Postdoc position on "Theoretical investigation of catalysis on nanoalloys" in the group of Professor Roy Johnston (Birmingham, UK)
1. Research Fellow – Theoretical Investigation of
Catalysis on Nanoalloys
College of Engineering and Physical Sciences
University of Birmingham -School of Chemistry
Fixed Term Contract – 29 months
Salary from £28,132 to £38,907 a year
Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher to work in the group of Professor Roy
Johnston in the School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham. The project is part of a
multi-centre collaboration, with the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, King’s College London and
University College London, funded by the EPSRC under the 5 year Critical Mass Grant
EP/J010804/1 “TOUCAN: Towards an Understanding of Catalysis on Nanoalloys”.
Applicants should have (or be about to receive) a PhD in theoretical chemistry or theoretical
physics, or in a related area. The project will involve the development of the theory and
computational tools required to perform global optimization of mono- and bimetallic clusters
(“nanoalloys”) and to study the adsorption and reaction of small molecules on these clusters, with
the aim of understanding nanocatalysis and predicting improved catalysts.
The post is for a period of 29 months and is available from 1 June 2014.
Informal enquiries can be directed to Professor Roy Johnston via e-mail at
