He frequently competes At moving slowly in the yard, And, recently, he’s got the hang Of staring very hard. He races other turtles, seeing Who can come in last. I hope you weren’t expecting That my turtle would be fast. He’s not too fond of motion, So you’ll never see him run. He only plays the kinds of sports That turtles think are fun. --Ken Nesbitt

GUY Facts! Surveys show that both boys and girls are at about the same level of understanding in math, but in verbal skills, girls roughly surpass the boys. And independent research organization confirms that boys have fallen behind in reading in every single state. :O the Center on Education Policy, an independent research organization, found, that in elementary schools, about 79 percent of girls could read at a level deemed “proficient,” compared with 72 percent of boys.
GUYS READ… Why might boys be having trouble Biologically, boys are slower to develop than girls and often struggle with reading and writing skills early on. The action-oriented, competitive learning style of many boys works against them learning to read and write Many books boys are asked to read don’t appeal to them. They aren’t motivated to want to read. As a society, we teach boys to suppress feelings. Boys aren’t practiced and often don’t feel comfortable exploring the emotions and feelings found in fiction. Boys don’t have enough positive male role models for literacy. Because the majority of adults involved in kids’ reading are women, boys might not see reading as a masculine activity.
LEVELED READERS DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE LEVEL YOU ARE READING! TEACHERS WILL APPRECIATE ANY READING YOU ARE DOING ON YOUR OWN! ORAL QUIZZING WITH KUDOS CAN BE AN INCENTIVE FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS!
Genres for Guys! Biographies (don’t be afraid to check out books on real people). Historical Readings ( Some of our countries most famous war, people, events, etc., can be found in this section). Let boys know that all these materials count as reading. Give boys choice. Motivate guys to want to read by letting them choose texts they will enjoy. Find out what they want. Let them choose from a new, wider range of reading. Be realistic. Start small. Boys aren’t believing that “Reading is wonderful.” Reading is often difficult and boring for them. Let’s start with “Here is one book/magazine/text you might like.” For more info or cool advice check out the GUYS READ site: http://www.guysread.com/about/
The Big Cheese: Jon Scieszka, National Ambassador for Young People Literature Jon Scieszka: A former grade-school teacher, he’s also the creator of Guys Read (www.guysread.com), a literacy program that wants boys to know that reading can be just as absorbing as waving a Wii controller.
