Structure and function in living things STUDY GUIDE With your guide: Sammy cell!
CELLS and structures Cells are the building blocks of all living things. A living thing, or organism, has cells of different sizes and shapes. There are three basic parts of all plant and animal cells: ,[object Object]
Cytoplasm
And the nucleus2
What’s the difference? Animal cells Plant cells How are animal and plant cells different? Fill in the boxes above with your answers. 3
Different cells, different functions As you already know, different cells perform different jobs… …But did you know cells enjoy teamwork???? Cells must work together in groups to perform their job. The diagram below should help: Groups of organs working together Groups of tissues Groups of similar cells 4
“plant”ing an idea! Plants come in all shapes and sizes. In fact, there are over 275,000 species of plants! Plants are different than animals though because plants can make their own food. Plants cannot move from place to place like animals can. Vascular plants nonVascular plants 5
Let’s talk vertebrates Vertebrates are all animals with backbones. These animals have skeletons inside their bodies to give them shape. There are 5 groups of vertebrate animals. Remember… My Best Friend Always Reads! Can you name the 5 groups of vertebrate animals? 6
mammals Mammals… are warm blooded (have a constant body temperature) have fur or hair give birth to their young and produce milk for their young to eat What features classify humans as mammals? 7
It’s a bird! it’s a plane!… no really it’s a bird Birds… are warm-blooded have feathers lay eggs and most can fly 8
Something’s fishy! Fish… live in water. have gills to breathe underwater. are cold-blooded. Animals that are cold-blooded cannot maintain a constant body temperature. 9
