User Experience “Outside the Square”
This is the square. This is where we spend A LOT of our time.
The square is on our desktop computers…
The square is on our mobile phones…
The square is on our laptops…
And now we even have giant squares we can play with using gestures…
In future we’ll be able to do even cooler stuff with the square…
But the square is a trap for the User Experience
Too often, ALL our focus is on the square…
We observe users using the square… On their desktop computers…
On their laptops…
On their mobile phones…
And, we are very very good at noticing what’s wrong with the square…
LOOK! The square has a problem!
And we hone in on the issue using our powers of observation, data and statistics…
We give our expert advice…
You need to change this icon!
Alert your users!
Give feedback!
And then we fix it. And test it again. And most of the time it works MUCH better.
But sometimes, despite all our best efforts, fixing the square doesn’t fix the problem!
And the user is STILL unhappy.
What’s going on?
You’re sure you’d fixed that damned square!
Hmmm… What would happen, if we took the square…?
And the user…?
And got rid of the square?
YES! That’s much better already! Look at how happy the user is now!
Now, let’s talk about the REAL problem…
You see, the square was just one small part of the problem. Maybe the square is there to help a business process customer orders… … but look at all these people and all these other things happening around the square! What’s going on here?
It’s time we all freed UX from that friggin square.
Not sure what to do now?
Here’s an idea…
Start thinking CIRCLES. Looks enticing! Let’s go inside…
Hello, what’s this?
More circles! Who are these people? What do they do? How are they impacting on the user experience? You need to find out!
(For example)
But there must be more to it than that?
What’s outside the circle?
More circles! Who are these people? They work OUTSIDE the organisation, but are also part of the organisation. What do they do? How are they impacting on the user experience? You need to find out! You might be the ONLY person who can see THE BIG PICTURE.
(For example)
And don’t forget – you’re part of the picture…
You have special powers…
… to draw all the circles together…
And to get everyone working together to create an experience which works for the user at EVERY touch-point.
