Synesthesia Mask
Intel 2015
In response to the design challenge given by Intel, I designed the
Synesthesia Mask. This mask demonstrates the advanced
capabilities of the Intel Edison microcontroller by technologically
recreating the sensation of synesthesia for wearers, creating
empathy for those with this rare sensory perspective. This project
went viral and was featured in the March/April 2016 edition of
Popular Science.

Inspired by my grandmother, who lost her vision to preventable
glaucoma, I designed a portable fundus camera for remote
ophthalmoscopy. Leveraging the computing and imaging power of
modern smartphones, Thema takes diagnostic-quality retinal
images that can be used to detect a wide range of diseases, from
cerebral malaria to diabetic retinopathy. Thema is currently being
used by optometrists in South Africa for screening in remote
villages.

Erb
Erb is an interactive smart garden that grows fresh herbs. Erb will
send reminders to water your herbs, inform you when your plants
are not getting enough light and send alerts when garden temperture
drops low enough to inhibit growth. Designed as a kitchen applance,
Erb serves as a physical reminder that healthy eating can be simple
and delicious.

Giant Etch-a-Sketch
An outsized remake of the classic children’s toy, this life-sized
etch-a-sketch was part of the Intel Edison content creation
campaign. Aimed at teaching the basics of stepper motor
cotrol and Arduino programming, this project was featured on
Instructables with easy step-by-step instructions.

Despite launching large constellations of satellites, Planet Labs’
on-orbit failure rate was unacceptably high. My job was to design and
implement a prototyping and testing architecture that would ensure
that no single hardware change could break our satellites. Impleme
tation resulted in a reduction of critical on-orbit failures by 50%.

Space Simulation Plate
This device tests the heat transfer attributes and performance of
satellite electronics boards and small mechanical components
during extreme temperature swings in a vacuum. The goal is to
ensure all heat transfer is conductive or radiative, and not convec-
tive. The Space Simulation Plate design required robust mounting
options for components of many shapes and sizes. Cooling is in-
duced through the circulation of chilled ethylene glycol, and heat-
ing is induced by large kapton heaters.
