BUT WHAT DO I SAY ON TWITTER? (The most common question asked) WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? – WHAT GETS YOU EXCITED? GRASPING TWITTER LINGO – If a word doesn’t exist “Twinvent” one… TWIT = Use of twitter TWEEP = Twitter message RETWEET = RT – Repeating a twitter message to your follower REPLY = Responding to a tweet FOLLOWING = People you follow FOLLOWERS = People who follow you UNFOLLOW = Stop following someone DM = Direct Message (sending a private tweet) TWEETUP = Meeting of twitterers (gathering at a specified location) HASHTAG = # Is used to filter by #location, #event, #product, or #service THANK YOU = For following, retweeting, answering questions
TWETIQUETTE = TWITTER ETIQUETTE Usage – Protocol – Etiquette is driven by Twitter users FOLLOW BACK PEOPLE WHO: Have a photo – have posted relevant tweets – have a name that makes sense Who are in your area #Vernon, #Kelowna, #Penticton, #Kamloops You can always un-follow (it’s nothing personal) Don’t send auto DM’s (direct messages) to welcome new followers Don’t SPAM by asking if a new follower wants to buy something from you Focus on sharing your knowledge (making you an expert in your field) Link people to interesting things Comment on other tweets, and retweet Promote interesting followers, and they will promote you Reply to people you are following (especially if they are not following you, yet) Mention your products or services less than 10% of the time Use short tweets to allow for easy RT’s (retweeting)
TWITTER TIPS (TWIPS) THINGS TO REMEMBER: Retweet, add RT as a prefix (good way to get followers) Add something to the RT so you won’t just be a parrot Don’t click on links in DM’s (your account can be hacked this way) Tweet live a couple of times a day (Allows for responses to questions) Take twitter with you using Ubertwitter, or a similar smart phone application Don’t respond to DM’s (direct messages) unless you know they are legitimate Write short tweets to allow space for retweeting. If someone has to shorten it, there is less chance that they will retweet your tweet Add the persons @name to their tweet when retweeting @willisetech came to talk about Social Media today, instead of… Willisetech came to talk about Social Media today
WHERE TO PUT YOUR TWITTER HANDLE (NAME) EVERYWHERE ! Business cards Web Site Email signature Vehicle decals Business windows Reception areas Tip: If you are using Facebook and YouTube, add these links to your marketing material as well. Like any form of advertising, if people don’t see it, you don’t exist ! (Think Coca~Cola visible and you will get the idea)
TWITTER RULES ! But a good rule to remember is… DON’T USE TWITTER ! USE THIRD PARTY TOOLS CREATE TO WORK WITH TWITTER INSTEAD TWEETDECK – Client side software used to organize twitter feeds, followers, lists, direct messages, and mentions. (Tweetdeck can organize other Social Media feeds as well) HOOTSUITE – Browser based tool similar to Tweetdeck SENDIBLE – Used to schedule tweets for a future date. At the moment, tweets can be scheduled up to 2015, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, annually UBERTWITTER – Take twitter with you on your smart phone device. I often tweet while at a client location, or event. When the client sees that this is being done, it helps build a stronger relationship TOOLS THAT ADD CONVENIENCE, AND ARE EFFICIENT TO USE
SETTING UP YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS GETTING INVOLVED: Create all Social Media accounts with the same username and password Use a consistent profile (The same on all Social Media sites) Add a photo (Recognizable as YOU) Make your twitter profile public Add a background graphic (to reflect personality) You can tweet as a person AND a business Link to your blog Own your Social Media personal name if it is available Own your Social Media business name PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR BRANDING ! (same with domain names)
