Planning for the future Facing the challenges of a changing world In 2007, 50% of the worlds population lived in cities By 2030 60% of the projected global population are expected to live in cities (4.9 billion people!) ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

1. Planning for the future Our population is increasing We need to accommodate for population growth over the next 20 years and beyond. Over 145,000 new dwellings will be required. 115,000 of those to be within existing urban areas by 2026.

1. Planning for the future Our Shared Vision In 2006 – 55,000 residents had their say about the future of Brisbane. Brisbane’s friendliness, our green open spaces and our outdoor lifestyle are important. Our shared vision: living in Brisbane 2026 is Council’s plan for the future.

CAN ACHIEVE Plan for where growth will go State what uses and activities are OK Set standards for development Inform building design Inform streetscape design Identify places and spaces for people Improve safety and access Retain and protect character CANT ACHIEVE Stop people from moving to the area Make development happen Prohibit or stop development Put new conditions on existing development Stop state and federal government development Rent control Instigate services such as public transport

What has happened so far? 2006 - West End / Woolloongabba Local Plan ( 17 distinct precincts) 2007/2008 - Draft Kurilpa Structure Planning (Concentrated on Kurilpa Point only) May 2008 - Council Resolution to prepare Neighbourhood Plan June 2008 - Strategic Directions Forum recommended new plan boundary new plan boundary area
