Pearl Harbor                            December 7th, 1941
What? Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike attack on 	the United States by the Japanese that was 	meant to prevent the U.S Pacific Fleet from 	interfering with military action of Japan.  A series of two “waves” by the military lasting two 	hours long
When and Where? December 7th 1941 December 8th in Japan The air attack began at 7:48 a.m Hawaiian time Second attack- 8:55 a.m Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
Why? In September 1940 the U.S placed an embargo on 	Japan They couldn’t export steel, scrap iron, and aviation fuel to Japa Two days after Japan signed a neutrality treaty with 	the Soviet Union the U.S, Britain, and the 	Netherlands froze all Japanese assets Prevented them from buying oil
Who? Attack by the Japanese on the U.S Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, and Admiral Nagumo 	commander of the Japanese fleet initiated the 	planning of the attack on the U.S Pearl Harbor was under the command of Admiral 	Husband E. Kimmel and Lt. General Walter C. 	Short
How it Started In early 1941 Admiral Yamamoto started preparing	plans for the conquest of the resources from 	South Asia Pearl Harbor was a vital attack for Yamamoto’s plan The military plan had three phases Attack on Pearl harbor  Extend the perimeter of Japan’s sphere of Influence Then move onto Northern Solomons. New Guinea, Java, Sumatra, Malaya, Burma, Thailand, the Philippines, and Boreno
Damage Caused Four U.S Navy Battleships were sunk Sank and damaged three cruisers, three destroyers,	 and one minelayer 188 U.S aircraft were destroyed 2,402 men killed 1,282 men wounded Japanese lost 29 aircraft and five submarines 65 men killed or wounded One Japanese sailor was captured
How it Effected the U.S Led the U.S directly into World War II Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S 	December 11th We quickly recovered and formed our military again	 and had a victory at the Battle of Midway Four years later the U.S destroyed the Japanese 	Empire
Today’s Effect Better radar equipment has been made for scouting 	to prevent this from happening  Unified the divided American population like never 	before Many American Lives were lost
Pearl Harbor Today Today Pearl Harbor is Port and Naval Station The USS Arizona was one of the main ships that 	sank that day so now there is a concrete hull 	placed their to symbolize the loss of the ship as	 a memorial Dedicated on May 30th, 1962
Facts Japanese citizens were just as surprised as 	Americans Referred to “A date that will live in infamy” The day of the attack Britain declared war on Japan President at the time was Franklin D. Rooselvelt Pearl Harbor wasn’t in a state of high alert when the 	attack started, the anti-aircraft guns were left  	unmanned
