2. tips
• Though stitch and glue method has been in existence for
many years, the development of epoxy resin and high
quality marine plywood has made it more popular. This
method requires minimum skills and basic wood working
knowledge only.
• Stitch and glue method involves gluing plywood panels
together with the help of fiberglass and epoxy resin.
Stitching helps to hold the panels in place, when the
glue is applied and allowed to cure. There are numerous
variations in stitch and glue boat building methods, but
the basic remain the same.
3. STEPS
• First you need to cut the planks or panels to the right shape and
size.
• You need to sew the planks by drilling small holes along the edges
of the panels.
• The copper wire is strung through the holes and warped to grasp
the panels firmly together, until they are glued.
• You can use plastic cable ties instead of copper wire. The ties are
very convenient to use and fast to tighten.
• Stitch and glue method is much faster and simple method than
other methods, as it is free from complicated forms and tricky
clamping. The use of epoxy fillets is the major reason for the
popularity of this method. You can apply the fillets very easily and
add strength to the wooden boat.
4. using plywood
• You can build wooden boats using plywood over frame
method. You need to start the process with wooden
frames called ribs. You need to place the frames using a
construction jig and the hull needs to be built upside
down. Then attach the longitudinal frame members into
jagged slots in the ribs.
• The plywood can be fixed to the frames using various
methods like glue, screws, nails and epoxy. If you want
to use the stitch and glue method, you need to build the
boat from high quality marine grade plywood. You can
then cover it with fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin to
improve strength and water incursion.
