Arabic (plural) of Adab : meanings – “good breeding, decency,

nurture, good manners, refinement, cultured, decorum, courteous,
etiquette, propriety, social grace, to educate, discipline, the
humanities, etc.” sense of proportion and knowledge of their rightful
place in the order of things, the absence of which indicates injustice

RECAP PREVIOUS LESSON

By retracing our life, we start with understanding
our basic nature as a human being - having
inherent powers and their potentialities to be
developed.



In our relationship regarding our Education – we
are to encounter, i.e. assisted by our educators with what is referred to as, “knowledge”.



Yet, we are born helpless and have to be cared,
nurtured, to be inculcated with discipline, taught and
developed by a Murabbi’ (EDUCATOR) – the first of
whom are our PARENTS.

Faith without obedience is meaningless; and obedience without Faith is
mere rituals and may even lead to hypocrisy.
Together, Faith and Obedience must lead to Righteousness with IHSAN
which essentially focus in our intention to sincerely serve Allah s.w.t.
Thus, in these three aspects can one be said to be true in his submission
to the Will of Allah (as Muslim).

Definition of iiman :

“Utterance with the tongue (speech);
affirmation with the heart/mind (conviction);
and manifesting through practice (actions).”

ISTIGHFAR


After TAUBAT (Repentance), our Adab towards Allah is ISTIGHFAR
(Seeking the forgiveness of Allah).
This reminds us that seeking Allah’s forgiveness must constantly
be done – not occasionally. Those who strive for TAQWA must
become aware of his own shortcomings, ever aware of the deception
by our NAFS (Self) and of mankind’s avowed enemy, satan.
The SUNNAH already include the ISTIGHFAR to be invoked in many
instances in our daily life.
With ISTIGHFAR, we seek to eradicate our arrogance, obstinacy
and conceit, for it requires introspection of our own Self and depth of
all our inner-secrets.

Get into groupings (not more than 8) and do
a brief self-introduction to each other in this new
group.
Reflect our daily life as Muslims, the number of
times (as well as the occasions, circumstances,
place, etc) where ISTIGHFAR is recited.

“Can I get to know
you ? What have
we learnt?”

It would even be better if you can quote the
actual SUNNAH recitations, which has ISTIGHFAR.
HALAQAH

You are given only 30 minutes to complete this assignment

“(Honour) My successors, may Allah s.w.t. be Merciful towards them!.”
He was asked: “Who are your successors O Messenger of Allah?” And he
said: “They are those who revive my Sunnah and teaches them to the
servants of Allah.”
(Hadith of the Prophet s.a.w.)

Anytime throughout the day and night.
When we commit sins or mistakes.
When in MAJLIS, before leaving.
During SAHUR time.
Before going to sleep.
When exiting the toilet.


At the beginning or in the middle of doing WUDHU’ .
In the DU’A after ablution (WUDHU’).
When the sun is setting.
In the Dzikr when entering and exiting the MASJID (mosque)


In one of IFTITAH DU’A at beginning of SWOLAH.
One of recitations, while in RUKU’.
One of recitations, while in SUJUD.
In DU’A recitation, while sitting between the two SAJDAH.
DU’A recitation, while sitting after TASHAHHUD before SALAM.
Immediately after ending the SWOLAH with SALAM.
In daily AWRAD which include DU’A seeking forgiveness for our
parents, teachers, family and all believers.

One of the recitation in JANAZAH SWOLAH, for oneself as well as
for the deceased. Including the DU’A after the burial and gravesite.
When meeting acquaintance, to ask each to make ISTIGHFAR (seek
Allah’s forgiveness) for one another.
During the eclipse.
While in as well as at end of sermon (KHUTBAH) or lecture.
Whenever feeling sad or depress.
When supplicating for rain.

Defined as : “To submit with humility, one’s self, heart and thoughts
towards Allah while seeking His forgiveness for one’s sins and
error.”
Therefore it is not merely the verbalizing of the Arabic phrase:

But must be accompanied with awareness, the sincere and honest
admission accompanied with remorse, shame and regret for the
wrong done; having the fear of Allah’s punishment but tampered
with Hope of His Mercy and promise of forgiveness. It is linked to
our knowledge (‘ILM) as well as Faith (IIMAN).

The two (Adam and Hawa) replied: "O our Sustainer!
We have sinned against ourselves -and unless Thou
grant us forgiveness and bestow Thy mercy upon us,
we shall most certainly be lost!“
(Qur’an: A’-raf: 7: 23)


“Verily, when a believer commits a sin, a dark spot will
begin to stain his heart. And when he repents, and
ceases from committing it, and seek forgiveness, then
his heart will be cleanse from the black stain. But if he
increases in sinning, then so will the black stain
increases, until it covers his entire heart. This then is
the ‘corrosion’ which Allah reminded in His Book:
“Nay, but their hearts are corroded (Q: 83: 14)”
(Hadith reported by Ibnu Majah and Tirmidzi)


Say [O Prophet]: "If you love Allah, follow me, [and]
Allah will love you and (YAGHFIRU) forgive you your
sins; for Allah is much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace.“
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 31)


“Hence, remain thou patient in adversity - for, verily,
Allah’s promise always comes true - and (ISTIGHFAR)
ask forgiveness for thy sins, and extol thy Sustainer’s
glory and praise by night and by day.”
(Qur’an: Ghafir: 40: 55)

Say: "Shall I tell you of better things than those [earthly
joys]? For those having the TAQWA (consciousness and
fear Allah’s wrath) there are, with their Sustainer,
gardens through which running waters flow, therein to
abide, and spouses pure, and Allah's goodly
acceptance." And Allah sees all that is in [the hearts of]
His servants”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 15)


Those who say, "O our Sustainer! Behold, we believe
[in Thee]; forgive us, then, our sins, and keep us safe
from suffering through the fire" -: those who are
patient in adversity, and true to their word, and truly
devout, and who spend [in Allah's way], and pray for
forgiveness from their innermost hearts.”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 16-17)


"O our Sustainer! Thou hast not created [aught of] this
without meaning and purpose. Limitless art Thou in Thy
glory! Keep us safe, then, from suffering through fire!
"O our Sustainer! Whomsoever Thou shalt commit to
the fire, him, verily, wilt Thou have brought to disgrace
[in this world]; and such evildoers will have none to
succour them. “


"O our Sustainer! Behold, we heard a voice call [us] unto
faith, `Believe in your Sustainer!' - and so we came to believe.
O our Sustainer! Forgive us, then, our sins, and efface our bad
deeds; and let us die the death of the truly virtuous! “
And, O our Sustainer, grant us that which Thou hast promised
us through Thy apostles, and disgrace us not on Resurrection
Day! Verily, Thou never failest to fulfil Thy promise!"”


"Partake of the good things which We have provided
for you as sustenance, but do not transgress therein
the bounds of equity lest My condemnation fall upon
you: for, he upon whom My condemnation falls has
indeed thrown himself into utter ruin! Yet withal,
behold, I forgive all sins unto any who repents and
attains to faith and does righteous deeds, and
thereafter keeps to the right path.”
(Qur’an: TaHa: 20: 81-82)


ALLAHUMMA INNI AS-ALUKA - YA ALLAAH - BI -AN-NAKAL – WAAHIDUL - AHADUS-SwO-MADUL-LADZI, LAM YA-LID WA-LAM YUULAD, WA-LAM YAKUN-LAHU KU-FUAN AHAD, AN TAGH-FI-RAL-LIDZU-NUU-BI – IN-NAKA – ANTAL – GHA-FUUR-RUR – RO-HEEM

O Allah! I ask You, O Allah, You are ‘the One, the Only,
the Absolute and Eternal (Self Sufficient Master),
Who does not beget nor was begotten and
none is equal to Him’
Forgive me my sins, surely you are Oft-Forgiving, Most
Merciful
(Hadith reported by Abu Dawud, an Nasa'i, ibn Majah, Tirmidzi )


ALLAA-HUM-MAJ – ‘AL-NEE – MINAL-LADZEE-NA – IDZAA – AHSANUS –TAB – SHA-RUU – WA – IDZAA – ASAA-US – TAGH-FA-RUU
O Allah! make me among those who, when they commit an act of
virtue, rejoice; and when they commit a mistake, seek forgiveness
(Hadith reported by Ibn Majah)


“Ask your Sustainer to forgive you your sins, and then
turn towards Him in repentance - [whereupon] He will
grant you a goodly enjoyment of life [in this world]
until a term set [by Him is fulfilled]; and [in the life to
come] He will bestow upon everyone possessed of
merit [a full reward for] his merit. But if you turn away,
then, verily, I dread for you the suffering [which is
bound to befall you] on that awesome Day.”
(Qur’an: Hud: 11: 3)

“Whoever invoke much ISTIGHFAR (seeking from Allah,
forgiveness) , Allah will grant him relief from every
difficulty, expand for him every constrained, and provide
RIZQ (means of livelihood) from unexpected sources.”
(Hadith reported by Abu Daud)

“Verily Allah will raise the ranks of His servant to a high degree in
Paradise that he will ask from Allah, ‘O Lord, from where (how)
was I given this?. Then Allah will say: This rank (is given) due to
ISTIGHFAR -the seeking of forgiveness made for you by your
children.”
(Hadith reported by Ahmad)

AS-TAGH- - FIRUL – LAA - HAL – A-ZEEM, AL – LA-DZII
LAA – ILAA-HA – IL-LA – HU - WAL - HAI-YUL
QAI – YUU –M – WA-TUU-BUU - ILAYH

“I seek the forgiveness of Allah, the Most Esteemed,
Whom there is no god except Him, He is the Ever-Living,
the Self-subsisting, and to Him I turn in repentance,”


RAB-BIGH-FIR - LEE – WATUB – ‘ALAY,
IN-NAKA – AN-TAT - TAW-WAA-BUL- GHA-FOOR

“O my Lord, forgive me and turn towards me
(to accept my repentance). Verily You are
The Oft-Returning. The Oft-Forgiving.”


“O Allah, I have committed much sins against You, and
(as well as) against them who are Your creations.
Therefore as to the sins committed towards You I beg
Forgiveness from You; and as to the sins I committed
towards Your creations, I beseech You to be my
Guarantor on my behalf (against their claims).
And enrich me (with merits) from Your Mercy, O (Allah,
You are) Most Merciful of those who show Mercy.”


“O Allah, You are my Lord, none has the right to be
worshipped except You, You created me and I am Your
servant and I abide to Your covenant and promise as
best I can, I take refuge in You from the evil of which I
have committed. I acknowledge Your favor upon me
and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for verily
none can forgive sin except You.”


O Allah! Forgive me from those sins, which
destroy the safeguard (Your protection from
wrongdoing).


bring down (Your) retributions.


change Grace (prosperity and happiness into
afflictions and sorrows).


intercept (restrain) my Du’a (supplication from
being answered by You).


bring down calamities (afflictions and woes).


diminish (cut-off) the Hope (for Your Mercy).


O Allah! Forgive me every sins I have
committed and every error I have made.


TO BE CONTINUED -


”All praise is due to Allah, who has guided us unto this;
for we would certainly not have found the right path
unless Allah had guided us!”

And salutations of Allah and Peace be upon the
Messenger of Allah and upon His household
and Companions .

"O our Sustainer! Thou hast not created [aught of] this

"O our Sustainer! Whomsoever Thou shalt commit to the fire,
him, verily, wilt Thou have brought to disgrace [in this world];

`Believe in your Sustainer!' - and so we came to believe.

"And, O our Sustainer, grant us that which Thou hast promised us

O Allah! We beseech Your help to make us to remember
and be grateful towards You, and make us serve
(worship) You in the best way.


78

“O my Sustainer (Lord)! ! Inspire me so that I may forever be grateful
for those blessings of Thine with which Thou hast graced me and my
parents, and that I may do what is right [in a manner] that will
please Thee; and include me, by Thy grace, among Thy righteous
servants!”

(Qur’an: Naml: 27: 19)

“O my Sustainer (Lord)! Inspire me so that I may forever
be grateful for those blessings of Thine with which
Thou hast graced me and my parents, and that I may
do what is right [in a manner] that will meet with Thy
goodly acceptance; and grant me righteousness in my
offspring [as well]. Verily, unto Thee have I turned in
repentance: for, verily, I am of those who have
surrendered themselves unto Thee!””
(Qur’an: Ahqaf: 46: 15)

"Our Lord! Make of us Muslims bowing to Thy (Will) and of our
progeny a people Muslim bowing to Thy (Will) and show us our
places for the celebration of (due) rites; and turn unto us (in
Mercy); for Thou art the Oft-Returning Most-Merciful.
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 128)

“Our Lord ! Grant that our spouses and our offspring be a joy to
our eyes, and cause us to be foremost amongst those who are
conscious of Thee! (as ‘mut-taqqin’).”
(Qur’an : al-Furqan: 25: 74)

"Our Lord! pour out constancy on us and make our steps firm;
Help us against those that reject faith."
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2:250)

“Our Lord ! Let not our hearts swerve from the truth after You
have guided us; and bestow upon us the gift of Thy Grace
(Mercy): verily, You are the (true) giver of Gifts (bestowals).”
(Qur’an : Aali ‘Imran : 3 : 8)

“Our Lord ! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; Our
Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on
those before us : Our Lord ! Lay not on us a burden greater
than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, And grant
us forgiveness, Have Mercy on us. You are our protector :
Help us against the unbelievers.”
(Qur’an : al-Baqarah : 286)


87

We shield ourselves with (Allah’s protection, He
Who is) (DZIL-’IZ-ZA-TIL – JA-BA-RUU-T) the
Possessor of Honour and the Irresistible Power,

And we are holding fast with the (ROB-BIL-MA-LAKUUT) Lord Sustainer of the whole Unseen Realm,


89

And we put our trust upon (Allah, Who is)
the ever Alive (AL-HAY-YU),
Who never dies (LAA-YA-MUUT),

O Allah! Remove from us this calamity
(WABAA’)


91

Save us from the evil effect (harm) and destruction


92

Keep us away from diseases, epidemic
and disaster (catastrophe).


93

With Your Gentleness (Subtleness),
O You Who is Most Subtle (YAA-LATIFF),
O You Who is More Aware (YAA-KHA-BIIR).

Verily, over all things You have Power
(to will anything)


95

"Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter
and save us from the torment of the fire!"
(Qur’an : al-Baqarah: 2 : 201)

“(May) Allah grant His Reward upon Muhammad, salutations
of Allah and Peace be upon him and his family, in accordance
with what he deserves (in Allah’s knowledge & estimation).”


97

And salutations of Allah and Peace be
upon our Leader Muhammad, and upon
His household and Companions .


98

”Glory to thy Lord the Lord, of Honour and Power! (He is free) from
what they ascribe (to Him)! And Peace on the Messengers! And
praise to Allah, the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds.”
(Qur’an : Saffat: 37 : 180-182)

“Grant us (these our supplication),
by Your Mercy, (O Allah, You are) the
Most Merciful of those who show Mercy!”
