Technological Fertilizer By Scott Wisness
Fertilizer is a Solution! The purpose of fertilizer is to provide nutrients to help seeds grow Adjustments must be made to our education system as well as our world changes Technology is that fertilizer that is needed to adjust to the changing times.
Technology Integration in Our School
Technology Impacts Student Achievement! Did the fertilizer have an impact? Research has proved it! Showed positive gains in achievement in researcher constructed tests, standardized tests & national tests.
Clearly Defined Educational Goals of Technology What students can demonstrate they can do with technology can be a measure as well. Students can become independent thinkers and let their creativity shine. It’s hard to evaluate, but our school can set expectations.
Technology Integration Must Be Creative Teachers must have an open-minded view on opportunities How can we use mobile devices? Not all students have a home computer, but they most likely have an iPod A teacher in Idaho used iPods to have the students download videos, books on tape, and more Mobile devices were used for a Geo-Historic project.
Students Use Computers for Class Work, Not Just for Games
Do Students Prefer Classes With Technology? Most students preferred classes with moderate technology. Classes with extensive technology was second.
Have you ever gotten a new cell phone and not known how to use all the applications? It is similar when teachers get new technology We don’t get our full money’s worth if they aren’t properly trained how to use it and incorporate it in their classrooms. Interactive white boards introduced at a school. Staff was trained well. Teacher training is very important!
A Study in Which Interactive White Boards Were Introduced Teachers Loved using the Interactive White Boards The staff believed they could be used & enthusiastic! The school was concerned about being underused The teachers listed the advantages of interactive white boards
Is Technology Worth the Investment? Industry and the service sector are more reliant on technology than ever. Basic computer literacy & knowledge is expected in colleges & universities Align curriculum to technology Providing students with technology increases student performance
If Government and Businesses are Using the Best Known Technology Possible, Why Aren’t Our Schools? Teachers and students are excited! Don’t want students to fall behind in college. Our school must do a service and provide the proper technological tools for our young men and women to be successful.

Editor's Notes

  1. My name is Scott Wisness. Being an agriculture teacher, I am able to relate it to anything in our life. When I thought of how technology is changing, it made me think of how our agriculture industry is drastically changing as well. Think of yourself as a farmer who has to deal with constant changing conditions around him: drought, poor soil, hail, bad prices, and even flooding. How does a farmer adjust to these conditions?
  2. Fertilizer is a solution to help improve conditions for a farmer. In this presentation, I will show how technology is fertilizer that is necessary for the success of our students. Our schools plant the seed for our students to be successful in life. Just as fertilizer must be added to adjust to changing characteristics in the soil, students must be provided with the technology to be contributing members of society in this changing world.
  3. My presentation will focus on four areas of technology integration in our school: 1) technology impacts student achievement, 2) a new generation of digital learners and communication, 3) teacher training to utilize maximum use of technology equipment & programs, and 4) preparation of students for advanced technology use in higher education and business. I will explain each of these main points, provide research studies that prove the effectiveness, and show charts proving the importance.
  4. Does fertilizer help crops? If applied correctly, it does? Research has shown that technology does have a general impact on student achievement. We can see the negative effects of not using fertilizer in plants, but how can we tell impacts of technology integration in schools. Many different studies have shown that technology has a strong impact on students test scores and their future success in life. Many studies have proved this, but I chose three to share with you today from 3 different studies. In the Kulik Meta-Analyasis study, James Kulik (1994) found that on average, students who used computer-based instruction scored at the 64th percentile on tests of achievement compared to students in the control conditions without computers who scored at the 50th percentile. In Sivin-Kachala Review of the Research, Jay Sivin-Kachala (1998) review of the research of students in technology rich environments experienced positive effects on achievement in all major subject areas. In West Virginia’s Basic Skills/Computer Education Statewide Initiative study, Dale Mann’s (1999) study of the state of West Virginia’s Basic Skills/Computer Education (BS/CE) program proved that the more they were involved in the more students were involved in BS/CE, the more their test scores rose on the Stanford 9.Overall these and other studies proved that students in computer assisted instruction, and other similar technologies showed positive gains in achievement on researcher constructed tests, standardized tests, and national tests. I will also express to the school board the importance of setting our educational expectations as to what we want our students to achieve. Standardized tests and meeting AYP are important in today’s school systems, but other measures do exist when we discuss the impact technology has on our students’ success. I will explain those as well. These and other studies have proved time and time again that students in computer assisted instruction, and other similar technologies showed positive gains in achievement on researcher constructed tests, standardized tests and national tests. The more technology we can incorporate, the better our students will test!
  5. In addition to student achievement test scores, our school must also set clearly defined educational outcomes in technology. Although research has proved technology improves test scores, it shouldn’t be our only measure of success. What students can demonstrate they can do with technology can be a measure as well. Students can become independent thinkers and let their creativity shine while using technology. It presents so many opportunities for our students to become a success for their future. I believe that the purpose of education is to prepare our young men and women for their future. Technology is that future and with our new generation, we must use it to its’ maximum potential for the betterment of our students. It’s hard to evaluate, but our school can set expectations so we aren’t completely relying on standardized tests to measure our success in technology.
  6. As soil ph, nutrients, and the environment changes, fertilizer must be added to adjust to those changing conditions. Our new generation of students grew up using digital technology. It is important for teachers to have an open-minded view in finding new ways to tap into the new generation of digital learners and communication. This change calls for a change in the amount of technology they should use. Technology integration doesn’t always have to cost a lot of money. Teachers must have an open minded view of how to communicate and teach digitally. I read an article where the case for using tools that essentially every student has already. In P. Deubel’s Article, “Mobile Devices: Facing Challenges and Opportunities for Learning”, she gave some cases for how iPods and other mobile devices were used. She explained that not all students have a home computer, but they most likely have an iPod. Why don’t we use this technology? One example of its use was teacher in Idaho who used iPods to have the students download videos, books on tape, and more.Another teacher used mobile devices were used for a Geo-Historic project. The students used their gps feature on their phones to mark historic locations around town and write a brief description on it. What better way to make it real and exciting for the students. They are using their phones constantly. Teachers might as well use them for a purpose and take advantage of it. The idea of technology integration doesn’t always have to cost the district tons of money. It just requires people to have an open mind in new ways to use it.
  7. Students today of course like to use computers for fun, games and social interaction, but they also prefer to use it for school as well. The chart shows information a study from “Convenience, Communication, and Control: How Students Use Technology” by R. Kvavik where 4,374 students were interviewed from 13 different colleges from across the country. The numbers show how many hours per week the students used technology. You’ll notice that classroom activities and studying tops the list. Playing video games is further down the list, not too far above using excel, powerpoint and other computer applications. By a large margin, students use a computer first for doing classroom activities and studying. It was more than communicating or surfing for fun. If we had more access to technology, our students would jump at the chance to use it more for school, rather then just for pleasure.
  8. The same study from Kvavik’s article also asked the students what level of technology they prefer in their courses. Most students preferred classes with moderate technology.Classes with extensive technology was second. I was surprised that so few liked entirely online classes, but I can see how the social interaction with others is important. Students prefer classes that uses large amounts of technology, so it is important that we incorporate it as much as possible.
  9. Farmers must be educated in how to test the soil and select proper fertilizer to add to improve deficienciesIt is just as important for teachers to know how to use the technology they have. Ask yourself, have you ever gotten a new cell phone and not known how to use all the applications? It is similar when teachers get new technologyWe don’t get our full money’s worth if they aren’t properly trained how to use it and incorporate it in their classrooms. I read a study in which Interactive whiteboards were introduced to a school and the staff was able to utilize it well because they were trained how to use it. If staff isn’t trained properly on technology they have, that money is wasted. I taught in a school myself where everyone has a smartboard and not everyone knew the capabilities. I didn’t even know all the capabilitites and asked my students how to use it quite often. If we don’t have a solid plan for professional development in technology, then we are making it more difficult on our teachers and that money is wasted.Teacher training is very important in the success of technology integration.
  10. The study I was mentioning is called -“Running with Technology: The Pedogogic Impact of the Large-scale Introduction of the Interactive Whiteboards in One Secondary School”. The authors Glover and Miller studied how the addition of the IWBs had an effect on teachers. They found that teachers loved using the Interactive Whiteboards, but started out using them for only a presentation screen or projector. In the initial stages, 88 % believe that the facilities are to be further influenced and a majority of the staff is enthusiastic. The concern of the school was that they were being underused at first because of lack of training was overcome in this case as 97 % received training. This was a success story in which proper funding and resources were used to make the whiteboards a success. The teachers enjoyed them too. On the next slide, I will show the advantages of disadvantages the teachers found after using them.
  11. Farmers must nurture, fertilize and adjust to changing soil conditions. With proper nutrients and other conditions in place, a farmer can expect a great harvest. Technology can be thought of in the same way. It is being used more than ever in government and business. It isn’t just recommended to be exposed to technology, it is necessary.According to Palozzi and Spradlin’s article, “Educational Technology in Indiana: Is It Worth the Investment?” some recommendations were given when considering that question. (Slide 11)They reminded us that industry and the service sector are more reliant on technology than ever. Colleges and Universities expect incoming students to have basic computer literacy as the use of technology continues to grow in higher education. The state must continue efforts to align classroom curriculum with the use of educational technology.Providing students with laptops or home wireless networking can increase student performance. It has been proven that technology is worth the investment and we should allocate our resources as much as we can to incorporate it in the best way possible.
  12. I ask you this question:If government and businesses are using the best known technology possible, why aren’t our schools?Teachers and students are both excited to learn about what is new and available. Technology is exciting and even though it is scary, we as a district should do what we can to give our teachers what they need and tap into that curiosity that our students have for it.Many higher education institutions use an increasing amount of a variety of technology tools; students should be knowledgeable in those areas so they do not fall behind. We must prepare our young people for the future. If we don’t introduce them to all of the technology that is out there and ask them to have an open mind, they will have more difficulty in college. Our school must do a service and provide the proper technological tools for our young men and women to be successful, because that is what we are all in education for. In conclusion, Just as farmers need a plentiful harvest, our schools want to provide a generation with the best tools possible to be successful. Technology is changing so fast that it is hard to keep up. Studies have shown that technology has a direct effect on student achievement. Our atmosphere of our students is rapidly changing. A new generation of digital learners is upon us. I want to guarantee that we will put proper funding into teacher training, because they must learn how to use the equipment they have. I believe the purpose of education is to prepare young men and women to be valuable members of society. To be able to do that, they must be given the best possible technological tools possible. We must provide as much as funding to technology as we possibly can.
