2. INITIAL IDEAS
• I aim to create a film trailer under the umbrella of
the thriller genre, while infusing conventions of
horror, to create a dual-genre film, which is heavily
done in the industry.
• This is to create a product that isn’t constantly
churned out in the cinema already. Through
research, I found this had been done with The
House At The End of the Street, which effectively
used some elements from both in their film trailer.
• This will allow me to appeal to more than one target
audience and allow me to consider what elements
would attract viewers from both genres.
3. INITIAL IDEAS
• I think I would create a teaser trailer as opposed to a
theatrical trailer, because it’d have to be highly
effective in enticing the audience in a substantially
shorter amount of time. This would in turn create more
hype around the film, leading to the audience wanting
to learn more.
• A teaser trailer would be able to reach a wider
audience, through television and the internet, such as
YouTube adverts; unlike a theatrical trailer, which would
only be shown to those already buying a similar product.
• Furthermore, through effective and shorter, quick-cut
editing, the audience would get a sense of verisimilitude
4. VS.
TRAILERS
• Theatrical trailers are
longer and shown in
theaters right before the
film's release; this gives no
time for the audience to
react to the film.
• A trailer is more
detailed, and may provide
plenty of detail as to what
the plot is about.
• Many modern trailers tend
to give away too much
information ahead of
time, which ruins part of
the suspense leading up to
the film.
• Teaser trailers are found
online, on television and in
theaters for quite a long
time before the film's
release; this effectively
creates a build-up and
suspense for the audience
before its release.
• Its purpose is to tease the
audience by giving away
snippets of the plot.
• They do not reveal any
significant plot details and
are meant only to give a
minor glimpse as what is to
come.
THEATRICAL TEASER
5. EXAMPLE:
TAKEN 2
After watching both the teaser and official trailer
for the popular thriller, I immediately noticed a
distinct difference:
• Length: 0:58 and 2:14
• The teaser trailer mainly informs the audience on
the initial premise, by infusing scenes from the first
film for context as well as the situation the
protagonists are going to encounter –without any
further scenes shown to the viewer.
• However, the official trailer gave a lot more away in
terms of the storyline, and gave the audience a
highly detailed narrative of the final product.
6. IDEA – A CULT
• This is the main idea I have surrounding the idea of a cult
• This idea for a teaser would only inform the audience
that a girl that has become involved in a cult, that her
friends try and help her to get out, but that they uncover
a bigger secret -leaving the audience wanting to learn
more.
• The biggest focus would be the imagery I show to the
audience, which would give away the tone of the film
which could either attract or dissuade the audience.
• The Skeleton Key uses imagery in the opening of its film
trailer which highlights the witchcraft elements of the film
- something I’d consider for my own video.
7. AUXILIARY PRODUCT 1
MAGAZINE COVER
• I would create a film magazine front cover featuring
the film to help advertise the upcoming film and
accompany the teaser trailer.
• This would require a photo from the film to act as the
main image that would most attract my implied
target audience to pay to see the film.
• This will allow me to use the skills that I learnt last year
on Photoshop, but still act as challenging, by
researching into how a film magazine differentiates
from a music one.
8. AUXILIARY PRODUCT 2
FILM POSTER
• I would also create a poster to help advertise
the film.
• While this would also require an effective image
from the film featuring the protagonist, the
poster would only be representing my
film, unlike the magazine cover; thus allowing
me to use slogans and an effective colour
scheme through editing.
• I would aim to have the protagonist breaking
the fourth wall and directly address the reader
for better effect.
