4. Objectives of Component To enable students to : - improve their proficiency through reading - respond to text - draw lessons and insights from slices of life - understand and appreciate other cultures - relate events , characters to own life - expose students to models of good writing.

5. LEARNING OUTCOMES 3.1 Listen to, read, view and respond to literary works by a. understanding and retelling in one’s own words the story, play, poem and song heard and read and the film viewed, and giving one’s own opinion of the text. b. Recognising elements in a story such as characters, events; c. explaining the message the writer is trying to convey and discussing how this relates to one’s life; d. reciting poems with feelings and expression. 3.2 Express themselves creatively and imaginatively by a. dramatising texts and role-playing characters b. retelling a story from a different point of view and presenting it in another genre; c. composing simple poems, stories and dialogues

6. Manpower Development in the Age of Globalisation Manpower development needs bring with it certain demands to adapt the present secondary school curriculum. Role of the Literature Component in building a Malaysian society that is humanistically conscious Care for immediate family Care for fellow Malaysians Care for the world community A caring society is part of our preparation for globalisation! We want to avert the dangers of dehumanisation that inevitably besets industrial societies! Literature creates awareness of social problems!

8. Role of the Literature Component in building a civil society To awaken students to social work within their means and ability Care of disadvantaged groups in society e.g. the aged! Preservation of age-old universal values in line with Malaysian values! Each role shows diversity through very detailed description Mr. Nobody Anonymous This is a humorous conversation between a student and teacher. The student comes up with all kinds of excuses for being late. I Wonder Jeannie Kirby This poem focuses on the curiosity of a child about the world that he lives in through the questions he poses. Heir Conditioning M. Shanmugalingam This poem is about two generations talking about how modern inventions have changed their lives – how technology has affected human life and the environment today. A Fighter’s Lines (Marzuki Ali) Translated by Rohani Longuet This poem on patriotism calls to the younger generation to stand up for justice and freedom as a legacy of hope to continue the struggles of our independent fighters. Leisure William Henry Davies The poem wants us to take time to be aware of the beauty of nature around us and really appreciate it.

In fact, they appreciate their lives and make the most out of it. He had such quiet eyes Bibsy Soenharjo This poem talks about being careful when choosing friends as looks can be misleading and cause future regrets Nature H.D. Carberry A simple poem describing the climate of a tropical country and the different types of weather experienced in Jamaica. Are You Still Playing Your Flute? Zurinah Hassan There is an air of indifference and ignorance by the flutist who keeps on playing even when there is suffering, ugliness and discontentment in the real world.

16. SHORT STORY- FORM 1 SHORT STORY- FORM 2 Flipping Fantastic Jane Langford This story is presented in the form of a diary of 3 people, the twins – James and Tristan and their mum. The diary entries focuses on the issue of the twins going to different schools when all this while they have been together in the same school. Tristan is a in a wheelchair and is the stronger one. James is physically normal but is timid. They wonder how each of them is going to survive without the other in their new schools and the mum starts wondering if she has made the right decision by putting them in different schools. One is One and All Alone Nicholas Fisk This story is a sci-fi story set in the year 2045. Trish and her dad are on a space journey to Trion where her mum is waiting for them. Trish is the only child on board. She feels lonely and bored. Her only ‘friend’ is her Voice Printer, an interactive computer. So, she decides to clone herself. She named her clone, Clo. At first, it is fun to have a friend. Eventually, it becomes really irritating to be around someone exactly identical. Thus, Trish decides to ‘dispose’ of Clo. In the end, it is Clo who disposes of Trish and took over Trish’s life!

SHORT STORY- FORM 4 QWERTYUIOP Vivien Alcock A new employee is spooked by a ‘haunted’ electrical typewriter which is possessed by an ex-employee who used to work with the company under a previous boss. It seems that she is sending messages through the typewriter from beyond the grave and scaring all the new employees away so that she can have her job back. The Fruitcake Special Frank Brennan A story with a hint of romance on how a chemist from a perfume factory concocts a special perfume using a bit of fruitcake. Men seem to be drawn to this perfume. So what is the secret ingredient? Should she allow a man to fall for her because of the perfume or for who she truly is?

18. PLAYS - FORM 2 PLAYS- FORM 4 Rumpelstiltskin Adapted by Angela Lanyon This is a classic about a girl whose parents claim that she can turn straw into gold to the king. Of course Lisa cannot do it and it is Rumpelstiltskin who helps her in return for things she has got. Her last promise was to give him her baby and when he comes to claim the baby, she pleaded with him. Lisa was given the chance to guess his name in order to keep the baby. Gulp and Gasp John Townsend A comedy that revolves around a greedy Lord Septic who plans to buy a particular railway station because he wants to look for the Gatsby Gold hidden by the late Lady Gatsby who was murdered by his father there. Before she died, she left the locker key with her baby son, Percy who rescues a blind woman from Lord Septic and learns of his true identity.

NOVEL- FORM 1 Journey to the Centre of the Earth (Jules Verne) Retold by Davis Worth Miller & Katherine McClean Brevard The story tells of the adventure of Axel Lidenbrock, his uncle Otto and Hans Bjelke. Otto finds a mysterious message by the Icelandic explorer Arne Saknussemm. They find out that the note describes a secret passageway to the centre of the earth. Starting their journey in the volcanic Mount Sheffels, the adventurers find themselves descending deeper and deeper. Along the way, with Hans as their guide, the men discover some interesting things and danger but finally find a way up through another volcano in Sicily. Black Beauty (Anna Sewell) Retold by L.L. Owens This graphic novel depicts a colt, Black Beauty’s life as a farm horse and later trained to become a cab horse in a big town and how it finally settled down as a coach/wagon puller in the home of a kind mistress and his former stable help, Joe. The story highlights the friendship among Merrylegs, Ginger and Black Beauty. It shows the loyalty and peaceful nature of horses. It reflects the attitude of Black Beauty’s owners towards him. Black Beauty endures some mistreatment and the disrespect shown towards animals. The Boscombe Valley Mystery Arthur Conan Doyle It is 1875 and a murder occurs in Boscombe Valley. Charles McCarthy is dead and his son, James, is arrested. However, Alice Turner believes he is innocent and request Sherlock Holmes for help. Although the evidence indicates James’ involvement, Sherlock Holmes goes on to further investigate the mystery behind the murder. His findings lead him to Turner, the supposed family friend of McCarthy. Through clever work and thinking, another mystery is solved.
