To begin, it important to be knowledgeable about your diploma options and the differences between them. Important to note is depending on when you began 9th grade, your diploma requirements may look different. For instance, the Standard Diploma requires 22 credits and 6 Verified Credits.Whereas the Advanced Diploma requires 26 credits and 9 Verified Credits. As a reminder, a verified credit is obtained by passing both the course and the end of course SOL for a particular subject.Another substantial difference is the World Language component. You must take a World Language for the Advanced Diploma. It is also important for you to consider college requirements. To explore each diploma type in more detail, please visit the Student Services Website’s Academic Advising Tab.
Speaking of Course Offerings, the following slides will give you a quick peek at the courses available to you in all core and elective areas. Detailed information about each of these courses can also be found in the West Potomac Course Offerings Booklet.
New to English this year is Debate!
Social Studies also has a new course offering called Law in Action.
Science will offer Oceanography this year.
Please note the addition of the Algebra 2 Strategies course. This course will be taken in conjunction with Algebra 2 as an elective to provide extra support. Math teachers and counselors will help in the decision-making process regarding students to be enrolled.
World Languages are an important aspect of the Advanced Diploma and in many cases are a prerequisite for college entry. Be sure to research your college of interest’s requirements.
Beyond the graduation requirements of Health and PE 9 and 10, there are many options. Back on the books: Sports Medicine!
Electives:There are so many to choose from! How will you ever decide???
Think about your interests.
Ask yourself: What do I like to do?
What would I like to learn about?
What am I good at?
Could I stand to learn more?
I’d like to expand my knowledge.
So many choices…and it doesn’t stop here.
There are also Academy Courses; highly specialized electives. If you’re interested, Academies are hosting student visitors now; you can see the classes in action. Questions? See your counselor.
The Academies require an application. This will include a transcript, your attendance and a written statement by you.
When choosing classes it is very important you consider all of these things.
Counselors cannot stress enough the importance of choosing your classes wisely.
Please note when your grade-level is set to register. Late or incomplete forms will cause a delay in your registration and that may mean not getting the courses you want.
We look forward to meeting with each and every one of you!
