Linux is a free and open-source operating system first released in 1991 as an alternative to proprietary operating systems like Microsoft Windows. It is fast, secure, and provides solutions for all types of computing from servers and supercomputers to smartphones, tablets, and more. More than 90% of the world's fastest supercomputers run Linux, and the Android mobile operating system is based on the Linux kernel. Linux has a large worldwide community that helps and contributes to its ongoing development and improvement.
2. What is Linux?
First Linux is released in October 5, 1991 by Linus Torvalds.
Linux is a Unix-like operating system that was designed to provide
personal computer users a free or very low-cost operating system
comparable to traditional and usually more expensive operating systems
i.e. Microsoft Windows.
Unlike Windows, Linux is publicly open and extendible by contributors.
3. Linux for Humans….
• Linux is fast and even more faster
on latest machines.
• Linux is far more secure than
Windows.
• It is free and stylish, where as
Windows can cost you 150$ for
one license.
• Linux provides solution for every
type of computing.
4. • It is a leading operating system on servers and other big
iron systems such as mainframe computers and
Power of Linux
supercomputers.
• More than 90% of today's 500 fastest supercomputers
run some variant of Linux, including the 10 fastest.
• Linux also runs on embedded systems (devices where
the operating system is typically built into the firmware
and highly tailored to the system) such as mobile
phones, tablet computers, network routers, televisions
and video game consoles.
6. World-Wide Community
There is a World-Wide Community of
professionals which are always there to help
every one voluntarily.
In April 2010 Chris Kenyon, vice president for
OEM at Canonical Ltd., estimated that there
were 12 million Ubuntu users.
