: “They are those who revive my Sunnah and
teaches them to the servants of Allah.”

(Hadith of the Prophet s.a.w.)

“ This day have I perfected your religion for (O Muhammad),
completed my favour upon you, and have chosen for you
Islam as your religion.”
(Qur’an: Ma-idah: 5: 3)


“ O ye who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger
and those charged with authority among you. If ye differ
in anything among yourselves, refer it to Allah and His
Messenger if ye do believe in Allah and the Last Day:
that is best, and most suitable for final determination.”
(Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4: 59)


“Now whenever Allah and His Messenger have decided
a matter, it is not for a believing man or a believing
woman to claim freedom of choice insofar as they
themselves are concerned; for he who (thus) rebels
against Allah and His Messenger has already, most
obviously, gone astray.”
(Qur’an: Ahzab: 33: 36)



“By Allah!(I swear), even if Musa is alive and present in
your midst, he can have no option except that he must
follow me (my teachings).”
(Hadith narrated by Jabir r.a.)


“And thus have We willed you to be a community of the
middle way (ummatan wasotan) [i.e. justly balanced], so
that [with your lives] you might bear witness to the truth
before all mankind (shuhadaa-a ‘alan-naas) , and the
Messenger as a witness over you.“
(Qur’an: Baqarah 2:143)


“All who obey Allah and the Messenger are in the company of
those on whom is the Grace of Allah― of the Prophets (who
teach) the sincere (lovers of Truth), the witnesses (who testify),
and the Righteous (who do good): ah! How a beautiful
fellowship!
Such is the Bounty from Allah: and sufficient is it that Allah
knows all.”
(Qur’an: an-Nisa: 4: 69-70)


“O Allah, bless, grant peace and blessings to our master
Muhammad, Your Prophet and Messenger, and to our
master Ibrahim, Your friend and intimate friend, and to
our master Musa, Your close friend to whom You spoke,
and our master 'Isa, Your Ruh and Word, and to all Your
angels, Messengers, Prophets .....


... the best of Your creation, Your pure ones, elite and
awliya' from the people of Your earth and heaven.

May Allah bless our master Muhammad in quantity as
great as His creation, His good pleasure, the weight of
His Throne, and the ink of His words as he deserves .....


..... and whenever those who remember mention him and
those who neglect his mention neglect it, and bless the
people of his House and his pure family, and grant
them peace.
