Storychasing Literacy (METC 2010)
Just as a stormchaser uses available technologies, knowledge and skills to pursue and document an impending thunderstorm, storychasers use their tools and abilities to document stories of local, regional, national or international interest. In our classrooms and after-school programs, as educators we can empower learners of all ages to become digital witnesses and responsible citizen journalists as storychasers. Whether on a school field trip, conducting research for a class project or school journalism assignment, or interviewing local residents to share about their lives and experiences, storychasers can and are utilizing a rich array of new media tools to create, communicate, and collaborate. Come learn how to join the storychaser's communication revolution, and catalyze the development of a diverse array of 21st century as well as traditional literacy skills with students in your local community who can become empowered storychasers! - Reaching Beyond the Cloud: The Theme of METC 2010. Today I want to challenge you first to live in the cloud. (This preso is in the cloud: On Google Docs as a Google Presentation) Secondly, however, I want to challenge you to reach beyond the cloud in your conception of literacy, and role as a communicator. I want to inspire and empower you to become a digital witness.
- This video interview was recorded on January 16, 2010, at the annual Trapper's Rendezvous held near Newton, Kansas. Over 4,500 Boy Scouts converged to learn about mountain men and the fur trade of the early 1800s, and to trade their own goods in mountain man style. This scout told the story of how he'd traded an alligator tooth necklace (provided by his Scoutmaster) and some pocket knives for a new laptop. He was planning to continue his trading, however, and aspired to swap for a Nintindo DS.
