“Beginners’ Manual on Islam”

(The basic message of Islam)

“Allah” : Arabic proper noun; name for God, it refers
to the One and Only, the Unique Creator, Lord
Sustainer of the Universe, Who Alone is God – there is
none besides Allah.
No equivalent translation in non-Semitic language.



“Muhammad s.a.a.w.” : Arabic name meaning “the
Praised One”; he is the Chosen, Unlettered Prophet,
the servant and Messenger of Allah, the Awaited
Seal of Prophethood after whom there will be no
more prophet sent.


“Tell me about Islam”


Islam is built upon five
things:
Bear witness that there is
none deserving of worship
except Allah, and that
Muhammad is His servant
and Messenger.

And to establish Swolah

devotion).

And to pay the Zakah
(obligatory tax upon the

And to make pilgrimage

Solemnly believe in Allah;
His angels;
His Books,
His Messengers;
In the Afterlife;

Righteous conduct or
Excellence)”


“Al-Ihsan” (excellence) is:
... That you serve (worship)
Allah as though you see
Him, but if you do not see
Him, He (Allah) sees you.”

Faith without obedience is meaningless; and obedience without Faith is
mere rituals and may even lead to hypocrisy.
Together, Faith and Obedience must lead to Righteousness with IHSAN
which essentially focus in our intention to sincerely serve Allah s.w.t.
Thus, in these three aspects can one be said to be true in his submission
to the Will of Allah (as Muslim).

THE FIRST ASPECT REQUIRED IN THE ATTESTATION TO
THE ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF ALLAH (TAU HEED)



IIMAN is “Belief or Faith” to something beyond sense
perception, termed as “

- al-ghayb” meaning “the

unseen”.


It is derived from the root word “

” which also means

“safety, peace, security, protection”


It denote: “certainty of the ultimate truth”, adherence to it
instils sense of “security in him” from doubts, uncertainty,
restlessness etc.




Yet from Islamic perspective “iiman” cannot be by mere blind
acceptance devoid of proof or substantiation i.e. Believe or
faith must be with knowledge.




"And do not follow (pursue) anything of which thou
hast no knowledge: verily (thy) hearing and sight

THE SIXTH ARTICLE OF FAITH IN ACKNOWLEDGING
THE ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF ALLAH (TAUHEED)

“No calamity befalls save by Allah's leave (permission). And
whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart. And Allah is
Knower of all things.
Obey Allah and obey His messenger; but if ye turn away, then the
duty of Our messenger is only to convey (the message) plainly.
Allah! There is no God save Him. In Allah, therefore, let believers
put their trust.”
(Qur’an: Taghabun: 64: 11-13)

“ Allah! There is no God save Him, the Alive, the Eternal. Neither
slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. Unto Him belongs
whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth.
Who is he that intercedes with Him save by His leave? He
knows that which is in front of them and that which is behind
them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge save
what He will. His throne includes the heavens and the earth,
and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime,
the Tremendous.”

What is “ikhtiyar”

?

It is derived from the root word “khayr”

“ Verily! We create man from a drop of mingled sperm, in
order to test him; so We gave him (gifts of) hearing,
sight. Verily! We have shown him the Way, whether he be
grateful or ungrateful i.e. disbelieving (rests on his will).”
(Qur’an: Al-Insan:76: 2-3)

“ Then when (Solomon) saw it (the throne miraculously) placed
firmly before him, he said: This is by the grace of my Lord!
― to test me whether I am grateful, or ungrateful!
( HAA-DZA MIN – FADW-LI – ROB-BEE.
LI-YAB-LU-WA-NEE A -ASH-KURU – AM – AK-FUR ) .
And if any is grateful truly his gratitude is (a gain) for his
own soul; but if any is ungrateful, truly my Lord is Free of All
Needs, Supreme in Honour!

change their inner selves;”

which He has graced a people unless they change their inner

might try you by means of what He has bestowed upon you .
Verily, thy Sustainer is swift in retribution: yet, behold, He is

know with absolute certainty that this thing will occur?

“Can we change our current condition,
to ensure a better future in our destiny?”

Of course we can, because Allah SWT has allowed us
(nay, expects us) to continue to change for the better,
to improve.

Allah will assist the change, but He will not change
your condition unless you begin to change it

“But as for those who strive hard in Our cause -We shall
most certainly guide them onto paths that lead unto Us:
for, behold, Allah is indeed with the doers of good.”

they will be left to themselves, and will not be put to a
test? Yea, indeed, we did test those who lived before
them; and so too, [shall be tested those Muslims who is
now living and] most certainly will He mark out those

requires proof through tests, because believers would be
rewarded with honour and exaltation.

ye show ingratitude, truly My punishment is terrible indeed.
(Qur’an: Ibrahim:14: 7)

fulfilled their obligations (with their lives), and some of them
are still waiting (for its fulfillment) without having changed
[their resolve] in the least.”
(Qur’an: al-Ahzab: 33: 23)

“ Say: ‘Nothing will happen to us except what Allah has decreed
for us: He is our protector’: and on Allah let the Believers put
their trust.”
(Qur’an: Taubah: 9: 51)

“ If Allah do touch thee with hurt, there is none can remove
it but He: if He do design some benefit for thee, there is
none can keep back His favour: He causeth it to reach
whomsoever of His servants He pleaseth. And He is the
Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

This is what we may understand “Qadha’” to mean : the
unveiling or the revealing of Allah’s executing His foreknowledge (Decree) to us.

Allah (Qadr)”.

already predestined - to do so would still be only mere

responsibility, because there are free-will which we are
given to exercise therein.

yet what is destined to occur in this life, may not always be
pleasant and good.

Therefore, it is foolish to say: “Well if things is going

“Swobr” – ‘patience perseverance’; if instilled in us then
whatever the outcome in life’s trial tribulation would
not deter nor cause us to lose hope. There would always
be positive optimism, ever determined, knowing that Allah
knows all that we are going through and:

(COURAGE)
Knowing that when Allah SWT. permits something to
happen, only then can it happen. If He does not permit it,
then it can never happen.

Thus the actual future outcome rests only with Allah,
although we may speculate with our knowledge of cause
and effect. Yet, our knowledge is limited – whereas Allah’s
knowledge encompass all.
This instils in us courage to face the future.

(TRUST)
Believe in Qadha’ Qadr requires a Muslim to place trust
completely in Allah (after exhausting all resolve and ikhtiyar).
Trust in Allah make us deserving of his Love:

put your Trust in Allah for Allah
loves those who put their Trust in Him”
(Qur’an: Aali ’Imran: 3: 159)

HUSNUZ-DZON
(GOOD OPINION TOWARDS ALLAH)
Having only good opinion of Allah marks a true Believer.
Thus the ‘good and the bad’ are seen only as a temporary
gifts or affliction – decided by One Who is Compassionate,
Merciful and Wise.

Those who holds to “good opinion of Allah and His
Decree”, develops their Nafs (Soul) to become Tranquil

DU’A TAUGHT BY ALLAH:

ROB-BA-NAA – ‘A-LAI-KA – TA-WAK-KAL-NAA
WA-ILAI-KA – ANAB-NAA – WA - I-LAI - KAL – MA-SWEER

Our Lord! in Thee do we trust, and to Thee do we turn in
repentance: to Thee is (our) final Goal.”

TAJ-’AL-NAA – FIT-NA-TAN –LIL-QOW-MIZZO-LI-MEEN – WA-NAJ-JI-NAA – BI-ROH-MA-TI-KA
– MINAL – QOW-MIL -KAA-FI-REEN
In Allah do we put our trust. Our Lord! make us not a trial for those
who practise oppression; And deliver us by Thy Mercy from those
who reject (Thee).

IN – NA – SEE – NAA – AU – AKH – TWA’ – NAA

Our Lord! condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; .

ISW – RAN – KA –MAA – HAMAL –TA-HU –
‘ALAL-LA-DZEE – NA –MINQ – QOB – LI - NAA
Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which Thou didst lay on those before
us



ROB-BA-NAA – WA – LAA – TU – HAM – MIL – NAA
MAA – LAA – TWAA – QO – TA – LA – NAA - BIH

Our Lord! lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear.



WA’ – FU – ‘AN – NAA – WAGH – FIR – LA – NAA
WAR – HAM – NAA – AN – TA – MAU – LAA – NAA
FAN – SWUR – NAA – ‘ALAL – QAU – MIL – KAA – FI -REEN
Blot out our sins and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou
art our Protector; help us against those who stand against faith.


ALLAA-HUM-MA HA-BIBI-LAI -NAL – II - MAN

O Allah! Endear love in our hearts with the True Faith ( al- iiman)”

ornament) in our hearts”

“And make us hateful of KUFR (every forms of unbelief), FUSUUQ (every wickedness) and ISw-YAAN (rebelliousness
against truth goodness)”

“And make us to amongst those who are RAA-SHI-DUUN (the
Rightly Guided)”

Our Lord! let not our hearts deviate now after Thou hast guided us,
but grant us mercy from Thee: for Thou art the Grantor of bounties
without measure.”

“Our Lord! pour out on us patience and constancy,
and Take our souls unto Thee
as Muslims (who bow to Thy will)!

WA - DZUR-RI- YAA -TI-NAA – QUR-RO—TA – A’ – YU-NIN
WAJ- ‘AL – NAA – LIL – MUT-TA-QEE-NA – IMAA -MA
Our Lord! Grant unto us wives (mates) and offspring who will be the
comfort of our eyes and give us (the grace) to lead the righteous.”



ROB-BA-NAA – AA-TI-NAA – FID-DUN-YAA – HA-SA-NA-TAN –
WA- FIL – AA-KHI-RA-TI - HA-SA-NA-TAN
WA-QI-NAA - ‘A-DZAA-BAN-NAA-R
“Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter
and save us from the torment of the fire!


“(May) Allah grant His Reward upon Muhammad, salutations of Allah
and Peace be upon him and his family, in accordance with what he
deserves (in Allah’s knowledge estimation).”


And salutations of Allah and Peace be upon our Leader
Muhammad, and upon His household and Companions .
And all the Praises is for Allah,
Lord Sustainer of all the worlds.


”Glory to thy Lord the Lord, of Honour and Power! (He is free) from
what they ascribe (to Him)! And Peace on the Messengers! And praise
to Allah, the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds.”
(Qur’an : Saffat: 37 : 180-182)
