Around the world 1st day unit plan

Editor's Notes

  1. It is more important than ever to understand the beliefs and traditions of other countries so we know why they do things and if possible not offend them.
  2. With the growth of the internet it is possible to do business face to face via webcam at any time. During this unit plan we are going to learn about 8 different countries. (slide) You are going to divide into 8 groups which you will work in for the remainder of this unit. Your group will be expected to research the assigned country using the encyclopedias and internet websites to complete worksheets, create and present a power point. Each of you will keep a journal about what you learn each day telling what you liked, disliked and what you found most interesting. On our last day we will do an art project based on the different countries style. If possible have your parents look online at artwork of countries of interest. As we go through our countries be thinking about what you would like to create and when we are done they will be displayed in the hall.
  3. Australia’s primary language is English but they have a distinct accent and unusual slang. The are generally very relaxed and casual preferring to use first names but are to the point and appreciate brevity. When I refer art of a specific country I’m speaking of art produced by people who are actual from that country, not artists from different parts of the world who come to see the country. Joanne Dunn was born in Australia and the subject of most of her work is animals and the landscape of Australia which is customary subject of artwork for Australians.
  4. China is located beside of Russia and India and has long been known for it’s silk and beautiful fabrics. Because they are the most densely populated country in the world couples are only allowed to have one child. The primary language is Chinese but most business people speak English. They have a communist government which promotes atheism but has freedom of religion. Most people practice Confucianism. They emphasize a collectivist society instead of individualism where everyone is responsible for the group and their actions.Much of Chinese artwork deals with religion and daily activities, celebrations and nature. The Forbidden City was “forbidden” because it was the Emperors palace and commoners weren’t allowed entrance. It had been the home of 24 emperors up until 1911 when the young emperor abdicated under a republican revolution. It now serves as a museum.
  5. Egypt is located in the Middle northern Africa near Libya and Saudi Arabia. It receives the least amount of rainfall than anywhere else in the world so most of the population lives near the Nile River. The wearing of a veil or scarf is of Muslim belief to show modesty and prominent in the Middle East not just Egypt. The way the scarf is worn also distinguishes the persons belief. Some women are also required to cover their hands in the more rigid practices they all must have their faces covered when in the presence of men they are not related or aren’t married to.Cairo is know as the City of 1,000 Minarets which are the tall spires on the buildings. Mosques are not just for religious celebrations but sometimes house Islamic schools, hospitals and even mausoleums and tombs.
  6. Ireland is located off the west coast of the United Kingdom. It has two official languages, English and Irish Gaelic, though it is feared the Irish language will be lost over the next few generations. The land has many green fields with lots of stones which were used to make fences and build houses and roads. One famous landmark, using very large stones, is the Dromberg Stone Circle built 2000-500B.C. The two tallest portal stones were arranged to the north-east forming an entrance and lowest stone to the south-west called the axial stone. The circles have anywhere from 5 to 19 stones. The purpose is debated between religious or ceremonial meeting places, a location for different communities to meet and trade to a way to measure movements of celestial bodies.Irish or Celtic artwork was usually made up of knots, labyrinths and crosses along with animals. The knots symbolize the thread of life and animals also represented different things like magic for horses and salmon for knowledge.
  7. Many have said the shape of Italy reminds them of a boot which makes it easy to identify. It is located in Southern Europe just below France on a peninsula that extends out into the Mediterranean Sea. First impressions are very important to Italians and how one dresses can tell their social class and education. They are very fashion conscious and judge people based on their clothing and how they carry themselves before they are even introduced to a person.Rome is the capital of Italy but Rome has also been recognized as it’s own independent state since 1929 and is seat of the papacy of the Roman Catholic Church.Rome has many fountains due to the aqueducts and the Trevi Fountain is the largest fountain in Rome. Legend has it if you toss a coin over your shoulder into the fountain you will eventually return to Rome.
  8. Mexico has a hierarchal society and takes great offence to the chain of authority being broken. They are fairly formal in business and first names should not be used unless one is invited to do so.Mexico declared it’s independence from Spain in Sept. of 1810. But the most celebrated holiday is Cinco de Mayo in remembrance of Mexico’s victory over a French invasion in 1862 intended to overthrow the government and set up a French monarchy. They wear traditional dress and there is a lot of music and dancing as well as some reenactments. Another popular holiday celebrates life and death and it is called Day of the Dead. They have parades, put flowers on tombstones and many have their faces painted like skulls. The most important part of the celebration is the creation of an alter where pictures of loved ones past are placed with mementoes and food.
  9. Russia is the largest country in the world located in northeastern Europe and northern Asia. They are a very emotional people and believe that peoples feelings take precedence over facts. They trust you more if you maintain eye contact.Of the many churches which are a big tourist draw the Church of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is done in traditional Russian style. The church walls are said to have more mosaics than any other church in the world. The gusli string instrument is the oldest known in Russia and was only used as accompaniment to songs. They have many superstitions one of note is not making hand gestures to ones self to demonstrate something negative like showing where someone received a cut on the face or elsewhere.Traditional Russian folk art usually uses rich colors and depicts nature or happenings in Russian life. Matryoshka has become one of the most famous symbols of the Russian culture all over the world. It’s a traditional Russian wooden toy and such nesting doll can hold up to about 30 smaller dolls inside. This wood panel depicts two men hunting with falcons.
  10. Latin America has a very relaxed, welcoming feeling. That relaxed feel comes across in conversation as they like to touch when talking which some westerners may feel is invading their personal space. Spain can be divided into 17 different regions all with different slightly different climates. Spain has always made good use of windmills. In ages past they used them to ground grain and pump water out of the ground today with a little adjustment in appearance they are providing up to 30% of their electricity. Windmills of Spain also bring to mind the great literary work of Cervantes Saavedra-Don Quixote. Quixote goes on many adventures with his friend Sancho one of which was attacking windmills because he thought they were giants.Spain has many celebrations and traditions one of which is bullfighting and the running of the bulls. Bullfighting first began in 1133 for the coronation of king Alfonso VIII. It was originally an outlet for noblemen to display their grace, form and skill. Santiago, the Apostle Saint James the Greater is Spain’s patron saint. The feast of the Immaculate Conception is also Mothers Day, the feast of St. Joseph is Fathers Day.They observe many holidays in accordance with Saints or religious associations. Spain was the center of style in the 16th century with their beaded and jeweled clothing but because they refused to change and progress it shifted to places like Paris. For celebrations they wear a style called flamenco clothing with the women’s dresses having lots of ruffles.
