Adjective A word to modify or describe a noun Example: House (noun) Big house (house has a characteristic  big) Green house (house has a characteristic  green) Big green house (house has 2 characteristics  big and green) Man (noun) Small man (man has a characteristic  small) Handsome man (man has a characteristic  handsome) Small handsome man (man has 2 characteristics  small & handome) The examples above show that a noun can be given some type of characteristic; the noun is modified, the modification word is an adjective

5. French adjective In English, adjectives are usually placed before the noun Small house, great man, beautiful woman, big apartment, slow car, tall building, difficult course, temperamental child, talkative friend, etc. In French, most adjectives are placed AFTER the noun “house green”, “food delicious”, “girlfriend crazy” etc. when in English it should mean “green house”, “delicious food” and “crazy friend” respectively But, shouldn’t be difficult to remember because in Malay, adjectives are usually placed after the noun “rumahhijau”, “makanansedap”, “temanwanitagila” …

Agreement French adjective differs from English such that: Agree in gender (masculine / feminine) Agree in number (singular / plural) If the noun is singular masculine, the adjective used should also be ‘singular masculine’ If the noun is plural masculine, the adjective used should also be ‘plural masculine’ If the noun is singular feminine, the adjective used should also be ‘singular feminine’ If the noun is plural feminine, the adjective used should also be ‘plural feminine’

Adjectives placed BEFORE the noun Although most French adjectives are placed after the noun, there are some which are placed IN FRONT of the noun The adjectives that are placed before the noun are those under these categories: Beauty Age Good / bad Size The rules of gender and number still hold
