The Asmat are an indigenous hunter-gatherer culture living in West Papua, Indonesia. West Papua is located on the western half of the island of New Guinea north of Australia. The Asmat were one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer societies in the world, with traditions like nose piercing and body painting for ceremonies and war, but their traditional culture is threatened by deforestation, colonization, and assimilation into the modern world.
