First:
The Linux desktop ain't dead:
● City of Munich, Spain, Brazil, many others
● More and more blogs, reports and articles in
renowned non-tech papers report „I installed
Linux and it simply worked.“

A community
not quite unityed...
● A fierce debate about Linux desktops is going
on: KDE, Gnome, Unity, LXDE, Cinnamon →
Where is this going?
● KDE4: Still Problems with Akonadi backend
● Gnome 3: Lots of critizism
● Ubuntu Unity: Not accepted by power users

Linus' Views …
● Linus Torvalds on Gnome 3:
„If you treat your users like idiots, only idiots
will use your software.“
● Linus Torvalds on the Linux Desktop:
„The whole 'ubiquitous web browser' thing has
made that kind of consumer play be more
realistic.“
● And for sure he loves NVidia

Is there a Solution?
● In fact, there is a desktop technology offering
huge possibilities.
● It can do video and all the stuff that Flash can,
but it doesn't suck your battery empty.
● It supports both desktop and other applications,
no matter if on- or offline
● It's free, standardized and runs on all operating
systems we know today, yes even on Apple's!

Some Technology Bingo
● Video integration,
● Web sockets,
● Canvas,
● Microdata,
● I believe there is much more yet to come in ...
→ HTML 5

HTML 5 will change the desktop
Innovative projects show the power of HTML 5:
● Remote desktop access via VNC and RDP
● Remote (wifi) access to your Smartphone
● Structured data within websites
● Open/Libre Office and other (today still pure
desktop) apps can be converted live to HTML 5
● No client needed, a simple browser will do.

What about industry support?
● Microsoft → Windows 8 (This is actually when
the Internet Explorer will „learn“ HTML 5)
● Android (what else?)
● Even Apple (Jobs has always favored HTML 5
over the CPU- and battery consuming Flash)
● Tizen (Maemo/Meego successor), Boot2Gecko
(Mozilla)
● And also: BlackBerry RIM

GTK3-library that
„redirects“ any output
Broadway
of Linux desktop
programs to HTML 5.
Still in a very early
stage, but Libre Office
already works, on Suse
12.1. This keynote is
the first fully browser-
independent presen-
tation.
The Libre Office
„Weboffice“ team is
developing and
continuously
improving.

A little live demo
● Some technical details of the „demo cloud“:
● Host: Root server, 8 cores, 12 GByte RAM, 1
TByte Storage. Costs less than 50 €/month
● Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with KVM+Libvirt. Managed
(mostly) by Virt-manager and Virsh.
● Guest #10: Open Suse 12.1 (Netinstall, 32-Bit),
1 dedicated Core, 2 GByte RAM, 10 GByte HD

Thanks to the Suse people!
● „Weboffice“-tar.gz + Installer by Suse
(Thanks to Michael Meeks and his colleagues!)
● Libre Office is started with some variable magic,
GDK_BACKEND redirects output to Port 8080.
● Up to last week, the client browser has been a
problem because FF changed Websocket
behaviour for security reasons after version 4.1
(!). Since a few days this has been fixed.

New Game:
● Cloud, web, mobile are the buzzwords of
tommorrow's enterprise „desktops“.
● Data, software and systems will consolidate
within your hybrid cloud.
● The problem of „endpoint security“ will be
solved by not storing stuff on mobile devices
→ The focus will be on traffic security. With
BYOD that's as good as possible. :-(

True freedom of choice!
● After all those years, the browser will become
the universal client that so many augures have
predicted for a long time.
● The term „operating system“ is becoming less
and less relevant. Who cares if you are using
Android, iOS, Chrome OS, Tizen, Boot2Gecko,
Windows (with or without Metro) or even a
Linux with KDE, Gnome, LXDE or ...?
→ It's the browser that matters.

Borders disappear
● The distinction between a browser, a mobile
and a desktop „App“ is rapidly vanishing.
● Users will no longer notice the difference.
● Content and presentation will eventually really
be separated.
