OpenDaylight is an open source project under the Linux Foundation with the goal of furthering the adoption and innovation of SDN through the creation of a common industry supported platform. With the rise of modern containers comes new problems to solve – especially in networking. Numerous container SDN solutions have recently entered the market, each best suited for a particular environment. Combined with multiple container runtimes and orchestrators available today, there exists a need for a common layer to allow interoperability between them and the network solutions. As different environments demand different networking solutions, multiple vendors and viewpoints look to a specification to help guide interoperability. Container Network Interface (CNI) is a specification started by CoreOS with the input from the wider open source community aimed to make network plugins interoperable between container execution engines. It aims to be as common and vendor-neutral as possible to support a wide variety of networking options — from MACVLAN to modern SDNs such as Weave and flannel. CNI is growing in popularity. It got its start as a network plugin layer for rkt, a container runtime from CoreOS. Today rkt ships with multiple CNI plugins allowing users to take advantage of virtual switching, MACVLAN and IPVLAN as well as multiple IP management strategies, including DHCP. CNI is getting even wider adoption with Kubernetes adding support for it. Kubernetes accelerates development cycles while simplifying operations, and with support for CNI is taking the next step toward a common ground for networking. For continued success toward interoperability, Kubernetes users can come to this session to learn the CNI basics. This talk will cover the CNI interface, including an example of how to build a simple plugin. It will also show Kubernetes users how CNI can be used to solve their networking challenges and how they can get involved. KubeCon schedule link: http://sched.co/4VAo

With the rise of modern containers comes new problems to solve – especially in networking. Numerous container SDN solutions have recently entered the market, each best suited for a particular environment. Combined with multiple container runtimes and orchestrators available today, there exists a need for a common layer to allow interoperability between them and the network solutions. As different environments demand different networking solutions, multiple vendors and viewpoints look to a specification to help guide interoperability. Container Network Interface (CNI) is a specification started by CoreOS with the input from the wider open source community aimed to make network plugins interoperable between container execution engines. It aims to be as common and vendor-neutral as possible to support a wide variety of networking options — from MACVLAN to modern SDNs such as Weave and flannel. CNI is growing in popularity. It got its start as a network plugin layer for rkt, a container runtime from CoreOS. Today rkt ships with multiple CNI plugins allowing users to take advantage of virtual switching, MACVLAN and IPVLAN as well as multiple IP management strategies, including DHCP. CNI is getting even wider adoption with Kubernetes adding support for it. Kubernetes accelerates development cycles while simplifying operations, and with support for CNI is taking the next step toward a common ground for networking. For continued success toward interoperability, Kubernetes users can come to this session to learn the CNI basics. This talk will cover the CNI interface, including an example of how to build a simple plugin. After a brief discussion of those options and the features they lack, we’ll show how to build an advanced load balancing solution for Kubernetes on top of NGINX, utilizing Kubernetes features including Ingress, Annotations, and ConfigMap. More and more applications are being developed as cloud-native, distributed, Microservices-based applications due to a simple reason. Microservice architecture offers an overwhelming set of benefits: better scalability, reliability, loose service coupling, and service-independent deployments. As usual, these benefits come with a price tag, e.g., concurrency issues, failure handling, retry policies, state management, and distributed tracing. This price tag leaves you less time to develop and focus on your business logic. The Distributed Application Runtime (Dapr) is an open-source project by Microsoft attempting to tackle these issues once and for all. It is a portable, event-driven runtime for building distributed applications across cloud and edge. Unlike other abstractions, Dapr is language-agnostic and can run on any platform, cloud vendor, or even on-prem. In this session, we'll introduce Dapr and demonstrate how we can use it to build a distributed, cloud-native, microservices application using various programming languages and frameworks, that can run virtually anywhere.

Our services team creates, builds, and maintains the as a service offering for base platform services within our organization. Several thousand applications use these custom services daily generating more than 700 million requests per minute. One of these services was our publish / subscriber offering, BQ with custom SDK and custom metrics based on Apache Pulsar. BQ is the core communication service within our organization, having more 200M RPM. All the core processes of the organization depend on this service for operation: the CDC of any of our RDBMS or NoSQL offering, all the eventing efforts of the organization, async communication between apps, notification systems, etc. The backend of the solution was Apache Pulsar running on EC2 on AWS and on top of that we built several components as wrappers of the actual backend, creating our own SDKs and abstractions and in many ways extending the features provided by Pulsar. We had a multi-cluster setup 100% on AWS, with custom Pulsar Docker images running on large ASG setups, along with our own wrapping and admin APIs and DBs. All of this in turn transformed the solution into a volatile solution.

Gilt, a global e-commerce company, implemented a sophisticated microservices architecture on AWS to handle millions of customers visiting their site at noon every day. The microservices architecture pattern enables independent service scaling, faster deployments, better fault isolation, and graceful degradation. In this session, Emerson Loureiro, Sr. Software Engineer at Gilt, will share Gilt's experiences and lessons learned during their evolution from a single monolithic Rails application in a traditional data center to more than 300 Scala/Java microservices deployed in the cloud. Derek Chiles, AWS Solutions Architect, will review best practices and recommended architectures for deploying microservices on AWS.

SAP is the most popular business application with more than two hundred forty thousand installations all over the world. But people spend enormous amounts of money to install it and then forget about security. However, in ERP systems, all business processes are performed, all critical information is stored like finances, HR, clients. Not to care about the security of this data is not very sensible. SAP NetWeaver Development Infrastructure is a complex item. It combines the characteristics and advantages of local development environments with a server-based development landscape. All this stuff centrally provides opportunities to support the software, implement new features, manage lifecycle of a product, etc. So, the main aim is to control deployment of components in the system landscape in a standardized manner. The key component in DI scheme is Software Deployment Manager (SDM). It is directly related to the production systems, that is why it is so critical. The presentation describes special features of SDM and provides several SDM attack scenarios along with the ways to prevent them.
